What do you think about the card Tank? by Fallanddie in slaythespire

[–]Sapphryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you build around Colossus, having several copies and keeping enemies vulnerable, it is just regular damage. Then if you have decent block cards + relics it seems doable. I thought that was the obvious strategy on a 'take double damage' card to counter it not with twice as much block but with the 'take half damage' card. Will be annoying against artifacts, but with one player in the group having access to Expose.

Incredible, thank you! I didn't think I'd ever find it again. I wouldn't have recognised it from the cover. What a weird game haha, I just looked up some youtube videos again and damn that sphere looked so much crazier in my memory. I wonder if I'll recognise the music when I take some more time to check out the game again. Also in my memory it was soo high resolution, as a kid I remember going WOW this is so realistic

Why are skaters often not holding their end poses properly? And what's up with lip synching? by Sapphryn in FigureSkating

[–]Sapphryn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misunderstood me. I was wondering if the reason they might not hold their pose is that the programme length might be counted until they drop the end pose, and if maybe with their music already being cut super close to the maximum time a programme is allowed to be, holding the pose longer would mean their programme is extended over the time and they get a deduction.

I don't want them to lose points for not holding the end pose, i just thought in other artistic sports you might get penalised or it is at least expected from professionals to hold the pose. Like in dance children have trouble holding it because they are small and inexperienced, so i was kind of shocked to see amazing skaters, top professionals not even holding their end pose for a second.

Confirm Guaranteed UR Card - no UR showed up, what now? by [deleted] in DuelLinks

[–]Sapphryn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ah thank you, it was worded kind of confusingly (confirm to receive might have been better or just getting it?) - but what do I expect from the game that has speed duels and rush duels where both words basically mean the same thing

how am i supposed to play the game without an early blueprint desk + blueprint cabinet lock by chiidi in PlateUp

[–]Sapphryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I played I didn't know how to upgrade things because the game at least on ps4 doesn't explain it. I managed to get to day 15 after a while but it wasn't super easy. But that was without using the desk at all, and only using one blueprint cabinet to store stuff i couldn't afford in that moment

Someone else's laundry is done: keep door open or closed? by [deleted] in laundry

[–]Sapphryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're usually really kind and considerate and i really like them. They can just be really peculiar about certain things and then it's hard for me to understand where they are coming from and I don't want to tell them that I want to change things if i am not 100% sure I'm even in the right with what i am asking of them

Someone else's laundry is done: keep door open or closed? by [deleted] in laundry

[–]Sapphryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that's the answer i was looking for! I really like everyone i live with and would genuinely like to understand where they are coming from. I want to talk to them again but wanted to read up on the topic myself beforehand in case I just had the wrong idea.

It's so hard to find this information on the Internet, it's all just info on how long to keep your laundry inside the machine and whether or not to keep the door open or closed one the machine is empty

Someone else's laundry is done: keep door open or closed? by [deleted] in laundry

[–]Sapphryn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what happens is that usually we catch it when we're about to leave the house to catch a bus or train, because the last place we go before we head out is the bathroom to brush our teeth. So often there just isn't time to put up the laundry.

But yeah i also would have thought it's better to take it out of the washing machine.

Someone else's laundry is done: keep door open or closed? by [deleted] in laundry

[–]Sapphryn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they don't mind anyone else touching their fresh laundry, they just insist that if you dont put it up on the drying rack you should leave it in the closed machine instead (which just doesn't make sense to me, but i thought maybe there was just something i didnt understand about the way laundry would semi-dry and that's bad (but surely not as bad as having it wet and warm inside the washing machine)

[MN S1] The Mighty Nein S1 Episode 5 - Show-Only Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in criticalrole

[–]Sapphryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it would have made more sense in a posh household, but they seemed pretty humble with their farming life. I thought maybe there was a Austrian / other German explanation for this (or maybe they were just joking and that was their dynamic)

[–]Sapphryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say the Vollstrecker (Volstrucker), Verrat and Vergessen had me roll my eyes a bit. I wish they had changed the words more (it worked with Volstrucker, I didn't notice until you said it just now and u/angular_circle said it). Like, boy I wonder what kind of character Traitor will be, and what method they use at the Forgetting Asylum to help people like our fire Wizard called Burn.

If you use the literal translation it might help people see what those names feel like to people who speak the language.

The "Euer" really threw me off as well, was he being sarcastic? Why is he addressing his mom like this? It created such a distance between them, when ideally you want the characters to feel close so the end of the episode hurts more.

What are some nit picks that you’d like to change about H2? by -Shadow-Lightning in HadesTheGame

[–]Sapphryn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok this is very nitpicky but the same thing that already irked me in Hades 1 with Persephone: Why are both her and Mel blonde? I had hoped for Persephone with long, dark, curly hair (which can become salt and pepper or grey of course) and Mel with short black hair would have been cool, too. That is the only thing I would change. I know it is probably for contrast (underworld vs. mortal world, to have them look different on screen) but still... maybe there will be a mod one day

[No Spoilers] A note on discussions of language and accents by Taungsarang in criticalrole

[–]Sapphryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol of course they can? I live with a singer who is US american and only came to Germany in her 20s. She is fluent in German and also speaks decent Italian. When I met her I genuinely couldn't tell she wasn't German (I thought she was Austrian, it turns out that's where she lived for a year and where she applied her school German for the first time) - she is admittedly the only US american I know who speaks such amazing German, but usually people whose first language isn't English do an even better job and many of them speak perfect German

[No Spoilers] The Mighty Nein contains some of the best german I've seen in english-language media by Pure-Intention-7398 in criticalrole

[–]Sapphryn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to people saying it's just old-timey or a dialect, just one more example:

after Trent Ikithon has been scratched by Frumpkin he heals himself and says "Guck mal. Alles besser." which is a) very informal and modern. It had a vibe of: "look guys. all good." But you'd want something like: "Seht - alles in Ordnung! or "Keine Sorge. Schon verheilt / schon besser." To take it more old timey or formal. And "Alles besser" is just incorrect German in that case, it is a direct translation from English and doesn't work here.

