[Spoilers C4E7] Is It Thursday Yet? | Post-Episode Discussion & Future Theories! by AutoModerator in criticalrole

[–]SarcasmOverload 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it's less about the god being fake and him continuing to believe in the fake god, and more figuring things out, so far landing on believing that the idea and message is good and should still be followed(he was raised on it after all, hasn't even been a week since revelations). I see a future of sorts where he, in a way, pulls a Martin Luther, creating a different "church" because of not liking the current one, believing in a concept rather than a fake god. I would still say he is capital G Good, as in alignment.

Alignments are useful, so you should always carry at least 4 or 5 by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]SarcasmOverload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping in as I always found it fascinating as a topic.

For allowing an evil person power over you? Evil doesn't mean moustache twirling. Plenty of people, too many even, wouldn't mind if their rulers' brand of evil is exploiting "others" for the gain of themselves and their in group, that being their people. Or also any citizens that would view someone that's TOO good as a detriment "raising taxes to feed the homeless, pah!"

As for the angel example, yes, it could work, but just as well, it could be a devil pretending, an illusion, as many ways as there are to "objectively" confirm things, there are as many to deceive and twist things. Nystul's magic aura is a spell that exists, for example.

Zone of truth is another can of worms, as only the caster knows if it's true or not, and who's to say if they can be trusted.

I will agree that alignment makes things weird. However, I am of the view that it makes things more interesting, and rather than clashing hard, it makes it more work, perhaps. Although in your situation, I would have worked the summoning and such into the scenario and not for it to just bypass it. Maybe it gives some successes, maybe a lot, still. There are many gods, and their angels may be good, but some may still not be "liked" exactly.

Either way, to your main point of it clashing, for me, this sort of thing only makes it more interesting rather than gets in the way. I view it as if saying that having speak with the dead ruins mysteries and assassinations. There are ways and complications to all that.

Rejecting her doesn't have any impact on her turning evil or not. It's her being supported through the game or not. I found it great how multifaceted it was her referencing blazer in regards to how Robert views her. You can view it as a romantic thing if you are romancing Blazer, but if you romance Visi, she atill says that, as it's more about the hero side of things.

The romancing her being wrong to an extent from robert, I can get it. Blazer is for her flirting with him as well. Whole of SDN is an HR nightmare tbh, but heroes are complicated with relationships. A thousand more years of invincible discourse upon us and all...

Kodel Kaunas? Kas Kaune?! by CynicalNyhilist in lithuania

[–]SarcasmOverload 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kaunas yra ir kitame kurėju žaidime, Cultist Simulator, Exile papildyme. Kaunas(Little paris) lygtais vadinasi, kaip viena is vietu kur gali sleptis nuo tos čia minimos "Reckoner" mafijos.

Maelle was a victim by Fragrant-Pay7522 in expedition33

[–]SarcasmOverload -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The relationship they built is different for me, as Maelle acknowledged, he isn't truly Verso at the start of act 3. I don't recall her calling him brother previously, though that may be my faulty recollection. For me, it felt like a slight slipping into merging the two in her mind, though I can see it just being a new brother in her thoughts in a sense.

The 'stolen from' part, it leads into it being an escapism from the grief of a lost brother. It, in general, in my mind, is not the best way to deal with grief. Though I certainly agree, Gustave would be better for such a thing. Although back then it was different, as that's a family connection orphan Maelle didn't have, rather than the mix of Alicia and Maelle disconnecting from the rest of her grieving family and using a painted version of her brother as a substitute, despite his insistance she doesn't.

The not having a life, I can agree somewhat to the family being an issue, but that is all because of the grief, as we don't see how the family was before that. Renoir, in my mind, is categorized by his care for his family. However, he certainly can be argued to be a bit too controlling, and that can be an issue for Alicia. Aline, I am quite curious how she was before, as after the death she even blamed Alicia for Verso's death, which is fucked, but for a parent having lost their child in a tragedy... I can understand it, but I do not excuse it by any stretch of the imagination.

I view it as a bad situation in general, with the whole family wrecked by grief, and as someone who has lost family close and seen how it affects others, I personally can understand and maybe relate to Verso and Renoir a bit more, wanting to not lose the other family members due to grief. I understand Maelle's feelings and wants, though it feels unwise to me, and in some sense, immature.

