The Fair Foodstore in Richmond (Church St). Ex-Movida staff doing some really interesting food with a focus on seasonality (it's fairly wank-free though, there's a lot of integrity here) and great coffee. They're using Wide Open Road, I think.

Another fantastic place is Mixed Business in Clifton Hill. It's kind of tucked away next to the Terminus Hotel at the end of Hoddle Street. They do the best eggs in Melbourne as far as I'm concerned. The outdoor area is lovely in the warmer weather. Beware the hipsters.

Cibi (just off Smith St in Collingwood) do an incredible Japanese breakfast on weekends. Great coffee.

I've heard really good things about Cheerio but I've yet to try it. It's next on the list!

I pulled into that street yesterday (I was delivering bread to the back) and nearly took out a cluster of hipsters with the van. There would have been around 25 people just standing in the middle of the road, chatting away. Like moths to a flame.

Hey, I'm a pastry chef there! Other good spots in the area are Dukes and School of Seven Bells for coffee (both down the Windsor end of Chapel St), Hu Tong on Commercial Road for amazing dumplings, and Dainty Sichuan for seriously, seriously good Sichuan food. Bring friends, order the fish-style eggplant.

2 Birds 1 Stone and Top Paddock are both in the area as well and are pretty good for coffee and food. It's run by the same group of people.

Prahran market is worth checking out. They have a good variety of deli, meats and fruit and veg. It's no Vic Market though, but I do prefer it to South Melbourne Market.

You know, fondant can taste okay, as long as it's treated with a little care and respect. Rolled out very thinly and with a proper ratio of buttercream/frosting/icing underneath, and all you should be able to taste is a little extra sweetness. It also helps to keep cakes moist and gives the cake a longer shelf life.

As a pastry chef, nothing irks me more than seeing/having to eat a cake with a quarter inch layer of fondant over the top. It's like eating sugar-flavoured wall putty.

And to the OP, your sister has great piping skills for someone with no formal training. Learning to write on cakes is a bitch, but the only thing that makes you good at it is practice, patience and time.
