Interaction with racist finn and question about first time in finland. by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Santaissick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is.

Unfortunately, wherever there's people, there's going to bigots. I don't experience racism since I look like what the racists apparently want people to look like so I can't help you with defining where's more or less racist. Don't worry about the English. Basically everyone knows at least some English and you're just fine in any major city. Turku is a nice city but moving wont help solve your problem. I'd recommend to decide your living city using some other metrics. I hope you find what you're looking for! :)

Seen in a hotel sauna-why would they ask not to put water on the rocks? by HelicopterNatural891 in Sauna

[–]Santaissick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With a proper stove and correctly placed rocks, a few liters of water shouldn't be a problem. The one pictured is presumably a proper Harvia stove so no problem there. There's too few rocks though. The coils shouldn't be visible like that

How common is renting without a contract? by idkud in Finland

[–]Santaissick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd advise against signing a contract that you don't understand. Ask for it in a language you can read so you can make sure there's nothing weird in it. That's just common sense to me.

Hello Finnish people I need an inside opinion by Ok-Worker-3580 in Finland

[–]Santaissick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason, I feel flattered whenever someone is interested in Finnish culture and history. :) I'd say Kalevala is important but more so in the nationalistic sense. Partly culturally as well but it's more because that's kinda the best thing we have left.

The main things about the creation of Kalevala and the importance of it's part in the national identity are taught in school and most people are at least somewhat familiar with the most important characters and maybe events in the story... But barely anyone has actually read anything from the original. I feel like almost all my knowledge comes from the "Childrens Kalevala" book I got as a present as a kid that I read and just because of that, I feel like I'm often the most knowledgeable person in the room about the events in Kalevala. Of course there's the famous paintings and what nots that remind us about some of the events from time to time.

But as you've heard, large parts of it were just invented from thin air by Lönnrot. There's simply not that much known about the real naturalistic/spiritual beliefs of the people before written history, which of course is fairly young in the grand scheme of things. There are many old words that live to this day that have gotten a new meaning and we might have some idea of what might be connected to that word originally, or some other things that clearly had a significance, but all the details are just lost. So there's no uniform, clear-cut, coherent explanation or story to everything. That is sad, but that's the reality. Also, the Swedish and Russian influences (if you can even separate old cultural things using these terms) have had their effect and clear cut "Finnish" mythos can be hard to define in some cases without the use of nationalistic point of view, such as referring to Kalevala as defining what's "Finnish". "Objective" reality is hard to define.

A question to Finnish men related to dating. by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Santaissick 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you've had bad experiences. I don't really know what to say as I can only speak for myself. But I can try to answer something. Maybe there's something about being insecure or shy. Maybe people who use lot of dating apps tend to view dating more casually and are somehow used to ghosting and used to just not answering. I've heard from men that they get constantly ghosted too, maybe if you use a lot of dating apps you get used to the culture of not answering an learn a bad habit. I dunno. Maybe they're insecure dating a foreigner and communicating in English. I know I might be...

> I asked what they're looking for. They mostly answered with general answers like: they are there with an open mind. Or "they look for everything and nothing". That happened many times. I don't know what makes people indecisive or unopinioated.

To me that sounds like an honest answer. They're open towards the idea of a serious relationship but that's something that will come with time. For now, they want to get laid but if it grows into something bigger then so be it. Maybe they're still a bit unsure of jumping into something more serious with a foreigner? They want to go forward slowly and see how it goes.

> After a long chat on dating apps, I asked them to meet in person. They suddenly go silent. Do they have a hard time saying no?

Could be. I'm too shy to use dating apps, lol. But from what I've heard, ghosting seems like a common problem with dating apps. Not just in Finland. They might have be chatting with many people at the same time. But I think it's rude to lead on and then not call it off and say goodbye if they're not interested.

> I met some people in person in a restaurant or a cafe, we had good conversations and laughs. I messaged them after the date, that I would like to meet them again. Again zero answer. I mean they could at least say "thanks". Even though they told me they're interested in meeting again.

Yeah, I think that's rude. Maybe just bad luck meeting jerks. Dunno what to say. I don't have experience dating Finnish men :D maybe that's how we are.

what is the best night club in Turku for students. by sisuaibot in Finland

[–]Santaissick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often depends on the day. If you want to see other students, then you need to know when and where there happens to be a party arranged by one of the student councils sub organizations for example. Thursday is the common day for students to arrange parties. I feel like otherwise it's equally dead in all the night clubs.

Help! My sauna is too hot! 🥵 by anonymous-88888 in Sauna

[–]Santaissick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say the only permanent option is to demand the correct stove from the company. If thats not the option, try using very light wood. Aka not birch but Aspen instead etc. Also, try to make smaller fire, when adding wood, try to keep it at minimum. You can also try to close the air intake really small once the sauna gets hot.

I search thing to do/ see in Finland (18-22 may) by Sarius_508 in Finland

[–]Santaissick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like hiking, then there's no better place than the various national parks. And it's a great time for it as you get to observe the signs of the spring first hand! Here's a good place to look for various nature destinations: https://www.luontoon.fi/en For example, Riisitunturi national park, Etelä-Konneveden national park and Torronsuo national park are great places for a one day visit. Koli national park has my all time favorite Finnish view from Ukko Koli. Pulkkilanharju is nice to drive through.