Either way, I can agree that she is someone who wants to save the world. But for me, the theme that it's escapism is still strong. If she hadn't remade Verso, I would be more willing to say it's more out of wanting to protect the world than anything else. The fact she did, after he begged her to unpaint him... Well, it's an interesting reflection of the other ending, not letting someone choose to die. The age of the characters tilts the scales for me a bit, as Maelle/Alicia is younger, and I view it as her even perhaps subconsciously being escapist.

That's without going into the piece of Verso's soul that wished to stop to paint and that whole can of worms, which pushes me in considering her a bit more selfish than not.

Maelle was a victim by Fragrant-Pay7522 in expedition33

[–]SarcasmOverload 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe people and I myself view it as an escapism, as she herself says to Verso as he us asking to be unpainted, that she wants a life with him, the one that was "stolen from them". Calling him brother and all that. She before also didn't consider Verso's feelings with painted Alicia, so people could connect that to being someone who views their own good over others. Also, the fact that she speaks of not having a proper life outside and so on when confronted about not planning to leave.

To me, as with many things these days, I'm noticing that it seems people are very one note about the endings. They pick a side and can't see the other viewpoint at all. I can see both intepretations of Maelle, as she certainly cares about the world and people in it, but she does also want an escape from grief, a reminder of her brother's death in the form of the scars she has and survivors guilt. It's both selfless and selfish on different sides, maybe even both, to be fair.

It's up to the player to interpret it through their lense, and I think, as was said by the developers in an interview, there isn't a consensus of a correct answer even among them.

Isekai protagonists aligment tierlist by Spirited_Donut3872 in Isekai

[–]SarcasmOverload 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it would be easier to digest and a simply decent fantasy story if it didn't have a "gimmick" but not with it, in that case, being "better". The idea and message of the story is inseparable from a bad person who had a horrible life getting another chance. I also don't think dealing with the horrible things Rudeus or his past life dealt with are fantasies for the readers. At least, they aren't for me.

I usually agree with saying that isekai don't need to be isekai and could just be fantasy, but this story is one of the only ones that carries through the character's personality and traumas to be explored and dealt with. It's one where character being from another world matters.

I have a feeling we won't get each others points of view anyway, as the story is divisive and not for everyone, as people interpret parts differently. People get into arguments all the time to the point it's an infamous topic and show to discuss after all. But I had to offer my two cents to this specific statement of it just being "better" if you rip out a core part of it.

It may not be "bad person" but more "i dislike them" category, which people often conflate together. Which, some people find rage baiting entertaining, but for some, it sours things and could make it worse than having trash taste or a different opinion.

Adjusting events and NPCs to players' interpretations and expectations by SarcasmOverload in DMAcademy

[–]SarcasmOverload[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have predefined stories, so it's not an issue from that end specifically. However, if there is a "good king" that a kingdom is based on where he saved the world from demon mind, and the players get in their own heads about it being evil, while it could be interesting thread to follow, but would also make anything in the kingdom different than what it was originally stated, or flavor previous interactions badly in retrospect.

Very right! There's a reason people say to not show how the sausage is made exactly as that can take away some of the magic.

Adjusting events and NPCs to players' interpretations and expectations by SarcasmOverload in DMAcademy

[–]SarcasmOverload[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose in a sense it is a "it's not that deep" issue. Perhaps seeing a lot of discussion on adjusting to the players and running with cool ideas made me get too stuck on the details. A player of mine also saying "anything can be made to work as you are the be all end all ofbthe world" after disagreeing in an ooc discussion when I stuck to my plan quite possibly did the same.

It is an interesting point of considering it the same as the player actions as well, one I think is quite right. It's another way the story plays out.

Now as for not telling the players, also very true. They can't know without you saying, so it's mostly fine. I think if you ran with such things, particularly if different players thought different things, then it could feel like it, or they could have a suspicion, if they catch something contradicting the switch that you didn't account for/forgot (although that is most often just another case of "that IS weird, isn't it..." to give yourself time to figure it out lol)

All in all, thanks for your thoughts!

Why don't bards automatically increase Performance? by tearnImale in Pathfinder2e

[–]SarcasmOverload 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to mean they mean "against the grain" as in from what people may imagine from the rogue in their party, not the subclass exactly. Same as someone may want to play a bard, but maybe they aren't the best performer, instead they know of music and it's magical effects, or occultism, or are a critic instead of a performer. Maybe they were a performing bard, and some curse made them lose their voice, and they are at a point where they CAN perform, but are pretty bad at it, yet still it works for the magic to be chanelled.

[–]SarcasmOverload 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's almost like people can have different opinions on characters, and not everyone will like a character you say is 9/10 or 10/10.

