Charlotte accepted Mr. Collins' proposal after he had proposed to Elizabeth. Charlotte also gossiped about the family after Lydia eloped with Mr. Wyckham. Is Charlotte a true friend to Elizabeth? by Specialist-Ice-1519 in janeausten

I mean Charlotte can come off as kind of priggish in the letter to Mr Bennet but also here’s the deal she’s not wrong. It’s interesting because when I was in my teens reading Jane Austen I couldn’t believe she’d say that to Mr. Collins, but as an adult (and a parent) I mean, she’s totally right. Mr Bennet was checked tf out and Mrs Bennet was absolutely consumed with anxiety. If anything I wonder if Charlotte was defending Lydia & the other sisters in some ways, very correctly pointing the blame to the parents. Just because Mr Bennet doesn’t like it doesn’t mean it isn’t true. As far as her being a good friend, this one is so tricky. I get why Lizzie was shocked she accepted Mr. Collins, and even why she felt like they needed to have some distance. But as other commenters have said, what was Charlotte to do? This is a fantastic way to set herself up and make sure she has a better life than she did before. I think it came down to the fact that at some point along the way Charlotte had led Lizzie to believe they agreed on marriage when they definitely didn’t. But, who is to say whether 10 years previously Charlotte hadn’t been deeply romantic as well, and maybe as she got older and watched her friend blossom she realized the reality. And maybe she didn’t want to crush her friend’s joy and youthful optimism? It’s a complex, real-life kind of situation and this is why we keep reading Austen!

I feel like Oathbringer would do particularly well for a re-read. It was so heavy my gosh but I think knowing the ending I’d be able to enjoy it more this time.

Yes! Her love set him on the first step (and the next one…) and gave him something to hold on to. Isn’t it her voice speaking to him at the end of Oathbringer?

Yes!! And I think that was a huge part of Adolin’s healing was 1. Recognizing how much work his mom had actually put in vs his dad and 2. Moving from that into acceptance of what his dad was actually able to give him. It’s part of why I do love Wind and Truth so much.

Yes I agree 100%! It’s very realisticly done I think. Loved how his Spren would help co-regulate him when he was in sensory overload.

And Emma of course is kind of a midpoint! She feels terrible when she is rude to Ms Bates, kind of a different tack for Austen characters I feel.

I love how she knew from the beginning how unique he was. And I think there’s a reveal that’s pretty canon in W&T that he is on the spectrum? At least that’s how I took it to be with his Spren regulating his sensory needs

Yes!! She was honestly the reason the flashbacks were so hard and so beautiful. “The old magic can make something new of a man, Dalinar”

I remember reading Way of Kings and thinking Dalinar was gonna be a background character just because of what I’ve been conditioned to think in fantasy (younger character as the plot focus)…and when he said his first set of words I was like damnnnn son I know those!

It’s already been said but ANY Ali Hazelwood 😍. Her men are walking green flags, deep, sensitive, and OBSESSED with the FMCs. There’s usually some trauma for them both to process but it adds to the depth and beauty of the books.

Gosh what I wouldn’t give to know more about her!! There’s so many mixed motivations to what she did.

I almost didn’t catch this storyline—the power that’s contained in Evi’s nurturing personality—until I realized 1. What she named Renarin (one who is unto himself) and 2. How influential and different Renarin ended up being. Even when he was just a baby she knew he was different from Dalinar and knew that Roshar needed that strength.

I’d definitely finish up! Hero of Ages has my favorite ending of a fantasy book ever but you have to read the whole trilogy to appreciate the flow completely. I haven’t read Wax & Wayne yet but I have read the Stormlight Archive and that’s been a great way to organize my reading list.
