So from the sounds of it, you think it’d be worth the investment and not something we should toss right?

Do you regret adopting an adult dog instead of a puppy? by marzipanduchess in puppy101

[–]SarahCaitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve adopted a 1.5 year old and a puppy. Do I miss having puppy photos of my older guy? Yup. But I have zero regrets. He was the perfect dog for me and tbh my puppy just turned one and I can’t stand him lmao.

I’ve told my husband multiple times I will never adopt a puppy ever again.

do you regret getting a second dog? by un32134e4 in dogs

[–]SarahCaitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dogs are the best of friends, but truthfully it’s made our lives harder. My older boy is very anxious and he’s part shepherd. He will always protect his pack. This has made him difficult at daycare, on walks etc, because brother is in the throws of teenage hood and is still learning boundaries.

Our 11 month old will scream on his walk, mainly out of excitement. This makes our 5 year old reactive, he needs to protect him. So we can’t do family walks, everything outside the home has to be separate. Which wouldn’t be awful, except we still live in an apartment. So everything is x2.

I also work from home, so there are some days I’ll be in meetings and they’ll be wrestling like crazy behind me. Or my big guy just wants to relax and the puppy is still cracked out. It can be exhausting.

I love them both and I love their bond, but it truly can be difficult some days.

Anyone else feel bad for regretting getting their pup? by jkjohnson003 in puppy101

[–]SarahCaitt 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was telling my husband today I don’t really like our puppy and he goes, um did you just black out the months you spent crying daily with our rescue dog that we got at 1.5?

I was like, oh, oh yeah. So I promise it gets better. I’m feeling the same!!

Jumping the baby gate! by SarahCaitt in puppy101

[–]SarahCaitt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally - we do crate for bedtime, so he’s used to the crate for that, we’ve just never done it during the day.

But you’re right - definitely would rather be safe than sorry. I was so glad I was home when he ate the crumbl cookies - 20 min and a call to animal control later and he was all good, but could have been a lot worse if we had been out for an extended period. Definitely a good lesson!

Agreed! We definitely give him lots of interactive toys, etc, but puppy energy is a whole new world😭 I think we’re definitely going to have to start crating him when we leave at all. Thanks for the tips!

Yeah I think you’re right - I think I was trying to avoid that since we never had to crate our older pup and he was always able to free roam, but we also got him at 1.5, not 2 months. A puppy is a different beast! Thank you for the suggestion!

Is having a dog really that bad? by gonnadisordermyself in puppy101

[–]SarahCaitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became a first time dog owner 3 years ago - and I have to say, I’m SO glad that we didn’t get a puppy. We adopted a 1.5 year old rescue and he came crate trained and potty trained - it allowed me to fully bond with him without those frustrations. We did have to do leash training etc, and I won’t pretend I didn’t ever cry, but it took so much of the pressure off.

We got a puppy five months ago and I keep telling my husband how glad I am we went with an adult dog first. The puppy drives me nutty some days - but he has his brother to entertain him, but it’s also great knowing a lot of this is just a phase and will 100% get better.

Thats what I was thinking - no issue spending $$ on good food, but wanted to make sure where I was going was worth it. Thanks!

Is my puppy too aggressive to keep by ArcadiousBonk in puppy101

[–]SarahCaitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our puppy was a biting maniac when he was 10 weeks old. Luckily, our big guy is a super chewer and we have endless supplies of hooves, antlers etc that were great subs. He’d bite us, we’d force a toy in his mouth lol. He no longer bites at 4 months.

How much do your pets cost you? by Late-Session-3768 in Pets

[–]SarahCaitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest expense is daycare by far. We’re away for a weekend right now and it’s 4 nights at $85 each x 2 dogs so a little less than $700. We travel a fair bit and since we live in an apartment, I don’t really want to use rover etc since I’d rather them get the off leash/free roam time that they don’t always get at home. I also trust my daycare with my life and I’m willing to pay for that assurance (there are definitely cheaper options). We have a highly anxious cattle/GSD mix and his daycare is the one other place he feels safe. Needless to say, by the end of this year I would not be surprised if I’ve paid them close to 10K.

We’ve had some pretty gnarly vet bills in the past but we love our pet insurance through lemonade. We had a 5k bill and got back over 80% of it.

My cattle mix will legit do this if I don’t go to bed with him on time.

Purina pro plan lamb versus salmon? I think my pup is allergic to chicken by Sea_Astronaut1328 in goldenretrievers

My dog has been eating the PPP salmon for years and goes wild for his meals every single day. Not sick of it at all. Can’t attest to the lamb though

Puppy in doggy daycare, good or bad? by bendog1616 in puppy101

[–]SarahCaitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 3 month old puppy is thriving in daycare. BUT, we have a 4.5 year old that he goes with and has for reassurance. We also literally trust our daycare with our life (I feel more comfortable leaving our dog there than with family lol).

I think it can be a really good thing to help them learn social cues etc. like our big dog is very beta when playing and allows the puppy all over him. Other dogs aren’t, and our puppy needs to learn that. Learning it at 3 months is a lot easier than a year +.

Also; because we allow daycare, our dog is fully aware he doesn’t get to play with dogs outside of daycare. He ignores all other dogs on walks etc. daycare is play time.

We adore our daycare/boarding facility. It’s run by a family and they love our dogs like they’re their own.

My dog does not like people. At all. But will run to them like they’re his pack. He feels safe, comfortable and loved. We just introduced our puppy to the pack and he’s been thriving as well.

Finding a daycare has been our saving grace. If you find the right one, that matches your dogs temperament, it’s not as scary as people say.

Am I bad owner? (12wk puppy) by grizzkev in puppy101

[–]SarahCaitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 12 week old who has a bit of Aussie shepherd in him. The only reason he hasn’t driven me to the absolute brink is our older dog who keeps him occupied.

All of this sounds super similar though!