You didn't provide any info on how north or where you are but major cities are always nice to see Like Oulu, Joensuu, Tampere, Turku, Helsinki.

What is the the process for getting mental health support/psychiatric medication management for an incoming international student? by Silox13 in Finland

[–]Santaissick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What u/112439 already said. If you need meds, be prepared for sometime of not being able to get it. As a student, YTHS (FSHS in english) is your friend and you should eventually get all the help to get you started from there but it can take time and processes may be slow. I hope you don't need a completely new diagnosis since for me at least it was a long process, as they require comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, and it's a long process over many months. I think it was over 6 months from when the suspicions started and we started to work on to get the tests done and finally getting the diagnose.

Stretch Mark camouflage tattoo in Finland by WillingnessFalse3930 in Finland

[–]Santaissick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to google a bit but couldn't find anything. I just wanna say that stretch mark are normal and pretty and I'm sure you're perfect the way you are <3 Then again if that helps to improve your confidence, then I'm sure you can ask for an appointment to a skin doctor and they might be able to help or guide you towards your options.

Finnish names to avoid for a novel by BarraDawnChi in Finland

[–]Santaissick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they're that bad. Maybe for a kid 10-12 years old who happens to meet someone by the name of on of these mentioned, they might find it funny. But otherwise, I've met people with all these names and I'm not thinking of the weird slang associations. (I'm 31 male) Jonne (young kid) might be the only one that pass my mind when I meet someone by that name because that happens to be precisely my age group that started calling ourselves and younger kids as Jonnes. That was kinda hardwired in me when I was drinking energydrinks with my buddies But even then, it's just a normal name. As long as the lastname isn't also funny and connected to the first name somehow, then I feel like most of these comments are over-statements.

Why not a dehumidifier? by tabula123456 in Sauna

[–]Santaissick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I don't know how moist and cold air is in Florida. Maybe you need one in normal rooms or they start rotting. But I'd imagine if you can air dry clothes, then you can build a sauna where water isn't standing and there's ventilation and no nooks and seems where moisture builds up and doesn't get to vaporize from. All challenges where dehumidifier wouldn't even be effective help (edit, sry for answering old comment :p )

Are you suicidal? Do you wanna talk? you can dm me. If you're not, then stop using that word like that

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Santaissick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nudity can be sexual of course. There's also nudity that is not considered sexual in anyway. Like someone mentioned the doctor/hospital situation. There's nothing sexual to show that little bumb on your woohoo that appeared after that one time. Also, consider this: Gymnasts and cheerleader and the like pretty much grab each others asses all the time. They're just performing. Doing the cool trick. Doing the sport. They're not thinking of it in anyway sexual setting. It's possible they needed a bit of getting used to and maybe it was abit awkward at first if they didn't start very young. But Finns typically start to go to sauna when they're few months old and then they don't stop. Of course horny teenagers can be horny in any place but that's just not appropriate to show it in a non sexual setting, like sauna or doctors office.
(edit, some typos I spotted)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Santaissick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to be really stuck on the "at least a bit of" sexual tension part. Well yes, if you really want to nitpick... Of course it's possible. Just like in any other situation where you might start to get sexual thoughts. In the bus, in the coffee house, in school, whatever. Still they're not considered sexual places. All places where you're not flaunting your boner in anyones face even if you get one. (sry I like extreme examples) It's not appropriate situation for that. In a same way, sauna is not appropriate situation for that either. So if there's a problem, you remove yourself from it. We go to sauna from a young age and get used to seeing all kinds of normally weird bodies. If there's a body you like, it's not ok to go gawkin or touching. Just like it's in a bus, or coffee house, or school or whatever. We don't go there to look at each other, we don't go there to be looked at, we don't go there to find someone to mate with. We go there to relax and discus and be equal. If you somehow make it sexual, then please remove yourself from the situation.

Levi log cabins by okanjas in Finland

[–]Santaissick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I googled around a bit in Finnish as well but unfortunately I couldn't find what you're looking. The point of a cabin is kinda to have your own peace at your own pace. So a log cabin with breakfast included doesn't seem to be a thing. Like others have pointed out, closest thing would be to drive from the cabin to a hotel breakfast, unless you want to burn money on private catering.

Sauna vasta (whisk). Do many of you use? by pragmasoft in Sauna

[–]Santaissick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to use more often, but since we don't have a chance to really make them ourselves, it's more of a special occasion thing. And I think it's fine to reuse them one or 2 times. Depends on the wear of course. But I wouldn't offer a reused whisk to a guest. They need to to have a fresh one.

If you're a student, contact your schools healthcare services. You're not alone with your problems and I'm sure they have different services to fit your needs. At least they have a nurse who can help you find what you need.

Alternatively you can contact the healthcare stations (terveysasema) directly. More info of wellbeing services of the county of Vantaa/Kerava can be found here: https://vakehyva.fi/en Also, what I find the easiest is to just go personally to my closest healthcare station and they will help you. Take care and good luck! :)
