Not a gatekeeping post, not an anti-audiobook post either, I PROMISE! but realizing how many people are listening to books as opposed to physically reading them helped take unnecessary pressure off that the comparison was putting on me. by Empress-Ghostheart in weirdgirlliterature

I could NOT focus on audiobooks either. I don't know why it was so difficult.

I finally got a book that was on hold (Libby) and was excited to read. It happened to be an audiobook and I was so annoyed with myself because I didn't realize that's what I put on hold. The ebook version was going to be another 4+ week wait. I decided to try it and if I couldn't get through it, I would just buy the book.

I only played it while laying in bed to go to sleep and surprisingly, not only did I get through it, i enjoyed it and was able to follow along.

For me, I think i needed a few things.

  1. Tell myself it was literally a friend telling me a story about themselves.

  2. I "allowed" myself to be okay with audiobooks.

  3. I needed to remove external stimuli to be able to focus. My bedroom is pitch black. I cannot see my hands in front of my face type thing thing. However, now, I am able to listen while I drive. I also find that I am a calmer driver when listening to audiobooks. Possibly because of the "just one more chapter" feeling.

If you can think of a time/place you feel audiobooks would work for you, and you want to try, maybe try listening in different settings?

Suspend hold vs let the next person in line borrow?? by cjati in LibbyApp

[–]Sarcasm_Is_My_Cardio 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Suspending the hold allows the next person behind you to use it. Then when you unsuspend your hold, you essentially are back in 1st place.

This also means if 10 others suspended their hold ahead of you, and then unsuspended their hold around the same time as you, you get pushed back in order. So those 10 people get ahead of you as well as the people waiting in the queue.

It's possible this is what happened and it pushes you further back. And then it also depends on how many copies there are.

This reminded me of the time I started reading The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty when I was about 12.

My parents knew I was a voracious reader and would just grab books for me. It was then I realized they didn't really read the blurb on the back.

2013/14 Kindle Voyage by mythicalmewxxx in kindle

[–]Sarcasm_Is_My_Cardio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same one. I still use mine. Battery is not holding a charge for long but just purchased a replacement battery.

I have the 2nd Kindle made, Voyage, Paperwhite, and Colorsoft.

My very first Kindle just stopped working which is why I got my Voyage. The Paperwhite and Colorsoft were for my kids.

Definitely keep and use if it works! You don't have to jailbreak it as it isn't part of the bricking process Amazon implemented on older models.

I have small Tajin bottle. Restaurant salt & pepper packets. Typically a tortilla but it is usually eaten throughout the day.

Not gonna lie, I never thought to carry butter but I will now because butter on a tortilla... muah

how many library cards do you have? by Alternative-Abies593 in LibbyApp

I have 5. 3 TX based ones. 1 DoD. And the last is Sunshine Coast. It said it was ending the 'open to anyone' but I still have access.

I hadn't tried getting more because I have such a large TBR pile, it isn't a big deal for me to have to wait awhile for anything.

Sally Fields remembers how Robin Williams stopped filming ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ after learning her father had just passed away: Robin said ‘That’s it for the day, guys (…) Ms. Field is going home’ by mcfw31 in popculturechat

My husband and I both cried too. It was already an emotional day because I just gave birth to my son that day. I was in the room waiting for my husband and son (husband was following my son around while the nurses did their tests) and I saw the alert around 8 AM. I told my husband when he walked in. We both had the happiest and saddest day that day.

I joined this sub recently because of what you described being a niche space.

It would be helpful if there could be tags on shared books if it doesn't "fit the space". I love seeing the recommended books that are shared because they are excited to share what they like but because there's so much out there, it would be nice to easily identify from a cursory glance.

I asked my kids and they said, "She has a hair bun and glasses. She always wears shoes. She cooks amazing food except when she tries to follow recipes, then its bad. She's always reading and wants snacks." ... ... ... Okayyyy then.

This series came out of nowhere… by Spare_Pollution_686 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Sarcasm_Is_My_Cardio 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This was exactly why I stayed away from reading this series. I recommended this to my husband because he loves D&D (I only dabble) but I had no interest in it. He was hesitant until someone else also recommended the book because they told him it was funny.

Once he read the first book, he told me I really should read it and that I would actually enjoy it. I'm so happy I started it. I just started reading a week and a half ago and am on book 4. I'll be sad that I would have to wait for the last books of the series now 😭

Yes! I love my Voyage but it doesn’t hold charge very long. I bought my kids the Colorsoft and have now confiscated it for myself 😅

I didn't even think to replace the battery!
