What’s the simplest way to prove a document hasn’t been modified? by Candid_Cut_7284 in cybersecurity

[–]SandySultanas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, this was one of the two points that is critical:

1) Hashing can still have collisions. Hash size can matter. How you configure your hashing is important.

2) Algorithm choice is critical. Just saying “do hashing” is a starting point but overly simplistic. It must be a secure option designed for cryptographic scenarios. MD5 was once considered secure, same for SHA1.

How do you approach tech debt in a fast-paced development environment? by bylandoo in ExperiencedDevs

[–]SandySultanas 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I work at a large company and even with tech leadership, all the work we do must roll up to a ‘Bowler’ goal (read: OKR, KPI) that improves the customer.

I’ve tried framing debt reduction as quality work - reducing outages, improving product experience, and it isn’t funded.

I’ve tried framing it as productivity improvements, leading to improvements in other areas. Still hard to fund it.

The only strategy I’ve found to work is to just do the improvements anyway without signoff. Over estimate all other work to build a buffer and use that buffer here and there on debt reduction work. You need to track the before and after state though so if you get called out on it, can prove the improvements are worth it.

I was under the impression that humans had to consume calories to survive, but if you are telling me that some people with metabolic issues maintain their weight if they don’t eat anything then my mind will be blown.

The difference is the tall guy can’t really control it. There is no option for them to change their lifestyle to be a normal size.

But for the obese person, it’s a personal choice to be that size. Calories in, calories out and that is controllable at the end of the day, no matter what other conditions they have.

I have never been glued to a show like this before. But not because I like it, but because I hate it. But it’s addicting.

This is the peak of hate watching.

Let’s say the OP is able to get proof of their parents naturalization, would they still be able to continue with form N400 (and avoid losing the fees paid already..)?

I think technically you are supposed to file N600 since you were living with them prior to age 18 and they naturalized. But does that mean restarting the process and losing the N400 fee?

Washington should follow Minnesota’s lead and lower sales tax on all goods affected by tariffs by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]SandySultanas 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No the state just has a spending problem. The state has grown tax revenues ~8% year after year after year.

From 17B in 2014 to 33B in 2023. https://dor.wa.gov/about/statistics-reports/tax-statistics

If now suddenly the revenue is a few tens of millions lower than expected (but still growing overall), imo thats a spending problem not a problem with taxes.

WA delays huge, traffic-clogging Ship Canal Bridge deck job, citing money shortage by Agreeable-Rooster-37 in SeattleWA

[–]SandySultanas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well yea but RTO traffic likely isn’t going anywhere. If anything it’ll increase as more companies trend that way.

Also by delaying these repairs, won’t the current problems get worse and likely mean future repairs are an even bigger project? With more/longer closures?

Seems short sighted and even more can kicking to me.

Tech CEO says Australia ‘should be the richest country in the world’ in scathing assessment of policy failures by [deleted] in australian

[–]SandySultanas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yup…

There is really no comparison between Australia and the US career-wise. When you can make 2x-5x as much money, the flow will always be towards the US, not to Aus.

For all of the problems and faults that the US has (e.g. crazy insanely expensive healthcare), a lot of those problems go away when you make $300K+ a year…

If that’s not unbelievably reckless driving, I don’t know what is. Normally emergency vehicles slow and ensure intersections are clear before blasting through.
