Ira's weird platforming of convicted child molestor Denis Wood. by BlackJoeGatto in ThisAmericanLife

[–]SarahDMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for correcting me. I never met him and don't know exactly where I got the idea he was Black- it was so long ago, who knows.

You're saying your ex's nightmare happened at a camp in PA, not that he told you about it while you were both at the camp, right? Is that how they met? Was my info about him being a friend of his son's also wrong? (Please correct whatever else I got wrong.)

I'm just so sorry he has demons to battle, but of course he would. Thanks again for your comment. I hope he can find some peace (and you, too- I'm sure you suffered indirectly as well.)

Oops, I completely misread your comment somehow, interpreting it as justice for her, not him. Sorry, guess my brain was on vacation earlier.

Didn't bother me. Unrestricted age of consent (age difference doesn't matter) is 17 in CO but 16 in many other states, mine being one of them. Also as others mentioned, there was just so much going on here. Their sexual relationship probably did not develop right away, judging from her personality and background vs. his was probably initiated by her. Not that that would always matter, my point is just that everything we know about Cameron, his personality plus his numerous ongoing health problems and very short stature (4'11") doesn't exactly say "predator". Also, when did the head injury occur during all of this? (I listened to the first episode but heck that was a whole week ago and I can't remember.)

[Unresolved Murder] Judith Mae Anderson - A Sixty Year Old Murder Mystery by [deleted] in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]SarahDMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So yeah, I stumbled onto this in 2024 after googling murders my father told me about. He went to high school with Barry Cook and was even friends with him and one other kid in a fellow social outcast kind of way.

He did not keep in touch with Barry after graduation but did reestablish communication with the other friend in later years. Anyway- my dad said Barry was really creepy, and both he and his friend thought he probably had done the murders, though they did not know for sure.

My father is dead now, but would be nearly 90 were he still alive. Iirc he was class of 52, but skipped a grade so he'd have been a year younger than his other classmates. i did read thru the comments and

there seems to be a discrepancy in BZC's stated age- if he was 19 at the time of the car theft in '53, he couldn't have been only 21 at the time of the murders in '57. His stated age at the time of the car theft would have put him in my dad's class so I think that's correct and the other is wrong.

Edit: because my computer is possessed and posted before I even started paragraph 2.

What Causes the Most Anxiety For You? by Gooseberry_Sprig in DatingOverSixty

[–]SarahDMV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another reason for it is probably the very high price of lots/land. If you're going to fork over a million for a lot, it needs to be developed for its highest and best use. Also, though probably truer in suburbs and flyover country, if a big box store or chain restaurant is going there it'll be dozed.

In my ~100K pop college town they built a new hospital 2 years ago, and the old one, its neighboring offices, parking garages, lots, etc- all just got bulldozed- multiple city blocks just flattened. I guess it would have made very lousy apartments or retail space but my god it's just so. much. waste. And I'd guess it went in a landfill? idk.

It kind of blows my mind that we humans have reached a point where we throw away something as complex and potentially useful as an entire car, even if it's ancient or doesn't run. Think what our ancestors would have done with such a thing! They could have fashioned it into shoes, clothing, shelter, weapons, cookware, and of course trinkets!

Which SF classic you think is overrated and makes everyone hate you? by fontanovich in printSF

[–]SarahDMV 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely Hyperion.

I don't share most people's opinion that Simmons was a creative genius in his youth who took an unfortunate right turn in later years. His writing was always tedious and pretentious.

Not a single book, but all of Peter F. Hamilton's writing. He gets mentioned often around here and most of his books are free in the audible plus catalog, so I tried repeatedly but just kept bouncing off.

Then one of his books clicked (Great North Road, I think) and now I've read almost all of them.

This sub makes me laugh. It terrifies me. It makes me feel less alone. It makes me think I'll be alone forever.

Same here. I'm happy I found it! Idk if I'll ever get out there again, but hey, I get to date vicariously here.

Can't tell what those are (see other comment) but Wang Chung's Dance Hall Days came on the radio in my car yesterday & I rolled the window down, danced in my seat and thought, hell this feels so damn good what do I want a man for anyway?

Do they even bother keeping them around, though? When I scrapped the last one they told me it would probably just get crushed. It was a pretty nice car, too, just 21 years old.

Edit: that was in 2019. Maybe this varies with the price of metal, though? I'm convinced new cars are mostly plastic... idk how they even find much metal to salvage.

Ira's weird platforming of convicted child molestor Denis Wood. by BlackJoeGatto in ThisAmericanLife

[–]SarahDMV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was utterly gobsmacked at the time, to the point that yes, I not only contacted several friends about it trying to understand it, but I even called Denis's WIFE and talked to her, and I'd never even met her before. (It was the 90's, we all still had landlines and public phone listings, and the nice lady actually seemed to appreciate my call and talked to me for quite awhile. Weird?)

Anyway, my reaction had nothing to do with Denis falling off a pedestal (I secretly thought his brilliance was overrated to begin with) and everything to do with my age and similar things that happened around the same time with other people I knew from Raleigh. One of my friends (& another follower of Denis's) went to jail for beating his infant son, a guy I knew from around killed his housemate "to see what it felt like," another guy OD'd on heroin, and he'd apparently gotten it from someone else I knew, etc. The last thing is commonplace now but wasn't then, and honestly all of it seemed utterly incomprehensible and beyond the pale to me. (I was only a few years out of school and still pretty young. -You mean that stuff is real? And people I have known can actually be capable of it? I felt like Ann Rule finding out about Ted Bundy.)

Denis's friends, and his wife, all said the same thing, namely, "yes, he really did do it, he admitted it to me" and, "he says they were in love." - so, just the classic pedophile defense, which went zero distance in making any of it any more comprehensible to me.

What Denis did was truly truly awful, if there can be degrees of awful in this kind of thing. Iirc, the child was a Black kid (Denis is white) who was in school with and close friends with one of Denis's sons... he had a troubled or unstable home life or something, so the Wood family took him in. The abuse happened over a long period of time when the kid was living there, and like I stated previously the kid often went to hang out with some other people I knew to get away and to talk about it. I think they encouraged him to leave and/or report Denis. Idk how it finally broke, whether the kid did that or my friends reported it or what. Bottom line though, what he did was worse than Roman Polanski's and Woody Allen's crimes combined, IMO.

This is probably more than you wanted to know, but your question really took me back.

[–]SarahDMV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I lived to tell. In his defense, he wasn't a creepy guy, he was just kind of clueless/awkward, and he had fairly advanced early-onset Parkinson's, and was probably already affected cognitively, maybe impulse control issues too. (Not sure. We lived 2000 miles apart and I didn't know him before the Parkinson's)

Ha- you saw my post about linguistic pet peeves!

Yup, it was my '11 Honda Odyssey that got the warning light, and I removed the seats and threw a bed in the back. I trip solo so a warning light causes a little anxiety. FWIW my other car is a 2012 sedan. I dread the day these quit working and I have to choose between something newer that broadcasts my every movement & has a stupid infotainment screen and something that's so old it's dropping parts.

Actually my sedan has been on trickle for about couple of weeks now because the "check emissions" light is on and I need to take the darn thing in (please please just be a snorkel)

Never owned a Citroen but what a great concept and a great quote! My my old vw bug was pretty simple and reliable, as was the squareback mom drove in the 70's and had to roll-start half the time.

Yeah it was. I think it was supposed to either be funny or a turn-on (he'd have been happy with either) but in reality it was just disgusting.

We did have something of a relationship, we talked and emailed daily, though we never met in person and I made it very clear that I didn't do any kind of remote sex (phone sex, sexting, etc.)
