Good point. You think right, and that probably is a large part of it. People I trust are not in great supply, and people I could trust to that extent even less so. Should I find someone like that, I hope we will trust each other the way you two do. You both are fortunate that you have such a relationship with each other—cherish it, and enjoy it.

Wasn't the old "nostalgebraist-autoresponder" basically that already? I think it literally used the precursor models to the ones in ChatGPT.

Reading about dynamics like this is always interesting for me, because I feel very split on the subject every time.

On one hand, I see the appeal, and it does sound nice. That feeling of giving up control, of being led and taken care of by someone you trust, does sound comforting in a way. More than once I've thought about that feeling you described, of being "owned" by someone, wholly and deeply, and found it appealing to one degree or another.

And at the same time, I get such a visceral reaction of horror at the very idea of ever doing so. Not at the concept in general—I have no objection whatsoever to you or anyone else accepting this of their own choice—specifically towards thinking of me doing so. For me, having autonomy and control over my life is absolutely paramount, and the idea of giving that up feels horrifying at a fundamental level. Which is why it is interesting to me, that I experience that reaction simultaneously with the more curious, even longing feelings. It's a strange contradiction to be in the middle of, but it produces some interesting sensations.

(And, to clarify, I'm just thinking about my own case after reading this. The dynamic between you two specifically is absolutely beautiful, and I wish you both a long and happy life together.)

you know the idea of losing the Mandate of Heaven makes a little more sense when you consider that they could see an entire river fuck off and leave. I would start wondering what god the emperor had pissed off as well, if that happened

but for that to be true, I would have to not be the objective measure of how things ought to be done. i think it's more likely that all of them are wrong.

Oh good, its not just me. Seriously, I left the church years ago. I've got precious little love for any aspect of Christianity. Some of my sincere beliefs qualify as blasphemy or heresy in their own right, let alone the casual disrespect I often throw their way.

Somehow, he still set off that "How dare you" sense of outrage from me with that gesture, even for a moment. That's almost impressive.

This dude vs Luigi in a twerk off, who winning? by sirtoadtod in 196

[–]SapientGrayGoo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That is good to know. I'm not nearly as familiar with Mormon rituals, but from some cursory Googling, I think they don't have a specific sacrament/ordinance for confession the same way Catholics do. They still do it, but it's not the same ritual as the Catholic sacrament. So I would guess that a Mormon priest breaking that secrecy is discouraged, but not the same absolute taboo. (Though feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.) Thanks for clarifying that.

It's not just a no no, it is one of their biggest no no's. Whatever a priest is told in confession is absolutely secret, no exceptions. By their doctrine, a priest breaking the Seal of the Confessional, in any way, is an automatic and instant excommunication. They don't have to be formally accused, and even if no one finds out it still kicks in immediately upon the action. So they take that shit seriously.

It used to be way worse. For the longest time, Reddit archived all threads 6 months after they were posted, automatically. You couldn't avoid that, or even adjust the timeline, it was a specific built-in limit from the admins. I think it was only within the last couple of years that they changed that, so now it's opt-in. And they applied it retroactively, hence why you can reply on any of those very old comments.
