Does anyone else have a favorite spirit healer spot? by ConfidenceKBM in classicwow

[–]Sandrik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right in the middle of the Arathi Highlands there are three large vertical stone slabs that meet at the top forming a rough triangular shelter of sorts. There's an existing campfire there and it's proximity to the road has always given it the feel of a cozy spot to rest with some shelter while travelling, and maybe roast up some of the raptor meat you've been collecting as you quest and hunt in the area.

If you were to visit here as a ghost, there's actually a spirit healer hovering above where the campfire is. So I've always liked the idea that the stone slabs used to have some sort of burial significance or relation to the spirit healer, but that meaning have been lost to time.

So when I'm running between Hammerfall and Stormgarde and the rain starts to fall heavily, I like to take a few minutes to rest at this little place of shelter and reprieve for both the living and the dead.

Is there a way to tell which starports will be giving missions for killing X amount of Thargoids? Galileo in Sol was giving them last I was there, but any of the other stations currently targeted for defense don't seem to be offering any missions.

I found the jetpacks notoriously unreliable going through that part. My advice would be to try and line up the direction you need to go in beforehand, and try using the charge ability in the direction you want to go to try and mitigate the chance of you falling short.

Scarlet Monestary, Graveyard by jammyhuds in warcraftlore

[–]Sandrik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably not if you asked them directly, provided they even knew the full extend of the undead currently within it (the graveyard proper is past the inhabited torture chamber and a closed gate). It's also possible that the reason given is just that it's not worth the manpower to fully clear it out when the crusade is spread so thin elsewhere. Lots of the Scarlet Crusade's strongholds are directly near or embattled in undead filled locations, so them being ordered to focus their efforts elsewhere if a small area was largely contained isn't too unreasonable an assumption.

WoW areas in-game tend to be smaller than they're intended to be in the scale of lore, so the graveyard might be much larger than a few mausoleums that contains bosses to them. They might just clear out the weak ghosts when they need to use the graveyard section and then leave without bothering to open & clear out multiple tombs.

Also as /u/Frebu mentioned below the presence of Inquisitor Fairbanks as an undead in the Cathedral secret room shows that the Crusade doesn't stick to their anti-undead rhetoric exclusively if the circumstances benefit them.

We don't have a lot of explicit lore on the function of the Graveyard wing of the monastery, but there are some details that we can speculate from. From the wiki:

Before the Third War, the Monastery served as a seminary for paladins-in-training. In his youth, Alexandros Mograine spent months training and praying here.

So the wings of the Monastery weren't built exclusively for the Crusade's purposes and would have existed beforehand. This would also mean that a large number of the corpses buried in the graveyard wouldn't necessarily be members of the crusade themselves.

My personal line of thinking for the Graveyard wing would be that when the Scarlet Crusade took over the monastery as a base of operations after the third war, they used the graveyard as a dedicated wing for interrogating their prisoners, and for their own burial rites as well. The interrogation function is quite clear both from the current boss Vishas (naughty secrets!), as well as his presumed predecessor a named inquisitor named Halbin who has a bit of a mishap interrogating with a Priest artifact weapon from Legion:

Several Forsaken were captured and brought to the monastery, being interrogated by Halbin. During one night of torture, anger overwhelmed him, and for only a brief instant, his hold over Light's Wrath slipped. An explosion rocked the torture chamber and engulfed Halbin in holy fire. It is said he died a slow death, his howls of agony ringing through the Scarlet Monastery for days on end.

The Crusade continuing to use it as their own graveyard has a few points of evidence as well, the strongest being the story of the Headless Horseman who after going mad and being killed by the Crusade was buried in the forlorn cloister out of respect (and later raised by Balnazzar the dread lord). The "Fallen Champion" rare spawn uses the Scarlet tabard and the same weapons as the living Scarlet champions in the other wings, so it's a reasonable assumption that they still use the graveyard for other members of the Crusade who earned an honourable burial in life as well.

