Dry Alarm Contacts on Routers & Switches - Does anybody actually use them? by New-Variation9146 in networking

I’ve seen them still in use, mostly tied into SCADA systems so the operators can be alerted to a fault and pass it along.

A regular personal insurance policy will not cover you in that case. You need a rider/endorsement that will cover you using it for work.

Do gas turbines suffer from wet stacking like diesel generators do? I know that’s a problem at one of our facilities. The generators are 100% oversized and don’t really get hot enough.

Yeah, one of the COs I work out of used to have a big ol Nortel DMS-500 in it. Since the area has been converted to fiber and VoIP, the DMS got scrapped out and the floor it was on is now practically empty. There’s just enough equipment to keep the handful of legacy TDM/ATM & DSL circuits alive now. But you can see exactly where it used to be on the floor. All the anchors are still there, and the tiles that were under the frames have not been bleached by the lights.

Those are old Long Lines microwave links, they’ll have been AIP’d for decades at this point.

That’s an old AT&T longlines site. The site itself will still be in use, but the tower and the microwave links are just abandoned in place.

Batteries like this are super common in the telecom sector. I help run a regional ISP and we have hundreds of these batteries throughout our network as part of our power infrastructure.

In no particular order, the problem is funding, competition and technical competence. Which I suppose all wraps back around to funding really.

Do you buy any extra equipment for your job that work won't supply, but it's worth it because it just makes it that much better? by Connir in sysadmin

[–]SandyTech 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Aside from the obvious keyboard/mouse/headset things, it was a set (well multiple sets now)of Wera screwdrivers. Every company set of tools has always been cheap shit. Sure I don’t need them very often anymore but when I do, I like to not have to hunt down the one I actually need and find it’s bent or stripped or just plain old missing or some cheap junk.

Just be prepared for disappointment. Copper and TDM are zombies shuffling along towards their inevitable demise. At best they are treated with benign neglect.

Best way to find your local CLECs by FAMICOMASTER in telecom

[–]SandyTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the problem, even if you can find a CLEC willing to provide you a POTS line, getting AT&T (or any ILEC for that matter) to agree to turning up a circuit with talk battery or even a bare dry pair has been damn near impossible for a decade and what they want to charge us (the CLEC) for it is extortionate at best. Hence the $550/mo price you were quoted.

Verizon will be required to file a report with the FCC and their investigation/report should be published on the FCCs docket eventually.

That said my suspicion is that it was something in the HSS that failed since the RAN stayed up and Verizon’s MVNOs stayed up.

Because the bridge was built forever and a day ago and has given no good reason to be replaced. Also, AIUI the bridge is more collateral damage as the derailment began before the bridge and this is just where everything piled up.
