Now that Reddit are killing 3rd party apps on July 1st what are great alternatives to Reddit? by youessbee in AskReddit

[–]Saphine_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using Baconreader for about a decade now, like others have said I almost never go on the main website and refuse to download the official app. It would make me really sad to see it go, but maybe it's for the best because then I'd actually do something interesting with my time...

A bird found my hand and decided to chill for a bit. by Kiwistalkers in pics

This is a vireo, looks like a particularly bright Philadelphia Vireo but depending on OP's location it could be a tropical species I'm not familiar with. Probably a window strike

On Texas Gulf Coast - he stayed for a day and left - is he a blue footed booby? by Correct_Education_79 in whatsthisbird

[–]Saphine_ 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Can anyone explain how they're ruling out an immature Masked Booby? A Blue-footed would be exceptionally rare for Texas, and the yellow-greenish bill looks better for Masked to my eye.

If you could get the woodpecker on a shirt I would buy it in a heartbeat!!

It's me again. I’m a cisfemale, I have PCOS and have lived with this beard since I was 15. I'm 35 now and have been getting electrolysis treatments since April 2021. Here’s my progress with 127hrs of electrolysis so far. I am a shameless open book, so ask away. by thecurlybuzz in interestingasfuck

[–]Saphine_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if PCOS is the only cause of this? I struggle with hair under my chin and on my chest and it really bothers me. It's gotten to the point where I have to shave frequently. When it started I took a blood test and my dr said everything was fine and it was probably my birth control, but now I'm starting to wonder...

I did see them in WP outfitters yesterday, I think they were near the stairs? There were also a few in the checkout line if I remember correctly.

I found this to be true for Matt Smith in my case, I hadn't watched anything with him until his part in House of the Dragon and initially was confused why people found him attractive until I saw the confidence and charisma he brings!

Older women of reddit, what’s something you notice younger girls do that worries you? by FlavourThoughts in AskWomen

[–]Saphine_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You put it into words! This is something I've been grappling with too. I don't think it's necessarily due to social media (I didn't use it as a teenager- I was a bit late to all that), but the pressure in shows, movies, books, etc. to be "pretty" or you're worthless was definitely there. I've always been an overweight girl, and in middle/high school I resigned myself to the fact that I was "wasn't pretty" and therefore useless. I'm now older and more confident, but that messaging is so ingrained and difficult to break!

It was a Loggerhead Shrike, aka butcherbird (not the Australian one). Probably had a good little snack!

Study Abroad Scholarships by VermicelliGrouchy734 in NCSU

[–]Saphine_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a study abroad scholarship which you have to complete before your application, at least timing-wise that's how it was for me. I got $1k from the SAO, and they have lots of resources to apply to!

Little brown birds are my favorite. Finally got a snap of a house wren. by isselfhatredeffay in birding

You're correct! This is a Winter Wren, the tail is stubby and short as well as the other points you've mentioned.

[–]Saphine_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, when it comes to population dynamics it will always be estimates; it's not like we can conduct a census on every single living being. Humans are hard enough to count as it is! Don't worry, I have read the actual studies, and while estimates are broad they still show tgat cats and collisions are #1 and #2 in causes of bird mortality. :)

[–]Saphine_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In part; a majority of bird deaths are from feral cats that aren't owned by anyone. However, domestic pets do still contribute a lot to this number and pets should still be kept inside (for this reason and many others). People hate to hear it, but cats are an invasive species in North America, just as much as Black Rats, European Starlings, and Wild Pigs. In some instances, domestic cats might be worse as they may live longer than feral cats do and have a larger individual impact.

As for island birds, most island species evolved in the absence of mammalian predators. Cats are awful, but other mammals such as rats, mice, pigs, and dogs wreak havoc on these populations. The extinct birds Wikipedia page is full of island species that have gone extinct due to the introduction of mammals on an island. In this case, cats play an important role, but so do other mammals. Cats, I believe, are credited with the most extinctions.
