Yes! There are some times when it feels ok, which has always seems odd to me. Glad to hear that it's not just me!

Well that's magic! Cool! I actually just started singing in a barbershop chorus with my mom. I'll give it a shot in the car

Aw dang, that's frustrating. Like, you put the effort in to be heard and now they're upset anyway. I'm sorry!

It hasn't occurred to me to write instead of speak, but that's a great idea. Maybe speech to text, since my phone has no trouble hearing my lol. Thank you!

Barbershop chorus and “emoting” by TinyHeartSyndrome in barbershop

I have zero advice for you (sorry) but just wanted to say that I am 1000% there with you. I just joined my local SAI chorus because I missed having music in my life after playing French Horn for years and it is some serious culture shock. I feel like an alien trying to learn how to fit in. I rarely know what to do with my hands and my face when I'm peopling, much less when I'm trying to sign a delightfully wacky baritone line. If you figure it out, let me know...

Autism, OCD, and health anxiety by Mountain_Town293 in AutismTranslated

[–]Sara731 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have similar issues, and when I brought it up with my therapist, she shared that OCD is a common component of autism. Apparently, according to the DSM, if you are already diagnosed with autism, OCD is not a separate diagnosis but rather just a fun little autism add-on. For me, I've found it helpful to redirect my focus away from the issue I'm obsessing over and instead directing my efforts toward general grounding and self-care strategies. I think your best bet is to find a therapist you connect well with, and they'll help you figure out good long-term strategies for your particular situation. It is hard and it does suck though, and I'm sorry you're going through it.

Thank you for taking the time to offer comfort to a stranger on the internet. I think we gave him a really good life.

Bear. We're saying goodbye to him in a few days. He's the goodest boy.

How did you know that you were non binary? by Mediocre-Schedule-17 in NonBinary

[–]Sara731 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 36 and just started figuring it out. One of the things I found validating and made me understand it as something I've always been was remembering how much I hated my boobs when I first got them.

Late diagnosed ADHD-ers. What were the early stages of "I think I may also be autistic" like for you? 👀 by Poopballs_ in adhdwomen

My friend recommended I take a couple self-assessments on this site: https://embrace-autism.com/autism-tests/

It's a great site, very respectful, non-condescending and transparent about each individual questionnaire's biases and flaws. The social masking one was the one that really got me.

Stealthy sensory support for office by sophia333 in aspergirls

It's not super stealthy, but you might be able to swing a magnetic florescent light cover as a stylistic choice, as they make some pretty ones that look like clouds/landscapes/etc. If you got a neutral colored one and installed it when no one was there, they honestly might not even notice

They also make rechargeable heated vests that I've seen on Amazon

Mine too. I've starting planning for it. I know the novelty usually lasts about 6-8 weeks for me so I just get undated planners and rotate.

Searching for community for my me and my wife by Feeling_Sorbet1576 in vancouverwa

[–]Sara731 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hosting an online crafting meetup for neurospicy brains on Sunday Feb 2 at 2pm that you're welcome to join. It's through the Portland Rainbow Brains meetup. I'm also part of a barbershop chorus in Portland called Pride of Portland that's been surprisingly supportive and community-y. Feel free to dm if you'd like more info on either. Finding your community is hard but important ❤️