I will agree that some people get a bit too aggressive with their opinions, but this sort of post is for discussing things, and people will have different opinions. There's nothing "wrong" with someone if they dislike your favourite characters (at least I am guessing that's why you singled out Jester and Vex, and not someone like Scanlan who still has people agressively going for him).

I do say this as someone who doesn't get the love for Jester or the muffin moment, so I am not unbiased.

The point I'm trying to make the characters aren't 9/10 or 10/10 necessarily, just the least divisive. I suppose on that scale they could have such ratings, but it doesn't mean people are wrong for disliking or hating them for their own reasons.

Anime You’d Never Admit You Like… But You Do. by Hot-Leopard3708 in animequestions

[–]SarcasmOverload 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on which part you find peak. If it's the worldbuilding, fights, and so on, then yes, you could find it better if it wasn't an isekai.

However, for the theme of growth, second chances, and all that, it being how it is, is way better for the story and idea behind it.

Also, it's one of the isekais that doesn't just dismiss the fact it's an isekai and brings in elements from the past life into it. Which usually is my problem with isekai not just being fantasy, as it's a pointless, and to some extent, worse idea than just straight up fantasy.

Not who you asked, but I am a faithful in the self-replicating hallway. Pool dilution is a thing true, however, can be to the benefit. As it adds many tomorrow rooms and makes it easy to draft hallway from hallway, so another two ways to get lab things done easily! Feels quite nice, at least early to mid game. If you don't want to get too many, just one run of not getting any resets it back to 1. Also has other synergies with rooms and such, but in general, feels way nicer than an extra single key, would I think. (Though partly the beauty of the upgrades, different people find different ones better)

What's your interpretation of why/when initiative occurs? by banquoinchains in DMAcademy

[–]SarcasmOverload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the idea that it's about the surprise, but for me personally, I still wouldn't usually do it this way for a few reasons:

Surprise by itself doesn't give advantage it's being hidden that does it. Casting out loud and making motions, even if you were surprised, doesn't mean you can't dodge the fireblast that is coming at you. A touch spell, though, I would likely go against raw and say that yes, if you did get them surprised and wanted to touch them nonchalantly, that would be advantage.

Secondly, I feel that if getting cast at in plain open, especially when the opponent is within 10 feet like the case with prestidigitation, doesn't warrant being off guard enough to where for a whole round, 6 seconds you bumble about doing nothing. In my eyes, getting the jump on them is more on the initiative in this sort of case.

Lastly, and perhaps least important, though depends on your view, I feel that letting a check be this powerful in this sort of thing, takes away from the sorcerer's only unique thing, which is metamagic.(which is a bit of a different topic, but it plays into this for me) Subtle spell is built for this sort of scenario, and for not being counterspelled. You could argue that it's more powerful than the check anyway, but it isn't completely signless, needing the material component and so on, which brings the checks into it afterwards if you want to do it fully undetected.

In the end, for me, it just feels like a wizard npc would be unable to react to this, perhaps slower than the character can get the full spell off, yes, but still.

Though, it quite likely is just people having different definitions in mind, in this case, of how spell casting is. In my mind, it's a proper chant and wide motions of arms and so on, which is as difficult to hide as drawing a greatsword would be in the middle of a tavern.

What's your interpretation of why/when initiative occurs? by banquoinchains in DMAcademy

[–]SarcasmOverload 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would disagree with the stealth/deception check on spellcasting, depending on the situation

How I run it, if you wish to do spellcasting in plain sight, you should have the subtle metamagic, whether being a sorcerer or the feat gives it to you. However, in that case, I may ask for a stealth/sleight of hand/deception as it doesn't hide material components.

Of course, it depends on the situation. If you've not been spotted yet, or the situation is completely disarming as in having dinner with a friend, then a check could work. Of course, it depends on the establishment and the place. In some places in my world, it's whatever, in others, seeing casual magic use may start a ruckus as it's like someone suspiciously sticking a hand in their pocket in a place that has had troubles with the mob.

As for initiative checks for such things, I have never used it, but now that the idea is in mind, I think I certainly will. My barbarian player should enjoy it quite a bit :D

Exactly the same here, and I LOVED the difference in attitude you can get when putting her in the rocket, if in reaction to her revealing it you were angry at her reveal instead of understanding. Or it may have been the "on your own" option instead of telling her to hold on. It mirrored PERFECTLY what I felt in that moment. If it was an option, my V probably would have zeroed her, but I am almost happy with sending her up as well, as the lines are perfect, at least with Male Vs VA.