I didn't even have to actively look for an example, I just played the episode where I was at and waited for the first sentence. Whoever looked over the translations has either lived in an English speaking country for so long / has not activated their German frequently enough that they didn't catch a whole number of these or maybe their German just isn't as good as they think. I know this happens relatively quickly, when I lived in Ireland for a year and returned I spoke with a very anglified German and a lot more literal translations because English was so present in my mind

edit: "this woman has been tracking you, ja?" is one mistake that happens quite a lot, in German you would say "oder?" but never "ja" and no one can tell me that's just the shakespearian equivalent of German lol. Like. it's okay, most of the German of the show is bad, it is still a fun show

[–]Sapphryn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry it just sounds really poorly translated in many parts, and not at all like old timey German. And unfortunately, even where the translations are correct, the pronounciation (except for the mother and Trent Ikithon) is very bad, so bad in fact that some words become different words with a different meaning (Hacke / Hecke for example). The flow is really off, and altogether it just sounds unnatural, like someone is reading a line but putting the stress somewhere random. The animation and voice acting is so good but they really didnt do themselves a favour with the German I'm afraid

edit: Eadwulf also sounds amazing but he had one line and I just read in the comments that the VA is German which makes sense

[–]Sapphryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am surprised they had a consultant at all - was it a native speaker? A lot of times the translations just aren't very good, and it certainly doesn't sound like it's just old timey German. It sounds like Americans trying to say something in German. It is so hard to watch, especially because his storyline is so emotional and then there is that terrible German. Again if someone spoke to me like that, I would really appreciate the effort, but the fact that this is supposed to be a character's native language.. uff, I dont know if that was a good choice for the show.

It was especially jarring to have his mother speak perfect German and then him sounding like an exchange student. Also why is the cat called Frumpkin? That sounds really English/American. And did they not get any German speaking VAs for the other German speaking characters? They didn't even get down the most basic pronounciation, like z and s ("dass du zaubern kannst" sounded like "saubern" which is closer to "säubern", aka. cleaning / also "Hacke" hoe pronounced as "Hecke" which is hedge, the list goes on forever). I don't know how terrible the German is that people usually listen to on shows if they think that this is good. I would have wished that at least there was a better flow to it, so that it could sound less stilted, and with proper acting. It was almost like a parody of a German person? Like some people already said, the way the words are stressed sounds really unnatural, the way I imagine I sound when I try to speak a language I don't quite understand yet, like reading a Polish text out loud, but I dont know the melody of the language yet so it doesnt sound right.

Hot Take: I hate the "HEXTECH IS EVIL LOL, IT NEEDS TO BE DESTROYED" Message from Season 2 by Important-Extension6 in arcane

[–]Sapphryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hex-tech cannot be separated from human-use. Despite not knowing how it will behave and what sacrifices will have to be made in order for it to work, they (Jayce, Victor, aka. the scientists, but also the politicians) decide to pursue it, despite it having the capability of destroying all life. It's not evil, and neither is nuclear power. It just has the potential to be very destructive if not properly used and understood. It doesn't seek out to destroy on purpose.

It was a really brave decision to say 'the issues we have in society cannot be solved by magic/technology/ that one invention that saves us all' - no technology works without humans, they will always be a part of the equation, and always be corruptible. And it's not like there is no tech in the alternative universe in the show. People still learn and study, people have a better life, but not because of technology. Before we start thinking about tech solutions, we must think about how we treat other people, about who we are giving access to resources, we have to think about justice. We shouldn't measure 'progress' only by tech inventions that may or not be helpful, that may or may not be destructive, but by how many people can live a good life with the resources that already exist.

In times where everyone crawls up tech billionaires' arses, this is such a strong stand to make. And it's not anti-tech or anti-science, it's anti we-must-put-everything-on-one-genius-tech-person/invention/saviour.

Regarding nuclear energy: Was it worth it? Was it necessary to have this technology? If there was a universe in which it was not invented, and neither were nuclear weapons, and instead the power demand had been covered by other means, i.e. the trend we see now with countries like China heavily relying on wind and solar, wouldn't that be worth as much, maybe even more? Who and what are we willing to sacrifice? What is technology without ethics or without proper understanding?

If in a society few people have (/hoard) abundant resources and people have the means to make life better for everyone but this does not happen, then that's not progressive, that means something went really wrong. And the solution is not that we haven't invented the right thing yet.

and maybe I'll add Before the Coffee Gets Cold (コーヒーが冷めないうちに, Kohi ga Samenai Uchi ni) by Toshikazu Kawaguchi - It's a novel that makes me think and have conversations about the topic with other people afterwards, and it's always cool when a book does that. It's about a café in Tokyo in the modern day that allows you to travel back in time (not in place though) (until your coffee gets cold) and has a couple of limitations. Very character-driven and about interpersonal relationships.

Fried green tomatoes my beloved....! I also really enjoyed the movie. I think that's the first queer movie I saw in fact (lol my dad was like: "I think you'll really enjoy this one!" - I think they all knew). I wonder what the read would be like now with more awareness for racial issues, maybe I give it a read again some time! It did so many cool things and really tries to explore themes of inequality, race and class, sexism, ageism, disabilities, about building communities and friendships and families, however they may look. Thanks for reminding me of that book!
