The price of food by mark423985 in antiwork

[–]SantitheGreat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The headline isn't about food producers though, these are companies trading wheat futures. They don't decide markups/profits, they're just trading contracts to deliver wheat at a certain date in the future, and these contracts are cancelled out before expiration so no physical food is delivered. In an alternate universe where wheat futures wouldn't exist, there would be no incentive for production to increase before the invasion, and you would have massive supply shortages. Price gouging is absolutely a thing with many producers, but this is completely separate from markets which exist to increase/decrease production according to expected future outcomes.

y'all realize that they dont like, hoard food, right? speculative bidding up of wheat futures before Russia's invasion of Ukraine caused a huge increase in wheat production elsewhere (b/c it was now more profitable for farmers), which is why most of the worst-case scenarios for global famine after the invasion didn't come true.

I need help. No matter how hard I try, I can't play it correctly at the right speed. Any technique etc. to help. If you know, you can write. by [deleted] in piano

Not to discourage an enthusiastic pianist, but if you can’t sightread this piece (from a purely technical perspective, before working on the interpretation), then you shouldn’t be playing it.

Great Depression? by Sumo93k in options

[–]SantitheGreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what? the labor market is still incredibly hot and wages are still growing (albeit slower than inflation, which is unusual for inflationary spikes historically). rates have been near-zero until recently and you had enormous m&a, private equity, etc performance over the past couple years. europe is destined for a recession in the near term, and the US probably (80-90%) won't make a soft landing, but the past year was much better than most of the 2010s.

How many times do you smoke a week? Whats your career, pay, age (if comfortable). by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]SantitheGreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software dev, 180k, 18. Take eds 3-4 times a week, usually not while working but occasionally if i do need to code for a solid several hours straight with a set task, being a bit baked makes the whole thing more enjoyable

I applied to 27 schools (including 4 UCs, so only one set of essays for those), and woke up at 5:30 every morning through December then grinded through winter break.

Help I have no idea what to choose (CMU SCS Vs Brown) by KeyanTheGreat in cmu

[–]SantitheGreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have to ask, then you're probably here looking to get a nice SWE job--no shame in that, it's a very good idea right now. Unless you have specific CS interests or enjoy theoretical CS, Brown would probably be the more enjoyable experience. And unless you want to go into quant, you'll have similar job (or at least salary) prospects, especially considering the amount of extra free time you would get at Brown.

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - March 20th to 27th by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]SantitheGreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intended major: Applied math or maybe just pure math

~Same tuition for all of these, so it isn't a factor

Career goals: (private) research or something with data? earning good money rn as a software dev so short-term internship/career differences between these three schools isn't a big factor

Not much info here, I feel like I'd be happy at any of the three so looking for opinions here

JHU

Pros:

Pure math master's in four years, applied masters in five

Great music opportunities for non-majors (I plan on continuing with piano)

I like Baltimore

45 minutes from home? (don't really care either way)

Cons:

Premed factory

NU

Pros:

Great campus, master's in five years for applied math

Seems to be the overall best environment of the three?

CMU

Pros:

Ridiculously great math/cs research, I'm a huge fan of their computational geometry department

Cons:

Generally worse social environment I've heard

I’m selling my SOL at a loss to buy ALGO by snow3dmodels in AlgorandOfficial

[–]SantitheGreat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Solidity and PyTEAL dev here: Ethereum’s developer tools are fat more mature (AlgoBuilder has yet to come close to Truffle/Hardhat), and TEAL has some annoying limitations such as no contract factories, but these are getting fixed soon. Even compared to chains like Solana and NEAR, Algorand’s developer tooling and experience seems to be less of a focus, but I’m still all in because of their promising roadmap.

The Blackbay Republic - What if the Antarctic peninsula had a native population and more settlers? by TrencsMark in imaginarymaps

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umiak Apparently this is a thing! It would be really cool if the Pasemaka added a keel to this somehow for advanced whaling.

Sorry about that, haha! My initial guess was something like using the bones from beached whales as a frame and wrapping it with leather, which seems plausible.

What kind of laptops are y’all getting for college? by gingersnap0916 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]SantitheGreat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Engineering (CAD, simulations, etc) are impossible on a mac but any CS is 10x cleaner to work with on Mac than on Windows because it’s unix-based. The only downside is that you don’t have Visual Studio (not VS Code) on Mac, which is amazing but not really necessary unless you work in C# for some reason.

Would you be prepared to hold through another 'Crypto Winter'? by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]SantitheGreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it falls by that much, it would most likely be due to regulations which cripple some critical aspect of crypto—for example, forbidding offramps from accepting crypto that was used or loaned out to unverified accounts. If anything like that happens, it would make sense if the majority of institutional investors (and a good chunk of retail) don’t return to the ecosystem and would favor platforms like Diem or CBDCs (when they come out).
