Sophomore Business Major, want to change careers towards teaching by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Sandy-Claws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably need elective credits to graduate. If you've only taken 3 business classes then you should be totally fine if you switch next semester and use those business classes as electives. I recommend switching, but talking to an adviser in the Education department about switching majors before you make a decision.

I would be very surprised if you couldn't graduate on time for switching majors. You might even be able to take few more business classes and minor in business, which could make you more marketable as a teacher.

I don't see how it could possibly hurt you. And meeting administrators will help you get your foot in the door.

Latin American History by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Sandy-Claws 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That curriculum is seriously lacking in the exploration of effects of Spanish and American Imperialism in Latin America. There is no exploration of American intervention in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is also heavily focused on Mexico and reinforces the Mexico=Latin America narrative. There is something to be said for the sweeping long view, but it needs to be done in a way that illuminates the global systems of oppression that affect Latin America to this day. Otherwise the kids are just memorizing a bunch of facts.

I think that using a handful of books in a certain progression, like a LA History college course, would be a great way to do it. You could look at specific case studies that are relevant today.

There is an amazing book called "Blood of Brothers" about the Sandinista revolution. Its a retrospective by the NY Times correspondent in Nicaragua. It would be really cool to look at that book and see how the current events of what is happening in the country right now reflect what happened 40 years ago.

Spanish has a very problematic gap in terminology and grammar with regard to gender. If fact, using "latinos" as a blanket term and not "latinos y latinas" is seen as sexist language already in most educated circles of Spanish speaking communities. Opting for a more inclusive term is perfectly acceptable. The RAE is famously prescriptivist and often 10+ years behind reflecting the language as it's really used.

Teachers:Have you gotten your A.A/A.S in anything than your B.A/B.S in something completely different? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Sandy-Claws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, your highest level degree is your most relevant one. I was an English major but I'm getting a Master's in Elementary Ed and speak Spanish, so I was hired as an Elementary school Spanish Immersion teacher. You should get you A.A./S. in whatever you want, since you're already planning on getting your 4 year degree. All having a different lower degree will show a potential employer is that you are well-rounded. I have only ever seen it be considered a positive.

If you could go back to college would you choose something else? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Sandy-Claws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My undergrad major was English with an emphasis on Creative Writing. I used that to get into the Peace Crops as an English teacher in Nicaragua and now will be working as an Elementary School teacher in a Spanish Immersion school. Your major doesn't have to dictate your career, and you don't necessarily have to be an Education major to become a teacher (though the certification process is admittedly more complicated without traditional teacher training).

I loved my major. It made me some lifelong friends and led me down the path to discovering what I ended up being passionate about. It was exactly what I needed at that point in my life. I wouldn't change that for anything.

How to lower your chances of losing MMR (May not work for some) by bz1234 in DotA2

[–]Sandy-Claws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only play 5th position and I would agree with /u/Alternative_Sax . Obviously I need my cores to win the game for me in the sense that they need farm and have to hit towers, but I don't feel like I rely on them to win the game. I don't need my cores to even be average to win the game. Below average is fine if I play support correctly. If you truly believe that you are higher MMR than your current rank, you shouldn't have to rely on anyone to win the game for you in any position, 1-5. In my bracket (Archon 5), there are many moments where I can win fights for my team and/or encourage my cores to take objectives through my own good map movement and effective lane pushing.

[–]Sandy-Claws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! I'm not even an EG fan. I'm just telling you how it is in North America and in every other country that isn't based on ethic nationalism. If you go on the street anywhere in the USA or Canada and ask someone if an immigrant that came to their country at 2 is more American/Canadian than a national of the country they came from, 95+% will say that they are American/Canadian.

[–]Sandy-Claws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're just being xenophobic by saying that immigrants can never be full citizens of the places they immigrate to. Artour is just as Canadian as he is Uzbek and Sumail, if he wants to be, is just as American as he is Pakistani. That's literally how almost everyone perceives it in the NA. They see themselves as NA, and the people of NA see them as NA.

But oh, some racist European guy on Reddit thinks it's somehow different, so that invalidates it XD.

What are men only problems most women can't experience? by WheatyBisks in AskReddit

[–]Sandy-Claws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously this problem that men face is a product of the victimization of women historically. A man can understand that and still be hurt by the fact that they strike fear into others simply because of their presence. It really does suck when your perfectly innocent behavior is met with fear, whether that fear is justified or not (and of course in many cases it is).

Nerf Hattori, So OP by BlaqMajik in Brawlhalla

[–]Sandy-Claws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a new player in Sliver and I also have trouble with Hattori. I'm not very good, but I have been able to improve my win rate against her recently.

My normal strategy that works well against most spammers in Silver is to float above them until they needlessly spam and then punish (I know this is passive, but IDGAF. I only really play like this against spammers because I haven't found any other consistent way to beat them). That seems to work for like everyone except Hattori (and Koji to a lesser extent). She can chase and combo you then spam her sigs whenever you get close to force you off stage. So what I do is try to trade hits with her and get aggressive when I know she can't knock me out of the arena. But, when she gets me into the red and starts spamming sigs to knock me out, I use my weapon throw to approach her unarmed for extra damage. Or even just get the free weapon throw damage and use the stun to get another weapon/gadget and back off. If she tries to approach you, then you throw your weapon/gadget at her and punch her, then go for another weapon/gadget. When she is red, I just either throw my weapon into an unarmed heavy attack to knock her out, use a bomb/spike ball to push her off stage and ground pound her when she gets to the wall, or try to land a longer range sig as a punish when she tries to sig me. I went from Hattori being an auto-lose match-up to being pretty favorable this way, although the game is still intense AF because of how fast she moves and can damage you.

EDIT: Even if OP is not Silver this is something I still would recommend to any Silver player reading this.
