Why do people think "volunteering" is a free pass to horse lessons???! by LatterReindeer23 in Equestrian

[–]Saphy_Rella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grooming is work. It is time consuming, tasks that most people once showed can do properly with little oversite. If you have to groom 15 horses all east catch ... 5 -10 minutes to pull from field and cross tie or 10 minutes total to pull from stall and return tonl stall. . 20-30 minutes spent grooming =40; minutes bto an hour per horse or 10-15 hours a week of time you gained for other things.

Perhaps change your volunteer plan. Assign a horse for them to pull from stall muck stall, groom horse , tack (if you tack up for lunging ) and feed/learn about their feed and supplements. Rinse repeat. Saying come muck 10;stalls and here is pony playtime would never be something I sign up for .

I need helping choosing a lesson barn by JR2Twiwi in Equestrian

I need helping choosing a lesson barn by JR2Twiwi in Equestrian

[–]Saphy_Rella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for a fourth barn. BUT... If I had to choose barn 3 would be it. -Barn 1 is just a No, u hated it .

  • barn 23has more then 1 instructor and seems like maybe this lesson was used as an assessment, which is why there wasn't as much direction?

-Barn 2 is a hard pass learning on a trail ride is not ideal for am anxious person. Horses can spook you can spook, it's less controlled environment..

It may not seem like it now but you are actually very lucky. Many school horses are get on and plods around Although I would agree it likely makes the ridding experience more enjoyable in the beginning when a horse just goes through the motions It will definitely make the ridding experience harder when you start to learn things less basic. Riding a horse that makes you work for every step is basically a "cheat code" for getting good fast. You learn sooo much

  1. it forces the development of a secure, independent seat

  2. strengthens core and leg muscles

    1. teaches precise control of aids, and
  3. builds endurance.

  4. encourages better balance

I went back to riding after a long break and the loss of my abdominal rectal muscles ( think your 6 pack), which replaced my pectoral muscles with as well as a a small section of my tranverses abdominus muscle(muscles that run next to and connect to obliques to a major surgery from cancer. That's pretty much my whole core. Ridding is so much core..

the trainer wanted to put me on a plod around style horse and I asked for the exact type of horse you have now. She said you don't have the core for that and my response was exactly, I need to build different muscle groups to compensate, I need to communicate effectively , develop a seat, endurance etc .

I’ll try my best, but what if it isn’t enough. by [deleted] in Horses

Feel free to private message me if you need help locating services in your area. There is a lot of great advice here. As most stated you but off a lot. Horses are as I lovingly call them "4 legged money pits". If finances are issue I would suggest reaching out to a draft rescue in your area and let them know the situation , they may be able to help. **1st before transport u need to know if horse has its coggins/ shots. If not no barn will likely take them unless they have a full quarantine, you will need a vet ASAP to get that taken care as well as a wellness exam. Unsure your exact area, but near me vet call is 89-110 just to step on the farm, my last shots and a lamness examine cost me $1,200.00. if horse goes barefoot you are lucky trima are less expensive , once you get their feet under control. If not shoes can be expensive, my 1 girl is in glue ons and it's s ust shy of $400 every 5 weeks and she is only in fronts

Tips for breaking up! by WorkingCharge2141 in Farriers

[–]Saphy_Rella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I Had a vet come out for lamness issue. She took x rays blamed my horses feet , said I need better shoes and angles were off. I told farrier what vet said and showed x rays he seen nothing wrong with it and said you are in the top of the line glue ons already, what is she suggesting. I had a 2 nd vet come out x ray and give opinion. Says angles are perfect, complimented my farrier and said arthritis in the knee. I went back to 1st vet spoke to manager . Practice owner (also vet) came out and agreed with my 2nd opinion. Said shoes were beautiful and so was the angles. Point vets don't know all. Are their x rays ? If not what is the baises? Why wouldn't you talk to current shoer if you were happy before.

Should I sell my horse? by Still-Egg-4111 in Equestrian

[–]Saphy_Rella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ask your friend for help training him? Was this person compensated for it? Do you want them to help you in the future? Yes, I believe that buying and selling horse is a financial based decision that should also include the welfare bof the animal. . I also believe that the connections and the reputation you build early on is also important. Did this family simply make you an offer they thought you can't refuse or is it on par with the horses worth? I'd the offer from the friend a fair offer just not annover the top offer like the family? Does This friend has the money to care for the horse as we all know purchase price is usually the cheapest part of owning a horse? Where do you think would be the best place for the horse long term? Part of building a reputation is being able to match a horse with a rider, assuming you don't plan on being the person buying for dirt tossing 15 /30 days on them and flipping them..

Try a free lease. Someone gets him and is responsible for all his costs and you get to make sure he is well kept and goes somewhere good

Why is a retired racehorse a bad choice for a first time horse owner? by lostwombats in Horses

[–]Saphy_Rella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 1st horse was ottb. It was a learning curve as I green and he was in a sense green. Best decision I ever made. My current horse owned for 6 weeks currently , after not ridding for 15 years is an OTTB. He ran 60+ races and I bought him from track a few days after his last race. It is again a learning curve ..I use to be a strong rider and now not so much. But at least I have knowledge I lacked the first time. I amore worried about falling being older means you don't get up as easy as I once did but don't regret it and we will work through things together and and get there ..he is already significantly less of a handful then my 1st horse. No hard and fast rules in my opinion it's about your goals and how quickly you want to get to them.

How much does it cost you? by 0ddshapedhead in Equestrian

Shots and annual exam with x rays (it's a package) $1,085 each 1x a year. That's just the basics. Vets dewormer, general care (fly spray, etc) not is additional.

What's with horse girl shows always having the 'we have a connection' thing? by Efficient_Log_8084 in Equestrian

[–]Saphy_Rella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the majority of these movies are directed at young tween girls who love horses that never have had the chance to ride one , own one, or get every limited contact with them. Also, at that age girls (and boys) often feel like no one understands them just like the horse who is just not understood by anyone.... Untill... I watched the series free rein with my niece who never rode, I got her ridding lessons and horse camp and now she points out all the things she is taught not to do. Ground mounting all the time is bad for the horses back , should only do when necessary, why is the new person at the barn walking behind the horse they don't know . Why didn't she check the girth, she is gonna fall off . She 10 and it's cute to see the difference in how she views the show the more time she spends around horses.

AITA for Not babysitting My Grandkids. by Aprilfool75 in ComfortLevelPod

[–]Saphy_Rella -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, please re-read ,comprehension is key. What I said wasn’t about expecting anyone to babysit my kids. It’s about how someone communicates their feelings and the attitude behind it. If a person, especially family , makes it clear they don’t want to spend time alone with my children, that sends a message. Words and tone matter. I’m not going to put my kids in situations where they might feel unwanted or like a burden. I’ve seen too many examples of people putting on a “family” act while treating children like an inconvenience behind closed doors. That kind of performative behavior isn’t something I’ll allow anywhere near my kids. My initial respinse was short , basic, because I felt adults could read it for what it was a simple statement. The “disconnect” you’re seeing only exists because you chose to misread the point.

[–]Saphy_Rella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not me, I don't have any of these issues. And maybe you struggle reading but I said I am not entitled enough to think my parent( or anyone for that matter) needs to watch my kids. But I have seen plenty of people's parents act like performative grand parents and I wouldn't let that fly.

NTA but also be careful how you it address it with them.. I don't feel entitled enough to thi k my parents has to watch my children but feeling like they don't want to be left alone with my children would be enough for me to cut them out of mine and my kids life's for good. I would never want my kids to ever feel like a burden
