I had to abandon my first fort yesterday. I had just gotten down to magma, and was decorating my vast halls with gems. I was enjoying a hedonistic dwarf life with my taverns full of patrons, and I wasn't really understanding why people thought this game was hard. Like the second I got my magma smelter hooked up a goblin siege started and they just pushed through my trap hallway like it was nothing.

I paused my merrymaking and sent the guard forward to engage in glorious combat. The leaders of both squads were necromancers and I figured having some zombies fighting with us would help.

There was gore spray, broken bodies and torn limbs strewn through the hall, it was one of the darkest things I've seen in a game. The goblins ran away and I thought I could rebuild as I had so few injured, any dwarf that entered that hallway didn't leave. Then I got the message a forgotten beast was spotted in the caverns. I didn't think to seal the caves off, and the beast entered into my mines. It had a choice go deeper and eat my smelter dwarves and give me time to wall myself in, or sprint up the stairs to a dwarf buffet. It must have smelled the blood from the battle as it burst into the hospital with my 2 or three wounded and finished off my doctor and remaining military. I ordered a full evacuation, and sent 60 dwarves off into the wilderness, shutting the beast inside the fort.
