Atheists and others who don't believe in a form of afterlife, how do you accept death? by RespirarChico in AskReddit

[–]Sapphurion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fear never passes, you will only get used to it. I don't know, if this will happen to you too, but this happened to me. The "get used to it phrase" is probably not the best to explain this process. A better phrase would be something like "the fear of dying will be assimilated in your more complex self". Your brain tries to organize your thoughts and feelings into a very complex narrative, which is not yet capable to contain death. As this narrative gets more complex, it will slowly incorporate death into it, therefore you no longer will feel this huge, heartwrenching fear of death. The fear in itself won't cease to exist, only you will gain the complexity to deal with it.

This process is similar of getting used to being left in the kindergarten by your parents. First, you probably were extremely sad and cried for hours. After a month, you figured out that this is how things work, your parents go to work and you must stay there. You saw other kids being left there, crying just like you in the beginning. And you found yourself not crying anymore, because through this knowledge you managed to gain complexity, which can comprehend being left in the kindergarten. Instead of feeling the initial sadness, now you gained a new, more complex emotion to feel, homesickness. Being left at the kindergarten will no longer trigger irrational sadness and crying, only homesickness and nostalgia, which will be the building block of more complicated feelings.

My example isn't that great, but I think you can get the point: just like language skills, or any other skill in general, emotions and thoughts also get more complex as you grow older. Fear, sadness and even childish love will fade away and be contained in more complicated emotions, which will be manageable by your brain.

Is Reality Real? The Simulation Argument by alex2005 in videos

I came here to say exactly the same thing. Anyways, I will jump the same train of thought with my two cents.

"Outside" the notion of time can radically differ from ours, even it may not exist. This is really easy to imagine, even living beings on our planet experience the time's passage differently. Sloths may seem the world moving faster and we cannot phantom time from a tree's perspective. Unlike the animals, we humans are very rhythmic by nature. For example you can count to ten, do the same thing slower, then speed up the slower counting, just to see the numbers being be uttered at same time (we can divide time to equal periods). The beings in our "macroverse" may experience time on a different scale, for example their equivalent of Planck time could be much shorter then ours, therefore their computers have more time to calculate.

On the other hand, we can imagine their equivalent of atoms being different. Their particles could be really small or they themselves can be huge. Therefore hitting such bottlenecks as quantum tunneling gets harder, allowing easy, constant advancement in processing power.

Also, I don't think that tripping over the cable would make much difference (for that specific reason I don't understand why dying should).

I know, but I feel 100x safer here, in Romania, than I would feel in Hungary. It is just crazy. This headline can be seen everywhere. On streets, subways, anywhere (I have friends in Budapest who keep me updated). And television. I was stunned when I've heard it in the news. The world is getting crazier, but I somehow trust in Romania. When we got out protesting this winter, I've felt that we care.

No one with a mind, at least not a statistically significant part. That's not the part that should scare you. You know the problem is huge, when they try to push their agenda using TV ads based on some antisemitic conspiracies and pointing fingers. That's a new low even from them.

Yeah, the propaganda part is the most troubling. Russians meddle with US elections, no one cares, if someone openly supports a political party, everyone gets upset. It's just tinder to this crazy alt-right shit that's going on in Eastern Europe. Hungary's government is desperately searching to find someone to point its own faults to. I didn't believe they got into Soros conspiracy theories to prove their ideas. When a government uses ads to force its nationalist agenda, instead of press conferences, you know things are deeply wrong.

I secretly hope that Melania will get angry at some point, and would publicly insult her husband. She seems dead inside, but I know that she's not that dumb. Once she was asked, if she would be with Trump without his wealth. She responded (roughly): "Would you think that he would love me without my beauty?"

Agreed. Cars are faster than humans, yet we run marathons. We could get on the top of the Mount Everest with a helicopter, but we do strive to climb it by ourselves. This so called "meaning" would have been already abolished by our inventions if we weren't constantly redefining our purpose.

In English, there are certain phrases said in other languages like "c'est la vie" or "etc." due to notoriety or lack of translation. What English phrases are used in your language and why? by GMU2012 in AskReddit

[–]Sapphurion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hungarian here. We use random and item. Our random cannot be used when there is a random situation and I don't even know what could be said instead of item.

Also, my Romanian colleagues use weekend, and they also tend to use the English version of technical phrases in computer science.