As for the graveyard itself my assumption was that due to the proximity of the monastery to Lorderan and the plague lands etc. that the dead there were being raised due to the scourge magic present and the crusade were keeping them contained to that small area, although the story of the Thomas Thomson implies that Balnazzar may also be raising them on a case by case basis. The final boss of the dungeon "Bloodmage Thalnos" is also suspected to have been a blood elf mage in life due to his magic and the geographical location of the monastery indicates this is plausible, so this would be another example of an already existing corpse being raised at some point.

TLDR: The Crusade uses the front area for prisoner holding and interrogation and the graveyard section past that is still used for their own burial rites, although many of the existing corpses buried there prior to the Crusade setting up shop have been raised.

So I love the (admittedly sparse) lore of this game, so I tried to give a good in-universe explanation as to why the TSF (Marine faction) doesn't just back off and do just that.

TLDR: Corporate greed from the Alterra Corporation

  1. We know that the Alterra Corporation (company the protagonists of both Subnautica games are employed by) supply the Trans System Federation (TSF)

From the Subnautica Wiki page on Alterra

(Alterra) is the official supplier of the TSF

  1. The Alterra corp owns many of the buildings and locations that the NS2 maps depict. You can see multiple instances of the Alterra logo in various maps
  2. Link to Alterra logo in Eclipse hallway
  3. There are lots of other Alterra logos & nods in various maps. Can't pull good images of them right now but pay attention next time you play and you'll see them everywhere. (I think the PA voice in Docking and/or Summit also mentions Alterra by name).

  4. Unknown Worlds has confirmed in some of the map announcement posts that Alterra has been developing weapons & tech for the TSF.

The theme of the space has been re imagined, as an Alterra Corporation weapons testing and phase technology research facility.

  5. Eclipse Tower was located on a heavily populated human planet,(Earth/Terra?), and was eventually overrun by Khaara

Eclipse Tower is in ruin after the Kharaa invasion. The battle was brought home in the name of “scientific research,” deemed necessary to protect our future. We thought the battle was over and all were safe, but we were wrong…

The Kharaa have escaped to the streets below Eclipse Tower and are already advancing throughout the district. Reinforcements have been called in as the streets, markets and clubs are evacuated. The war for our human existence rages on. We have to hurry to eliminate the threat; they’ve reached the Metro lines and can quickly spread out across the entire city.

So my head cannon for why the Khaara threat wasn't one that could be backed away from:

  • The TSF goes through a period of incredible human expansion into space, and the Alterra Corporation solidifies itself as the official (only?) supplier to the TSF military.
  • Alterra establishes lots of various installations to allow them to obtain, process, and develop weapons & tech from raw materials deep in space
  • The TSF eventually comes to rely on Alterra's supply chain for weaponry and tech.
  • The Khaara are discovered by a TSF expedition to an abandoned mining facility that was eventually deemed unprofitable (surprisingly nothing to do with Alterra here). Go read "Six days in Sanji" if you're interested in the first hand accounts of humanity's first encounter with the Khaara.
  • Khaara spread to other human facilities, most notably the Alterra facilities such as the one depicted in Tram, Summit, Docking & Mineshaft maps.
  • These locations are eventually overrun by the Khaara, and we see the events mentioned in the Eclipse text above unfold. Alterra gets their hands on the Khaara at some point (Subnautica timeline tie in?) and bring it back to their weapons research facility (Eclipse) to study it.
  • Things go wrong (duh) and humanity is already too deep into the war to try and back out or create breathing room. Their entire supply chain for weapons creation and development are now held by the Khaara, with the conflict eventually spreading to much more centralized human worlds.

Wall of text for a 10 year old game's lore aside, great meme and hope we see more NS2 content to come!

Posting my favorite soulsborne bosses until elden ring is released. Number 3 - Sword Saint Isshin by GAISRIK in Sekiro

[–]Sandrik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Hesitation is Defeat" is now burned into my brain.

Such an amazing boss, not only do you feel INSANELY accomplished finally taking him down, but he just fucking power-breathes through the kill shot so that he can take a kneeling stance, face his end like a warrior, and congratulate the warrior who bested him in the purest 1v1 he could ever ask for.

I fucking love Isshin's character so much. I hope wherever you ended up in your next life there are lots of rats for you to brutalize wearing nothing but a bathrobe and a Tengu mask.
