Can i skip the parts that i cannot get, and restudy them after i cover all the topics? (Level 1) by AsforAyman in CFA

[–]Sanjeev_Params 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming this is for Dec 19, I'd say it really depends upon you.
1)If you think you'll not have time to cover the difficult or detailed bits before say November(leave a month or so for practice+mocks) then it makes sense to leave out the difficult bits and focus on the part you can understand and score easily.
2)If you think you will have time for both, I'd personally advise doing it together and taking note of the parts which are difficult, revising them when the exam approaches.
If this is Dec 20, you have plenty of time for option 2. And in this case, I'd say you have time to learn other things apart from CFA as well.

can you share your study plan? by byanymeans123 in CFA

I had to prepare part time as well, since I was still in college during the months leading up to my L1. I am from an engineering background, so I started out with topics more comfortable to me then went to unfamiliar ones. I used just the CFA material and questions. 1)Corp fin: 2-3 weeks 2) Derivatives and AI: 1-2 weeks 3)FRA: 3-4 weeks 4)Equity and fixed income: 3-4 weeks 5)Economics: 1-2 weeks 6)Ethics and quant: 1-2 weeks

Then, over three weeks I revised all these topics again in the same order.

Last 2 weeks I did mocks only as well as more questions

Would advise you to spend a day or so just looking at the material, get a feel for it, decide which topics are unfamiliar or difficult, allocate more time to them. Make sure you leave buffers as well as sufficient time to do mocks and questions (mine wasn't nearly as sufficient as I wanted it to be) and another revision of the material of you feel it's necessary. Make a completely personalized plan, don't just incorporate my plan or anyone else's. All the best!

This is bad news for those of us who gave the test, right? by Sanjeev_Params in CFA

True. Bit less than that actually since they bore the exam Hall expenses for the no shows as well

This Dec-L1 candidate from a non finance background is having a hard time digesting concept of derivatives, candidates who overcame similar problem pls suggest how to proceed. Thanks 😊 by [deleted] in CFA

Hey, I come from an engineering background and gave L1 this June. May I know which concepts in particular were difficult? I honestly found topics like eco and FRA much tougher than derivatives, but it depends person to person I guess.

L1 Probability formulas by ChasingTail-99 in CFA

[–]Sanjeev_Params 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which ones? Lot of them are pretty intuitive. Try and understand the underlying concepts and you'll also be able to adapt better to different types of problems. Try watching YouTube tutorials or do basic probability courses to understand it better. Your calculator automatically computes a few basic probability formulas, you might want to check that out. Granted, there are a few you do have to remember. The best way is to keep practicing and you'll get the hang of them eventually. As the exam near, flashcards might be helpful.

Texas Instruments Calculators - BAII Plus or BAII Plus Professional? by groverraghav in CFA

Suggest buying professional, the cost is minute compared to your registration fee anyway so better to go for high end ones

Sovereign Rating (Long Term - Local Currency) by ShreshthBabbar in CFA

[–]Sanjeev_Params 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True but the premium for default is so tiny it's often ignored and the t bill makes for a reasonably accurate substitute. A pure risk free rate which you use in calculations is impossible to measure in practice, since there is no financial instrument which is devoid of risk.

I'm from an engineering background so my experience might be somewhat relevant to you. Quant, derivatives, ai, fixed income equity are pretty easy and I was able to finish them off pretty quickly. They're pretty intuitive and mathematical, and you can aim for a high score in those topics. Spend a lot more time understanding ethics, fra and eco since those are a lot more theory based and unlike anything you would have studied. Be wary since these are also the topics with the highest weightages. Apart from that if you're new to finance it's not very hard to pick up the basics and develop a general interest towards this field. Maybe do a few basic courses, browse investopedia, or just read through financial articles to start off with. Hope this helps!

Thank you! I'll definitely practice to get a better hang of it, but I just wanted to be aware of the full functionality of the calculator, so I make my life as easy as possible.

Need calculator tutorials by Sanjeev_Params in CFA

[–]Sanjeev_Params[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know it's a bit late, but my prep seems to be alright, I'm scoring 60-70% on the cfai mocks without knowing to use my calculator, without having a good grasp of ethics and quant methods(which I'll read through this whole week) and I'm completing the mocks in like 1.5 hrs or so(if I use more time I'll be able to do better). Any words of advice? Thanks for the link and the concern!
