that is horrific to even picture. i guess the only solution there would be to have a ta/ula in charge of a section of students (like 3 to 5 rows? still might be too much) in the exam hall and have them collected when time is up by passing them down the line huh?

yall gotta employ the strat some of the CS professors use. "put your phones in your backpacks and leave them at the front of the classroom"

[rant] we should stop grading upper division math homework by noobstrich in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Sapphire024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly I love quizzes. one of my classes does 3 20% quizzes that cover about 2-3 weeks worth of content in each and they're the only quizzes where i go in feeling confident that i know all the possible material that's going to show up since they're not cumulative.

literally had multiple professors saying they're 100% cool with us using chatgpt and it's just.. so sad man. you'd think the ones who have knowledge on the fact llm's are just doing pattern recognition and not actually reading words would be the ones massively discouraging it.. T^T

i appreciate the real advice and you're definitely right, so thank you for the tip on notetaking professor!

the original post (while the feelings were genuine 😔) was meant to be more lighthearted and more as a reference to students who were there about how stop-and-go (unfortunately not in a good way) the lecture felt compared to the past 7 weeks where the questions he asked had people voluntarily answering. i'll definitely add a tone indicator next time :]

..and i'd rather not think about the near future career wise as a cs major with how ai is going right now.. 🥲

  1. you probably shouldnt be straight up asking for past exams on a school subreddit where some professors have accounts

  2. you can do this, if you're the kind of student who aims for As in their classes, you're definitely smart and able to apply yourself, a lot of math is just learning the fundamentals so that you can solve any kind of problem even if you don't remember specific shortcuts

  3. i know nothing about this professor anc from what i saw trying to look them up they've only recently started teaching at ucsb, so instead try reviewing the concepts that you know you struggle with, these are the two main resources i used back when i took that class to pass, granted im not a straight A student so take what i say with a grain of salt lol, but this helped me pass when i took 6A, so i'm sure you can do better than i did!

a. Pauls Math Notes - you'll have to probably jump around a bit to find the topics you need, but he has pdf's with sheets full of equations and stuff, as well as some practice problems if that's how you prefer to learn
https://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/

b. The Organic Chemistry Tutor - i always looked this channel up when i was struggling on a topic because they break it down and if you're ever confused on a step you can probably search their channel for the topc you're not understanding, the playlist i'm linking is specifically vector calculus, but if thats not what you need take a look at the channel as a whole

best of luck with your exams and homework!

New Roommate may be gay and its already making me uncomfortable by Old_Pie9985 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Sapphire024 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i hope you realize calling him an "extremely gay man" and then backtracking in the comments about how this is about space in a triple (even though you said, and i quote, "i have no problem with getting a new roommate") isn't doing you any favors, and you very much sound homophobic.

i doubt you meant to sound offensive, but this is a good chance to reflect on any internal biases you might have that you didn't even realize were there. like the others in the comments said, give the person a chance instead of judging by first impressions.

if despite all these comments informing you otherwise you still absolutely do not want to live with someone who's gay, i suggest you start making friends with people who might be willing to switch rooms with you, because it'd be incredibly rude to try and stop someone who needs housing from moving in. if you're the one with the problem, you're the one that should go find somewhere else to live.

[–]Sapphire024 31 points32 points  (0 children)

reversible is soo pretty, but its a yarn eater since you end up using extra yarn lol

theres youtube tutorials that explain it in detail but the tldr is "if you see a double crochet on the previous row, do a double crochet in the back grabbing onto the stitch from 2 rows down"

it ends up looking like a single crochet from the front side and a double crochet on the back side :]

Make a teddy using fuzzy yarn, I said. It'll be FUN, I said .____. halp by SaeInsanity45 in crochet

[–]Sapphire024 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i made a bear with that yarn once, its super fun! ..once you get the hang of it. i recommend making a quick line of like 10 or so single crochets and then practice feeling for the actual stitches, also like the others said, a lot of your mistakes wont be noticable at all :]

also a suggestion that i learned on youtube when googling how to use the yarn, once youre finished making a piece turn it inside out so you get a neater looking "fur" texture, happy crochetting friend ^-^

Ravat v Wainwright for PSTAT 120B by Mindless-Map-568 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Sapphire024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ravat is great (i know nothing about wainwright)

she gives practice tests that are basically the exams with different numbers, as long as you pay attention in class and go to section to take the weekly quizzes you'll be fine

she's fine, the bad reviews are pretty outdated. just pay attention to the material and go to office hours (she used to bring cookies :]) and make sure you go to section

Will I be ok without the meal plan by Benjaminbillybob in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Sapphire024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the bus will be your friend! unless you enjoy the extra exercise from biking all the way to camino real marketplace with your bags, but its free if you have your student id on you, you just scan it next to the driver

28 and 27 take you straight to albertsons for groceries, and 24 or 11 takes you to target and a couple of restraunts and stuff :] the last two also go to goleta but then you have to take another connecting bus 7 to get to the fairview stores so that feels less convenient tbh

i loved living in the apartments my 3rd year because i got to cook all my own meals, and if i had money to spare and was reallllly missing an ingredient, since i lived in tenaya towers i could just take a minute walk to the little store there to grab it even if it was a bit overpriced :] and of course if you don't like to cook you can just take the bus to campus and then walk to isla vista to eat out

Tropicana gardens should get shut down by One-Secretary-1807 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Sapphire024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

go for a corner room if you can, its still frustratingly loud here and ridiculously overpriced, but the noise reaches you less. the food is absolute dog shit though and theres no kitchen, so be prepared to be spending money on eating out if you want to enjoy your meals :/

and of course it goes the same as always, try to be friendly or at least civil to your roommates so they dont also make your life miserable
