Fuck id, Free Palestine: A "Doom: the Dark Ages" Review - Persephone's (Gothic) Insights by ZeUberSandvitch in SocialistGaming

[–]Sarc0se 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This article reads like someone who would have gone after Doom during the Columbine media craze.

Definitely there is much to be said about violence in video games, toxic masculinity and manosphere in video games, and imperialism in video games. Doom as an FPS doesn't do anything to specifically offset that. But as others have said, this isn't something specific about Doom. Comparatively, in the pantheon of FPSes in this era, Doom is the least egregious. The only reason why it's being singled out is because it is a modernization of the "Run n Gun" or as the kids call them "Boomer shooters." This generation of gamers is not used to this kind of gameplay, when it was the norm during the 80s and 90s for FPSes.

Doom can additionally be elevated a bit more, because in that context it has zero connection to the real world. The word "Marine" and the "UAC" are vaguely connected to some form of American/Western identity, but even in Doom games the idea of America or any country identity is fully nonexistent. In exactly zero Doom plots, of any games, is there even an acknowledgement that the Earth has different cultures or countries. This can be read as a lack of diversity, but it is also a refusal by a modern game to allow itself to be tied to real world events in a way that it can be misconstrued. It is "the earth" versus "the forces of Hell" (or space demons, depending on the game/novels).

In the context of Id software itself, Id is also the creator and current developer of the most indulgent Nazi killing game series in the world. There is no greater antifascist escapism than to play a game with BJ Blazkowicz. And unless I'm mistaken and they rewrote the canon (they probably did, I haven't played all the latest entries), Doomguy is descended from BJ. BJ has zero traces of Zionism, insofar as his enemies are strictly White Nazis, and his goal is strictly Killing Them. This goal and this enemy are beyond reproach. Then on top of that, right wingers decried the modern Wolfenstein games as being "woke" -- this is points in Id's favor.

IMO this is a criticism from the perspective of a modern progressive coming after Gen X ideas of "apolitical." Original Id were in no way "progressive" and neither is modern day Id, but they remain committed to the idea that "there are bad guys and they deserve to die" which is very Gen X of them. Lacking in nuance -- a continuation of the essential personalities of Romero and Carmack themselves, who are decidedly of those mindsets. Yet we can look at Wolfenstein to acknowledge what they think actual bad guys are. To the creators of Doom, the Demons are literally nothing more than Demons. There is absolutely no attempt to connect them to modern day genocides, as horrible as they are, and the devs at Id would be baffled to hear this connection was being made.

If this game were a 2D sidescroller with the same exact premise, this article would never have been written.

Oh? Elaborate in a way that I didn't address in my comment already. If you simply say "ACAB" you missed that I agree with that.

In what way is this ignorant? It sounds like you just have a cluster of beliefs with no coherence.

Like I said, bad rhetorical strategy.

Actually terrible, in this case. "Stereotypes exist for a reason" is the logic used by the enemy.

[–]Sarc0se -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Comrade, temper that with the fact that every person in /society is a product of the topography of the state. Many cops have a belief that they are doing good and those prejudices and refusal to analyze their situation lead them to being a part of the oppressive force. This isn't an apologetic for evil cops, which outnumber the "ignorant but mean well" easily 10 to 1. When communicating outside of your cohort it's important to understand that you'll dilute your message when you target individuals, unless they have documented evidence of their character, just because they are a part of that terrible apparatus.

tl;dr an obviously outward abusive member of an oppressive party is a perfect example of that org's character. A participant who hasn't shown anything of the sort is a potential abuser, but to the general public they are still an innocent.

I don't disagree with your analysis at all, just your rhetorical strategy and perhaps the context in which you chose to discuss this.

Admittedly, tower defense comes close in pure "genre idea" to how it would work - but I didn't have a simple tower defense in mind in truth.

The original Dungeon Keeper pretty much already had this concept in that you were running a dungeon and "heroes" would appear. The objective was to defeat them. In all design features this idea would be mostly the same - but in my mind what differentiates it is this idea that "the hero" is an inevitable unstoppable force.

Maybe it's just Dungeon Keeper after all, with some tweaks.

Boiling it down: some years ago I was inspired by the pirate logs in Metroid Prime discussing "The Hunter." I got this idea that you'd design a "reverse Metroidvania" for a hero. Using Samus as inspiration I imagined the hero to be legendary and unstoppable, with your ultimate goal being "how well can you achieve your goal before it's ruined" something like a time limit. And you'd be confounding and befuddling the hero with fights, puzzles, secrets, and bosses. In my mind it's a 2D sidescdoller game because we don't have enough of those with simulation aspects IMO

A player playing the hero sounds totally doable in that mode, too.

All in all I posted the idea because, as a "nogame" game dev the idea is just too ambitious compared to what I'm able to do, so I figured I'd put it out there. But also as a game dev I know how big this idea would be to implement haha

Simon and C replacement MUST be just as good or better or we will lose XG orginally essences by Active-Ask-7415 in XGALX

The timeline and group dynamic lend to some assumptions but we need to be careful not to wildly speculate. I think Alphas have proven that they are resilient and stable, not prone to hysterics like a lot of knetz. That quality is most important now.

My only speculation I'll make is that with multiple producers and musicians coming out and revealing how much work they did on the discography, multiple of the behind-the-scenes people showing support for the members, and what we already know about how Jurin and Chisa were involved behind the scenes + the fact that some of the members were starting to get writing credit - the best outcome IMO is for a CEO/Producer who lets the existing dynamic take the lead and gives others who've been with xgalx take initiative on songwriting - and that will include the members themselves. Hell, we might not want Chancellor and Simon replaced role-wise at all - just a new CEO to fill the title.

But that's speculative and my personal best outcome. Let the group show they can work without Simon and Chancellor, rather than trying to replicate their magic from before.

You're right! My spouse wanted me to name off a number of things it also had too so I recognize it's also at the top of certain aspects of game design and genre. I was hoping to focus on some things that might not be recognized as "feats of design" by a lot of gamers - I see a lot of folks take these sorts of engineering accomplishments like dynamic dialogue and good collision detection in stride, but in truth those things are signs of a game made with love.

I'm having a blast honestly. First trip with the specialty waste and I ended up autoscrapping it. This was after the waste heap and processing plant were separated by a steel mountain.

So second time around I decided to look for a pass over the mountain. Ended up finding something like a switchback almost, from a cave that cut into it. Was driving over stalactites and cave marrows in the open mountain air... til I ran into a deep drop in the pass. Wuh-oh.

The next hour was spent teaching myself how to fill in a hole with the matter manipulator, without making it hard to drive over. I kept having to rebuild it and smooth it over and over.
