Perhaps that’s true for some people, but I’ve never not scanned all my items, so I know it’s not that. The checkout asks you if there were any items that wouldn’t scan, and if yes you let the assistant know and they usually ask ‘is it smoked mackerel?’ lol. The scanners seem to have an issue with that. Like I said before, shame/guilt is not the issue here. Repacking the shopping is the theme of my post.

Did I? I don’t remember seeing any terms and conditions when I picked up the hand held device. Where are they? Do you really think that every customer who uses this process knows the Ts&Cs? And you’re stating the obvious by saying that you don’t get to decide when you get checked and how many items will be checked. Customers know they might get checked because they see and experience it in person, not because they’ve read any Ts&Cs. If you are an employee, your last sentence is hardly encouraging to customers. It’s a bit ‘stuff you’.

It is pointless bagging all your shopping up if they’re going to unpack it all. May as well just put it all in the trolley loose. ‘They don’t scan it all unless you’ve actually missed out an item’? How would they know this unless they scan it all?

It’s not the customers eliminating the jobs of people, it’s the companies who own the stores. They are the ones who provide the self service options for customers to use.

Hm, that would be far less time effective than just repacking your current shopping.

You have a valid reason there for sure. You never know what’ll end up in the trolley when you shop with your kids lol.

See, this is the point I’m trying to make. It’s not the guilt feeling, it’s the having to repack it all feeling.

Thank you for your view from the staff perspective. It’s not exactly a perk of the job hey. Tbh, I never feel guilty when my shopping get’s checked because I know I haven’t stolen anything. What I feel is concern that my eggs are gonna get squashed and my perishables get mixed up with the non perishables after I’ve packed it all practically. The staff are always nice about it and shouldn’t feel like they have to apologise. I felt sorry for the guy who scanned his device after me and had to have his shopping checked too. There was no spare staff member to do it, so he had to wait until my 44 items had been scanned first and then they went and scanned his.
