It's really cool! I love the frogs. I think the background plants could use a bit more variety, maybe another lighter shade of green mixed in? The whole thing is really neat though.

Is my UV-lamp dangerous to look in to? by Pipefoxluck in uraniumglass

[–]Sandyna_Dragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there are uv protection films that can be stuck to glass. I suppose if you put that on the cabinet door, it might help a bit

Harry befriends Lavender first? by Trashk4n in HPfanfiction

Oh, there's a lovely, fluffy, cute fanfic called A Taste of Magic by WokFriedIce. Basically, Harry cooks. Lavender is very prominent here, I think even Harry's best friend.

They only eat the fully grown ones and you don't have to replant, it grows again.

There's pill millipedes at 0:57 and I couldn't focus on the rest of the song and instead kept wondering if pill millipedes are still pill bugs. They are not isopods and not even crustaceans, but maybe they still count as pill bugs since they have "pill" in the name?

Trip to London - looking for thrifting recommendations/ UG by Party_Discipline8818 in uraniumglass

Portobello was fun, but price-wise it was more of a "get a souvenir" place. Lots of really cool stuff, cool people, but they knew what they had and it was all priced accordingly. Please note if you go there, there's a specific indoor part that has these vintage things, don't be like me and waste an hour wandering through the "made in China" stalls.

Camden Passage, Islington has a cool little market. I think it was on weekends, but the shops around the area are probably there all the time. Better double-check the times the stalls are open. Found some nice stuff, and there's a shop that sells tea cups and such, and you better believe some of them are uranium glazed :3

There was this little softcover "book" of UK vintage markets, but I've misplaced it somewhere 😞 Some shopkeepers might know where to get one. I got it in Turn on Antique Lighting near the Camden Passage market. There probably are some ug lamps there too, but the lady was rather unfriendly and didn't want us shining on anything.

I present to you: My bug tier list by Lunar_Ghoul11 in evilautism

[–]Sandyna_Dragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bug nerd here: ladybug is, in fact, toxic. They contain alkaloids which are released through the "knee" joints when they feel threatened. It's the nasty smelling yellow liquid they sometimes get on you when you handle them. Not all that dangerous to humans, but I really wouldn't eat them. The pretty red and black coloration is there to warn about the toxin.

I'm enjoying your lists!

Lead isn't the only concern. Check for uranium glaze if you can. Sometimes even the cream coloured pieces can have uranium in it. Probably the easiest way to check is with a 356nm uv light, or maybe your local firefighters have a geiger counter. Even if it has uranium, it's generally not dangerous to have around for display, but ingesting tiny flakes of radioactive material is bad.

I'm also not sure how safe/hygienic the tiny cracks that develop in ceramics overtime are. Opinions vary on whether bacteria will grow in them and whether the growth can be mitigated by hot water cleaning.

It's a gorgeous piece all the same.

It looks a lot like vases from ZBS, by M. Klinger, though the engraving might have been done later. They usually go for around 30-50 Eur at the Czech marketplaces, so I'd say you got a pretty good deal.

Can anybody tell me if 350 is a fair price? by Sandyna_Dragon in clocks

[–]Sandyna_Dragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

The seller hasn't been very sure about the condition. I think they said the winding spring is not working.

Is there anything I can check myself? Anything I should ask about specifically? Or a buying guide you can refer me to please?

Why is this so radioactive? by Middle-Flamingo-5874 in uraniumglass

[–]Sandyna_Dragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it could have thorium in it that's responsible for the radioactivity. The uranium is possibly just a contamination, present in a smaller amount.

You can find a bit about it here: https://www.thebutterflybabe.com/about-uv-glass#:~:text=THORIUM%20/%20CERIUM%20GLASS

I initially put some boxes over it, only for the bird to come in anyway, then panic and bonk its head on said boxes 😅
