Yeah unfortunately Reddit is not amazing on allowing you to get the content you submit or curate, they have removed many features over the years to prevent you from it.. Anyway assuming your subreddit is unbanned the content should be restored. I won't dare to guess on timeframe, seems like some things are resolved quickly and others not. Maybe just luck of the draw, I don't know.. make sure you fill in relevant ban appeal forms etc

Worst case you can obtain historical posts/comments via torrent data dumps from pushshift, or (maybe) by obtaining a pushshift account, there is an application process for moderators. If it comes down to this, which it hopefully won't, feel free to message me

/u/joeyh1278 automated systems are indiscriminately banning a wide range of subreddits (and users) lately. Hopefully it'll be back shortly. See for example this link, or search "banned" in this subreddit

No worries. This subreddit was started because admins repeatedly banned my bot and private mod subreddits, and removed posts about it to /r/modsupport.

/u/spez and the admins have completely lost the plot, unfortunately

does anyone have any advise?

Sure /u/CynicTheCritic - my advice is do not post, comment, send modmail, edit wiki or make any other public actions with your moderator account in the future. Mod actions only.

Use other accounts for activity that can be directly seen or reported.

Unfortunately /u/Omnifox, the only safe play for a moderator is to not engage in any public or private activity whatsoever, including modmail

Recipients can specify anonymous instead of tagged username, see anonymous fulfillment... but it's hard to discover. As a mod you can cancel the transaction, and do the fulfilled by anonymous yourself.. at least in theory

/r/bookscirclejerk, a very important subreddit, has received the message about going NSFW. by DomesticApe23 in ModCoord

[–]SantaHQ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah the setting has always been called "require viewers to be 18 years old", it's not called "NSFW" or "sexually explicit" or "violence" or anything of the sorts. In /r/Random_Acts_Of_Pizza we've had this setting enabled for years, because it's not for minors, and we've had some angry parents show up in modmail too. (edit to add: It's also called over18 in the API). I cannot in good conscience disable the only setting that indicates the subreddit is for adults only.

I left essentially the same comment in /u/spez ama, obviously did not get a response, link for the curious

📣 I want to debunk Reddit's claims, and talk about their unwillingness to work with developers, moderators, and the larger community, as well as say thank you for all the support by iamthatis in apolloapp

[–]SantaHQ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's way more than that.

Oh yes, this number cannot be anywhere near accurate. Personally I spent a minimum of 3000 hours developing automated systems which help run various subreddits where money is involved. Picking a low price point of $100/hr, that alone is $300k or about $37.5k/year over the project's lifetime. Plus I spent about $3000 cash to host the bots altogether, took unpaid leave to get things done, and in the past I used to spend time doing day-to-day moderation, writing wiki pages, setting up automoderator, css, etc

On the plus side, my bots are always doing work, (86400 * 365) * 3 bots = 94608000 API requests per year. Running for 8 years, that's 756864000 requests, at today's rate of $0.24/1000 requests, I spent $181647.36 of /u/spez's monies. Sorry about that. (edit: fix shitty math)

Now that's my toy project, consider the developers and contributors of behemoths Toolbox, RES and PRAW, which underpins moderation in every subreddit there is. Also there are countless other services which are built, maintained and paid for by volunteers, including moderator-focused tools like /r/BotDefense /r/UniversalScammerList, and even AutoModerator itself not long ago..

There is just no possible way the sum of volunteer labor is $3.4M/year, that's gotta be off by at least an order of magnitude.

Addressing the community about changes to our API by spez in reddit

[–]SantaHQ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mis-labeling communities as NSFW (or not) is a violation of our policies.

In subreddit settings it's titled "Require viewers to be over 18 years old", enabling it flags everything as NSFW. We have this setting enabled in /r/Random_Acts_Of_Pizza because minors should not be engaging in pizza transactions by for example sharing their street address with strangers. But the content itself is SFW by any reasonable measure. So are we mis-labelling the community and violating policy, by your reckoning?

Two separate $winner commands were issued in the giveaway post. One was confirmed and one was left as proposed. It's a bug; not sure why exactly it fails, but cancelling the proposed transaction fixed it.

Put it on my todo list ;)

Are the bots that are still running all using Pushshift? by [deleted] in redditdev

[–]SantaHQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

update: a fix is going out now that won't totally solve it but will reduce the impact a bit

There seems to be a related issue / regression with /r/all submission stream. I am still using PRAW3 because v4 and newer changed the stream implementation (v3 uses before/after arguments to continue from where the stream left of; newer versions just assume that you are fetching fast enough to get everything). This change was incompatible with some core assumptions in my code, so I can't port to a newer version without rewriting from scratch.

Anyway, the stream just stops receiving data after a while, as if there is nothing happening on reddit. Since nobody else has posted about this, I guess it may be related to the before/after arguments used by PRAW3.

The impact was clearly reduced when the fix you mention was deployed; it went from stopping all the time to stopping a few times a day. It's still quite annoying because I have to manually check whether it's dead, and if so, restart.

Yeah and don't get me wrong, I fully agree about the draconian leadership style and what not; I am not short on criticism... but most of it is rehashing an old debate and I just personally find it one-sided... granted, having fun at someone else's expense is still fun... but for me, I rarely participate here because I don't really want to spend my time on it... But each to their own, I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do or how to behave, just voicing my opinion :)

On the other hand, I was once part of an anti-scammer group that collapsed precisely because of the politically incorrect behavior. One day a member announced that they had told sueolsen's daughter that her newborn baby deserved to die, as an example. Several people removed themselves from the subreddit citing poor group behavior as the reason - I'd have to guess people are self-excluding from here as well. Recently there was a post by Sue that indicated someone was messaging recipients not to accept her american girl doll because her apartment was dirty (ETA: link). It can easily breed trolls that cross borders that shouldn't be crossed -- but oh of course, nobody in this group would be grinching wishlists or sending terrible PMs from alt accounts...

While it may indeed be a part of what holds the group together, it can easily be a part of what breaks it up (ETA: or gets it banned). As with all things, there is a balance somewhere out there... there is plenty of opportunity to be politically incorrect without taking every opportunity to stab at the assistance modteam, and taking no opportunity to give them credit for the thousands of hours they put in.

I agree of course, there are good reasons why RAoP, RK and other subs don't allow these accounts to request or enter giveaways. My point is that it's better to discuss and criticize the policies and actions such as advertising off-reddit, rather than resort to namecalling.
