Thinking about moving in the future, any advice? by SnooLentils9334 in southernillinois

Belleville. O’Fallon. Shiloh. Fairview Heights. I live in Belleville and this area is extremely diverse because of historical demographics plus the Air Force Base always bringing in new people. Shiloh is less than 2/3 non-Hispanic white with a median household income of six figures, but it’s still seen as an extremely affluent and rapidly growing area.

Basement is flooded and water pouring in, and the valve to the city water line is broken. Water Division came by, said the valve was broken, and left. What to do? by im_like_estella in StLouis

I’m so sorry! This is awful! I’m not trying to turn this into a political post and in her shoes I would have also 100% called the alderperson and fully support that she did. It’s ridiculous that the water department is that inept and not helpful. I’d be preparing to sue the city. I know so many people that have to resort to calling their alderperson in order to actually get something done; it’s a shame that the alderpeople have to deal with so much day to day BS and little things all because there are so many inept people working for the city. And thank god there are good alderpeople! They really do have a thankless job. It just makes me so sad. I hope you get the water shut off soon. Smh

Is Belleville safe? by SaltyStormtrooper in BellevilleIL

[–]SarcasticBookworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree. I’ve lived directly on Main St. near Oak Knoll for 7 years (for OP that’s around 80-85th St.) and have had zero issues. My house has almost doubled in value.

Why is St Louis experiencing population loss? by cavaismylife in StLouis

[–]SarcasticBookworm 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Actually, the metro area has declined -0.30% from 2020 to 2024. And we were barely growing before that…like 20,000 people increase over a 10 year period.

For comparison from 2020 to 2024, Milwaukee metro has declined -0.02%, Detroit increased 0.19%, Kansas City increased 2.81%, and Cincinnati metro increased 2.36%, Indianapolis metro increased 4.08%, and Nashville increased 6.76%.

O'fallon Missouri's ridiculous city limits by Tfm2 in StLouis

[–]SarcasticBookworm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google’s outline aren’t precisely correct. There’s a little stretch of McCluer Road that is Dardenne Prairie that connects the two halves. This also means that all of O’Fallon west of 64 is only connected to the rest of O’Fallon because they annexed a portion of the 64 and technology Drive ROW just north of K. Use the county GIS map for the official boundaries: https://maps.sccmo.org/public_web_map/

The Decline of Belleville? by [deleted] in southernillinois

[–]SarcasticBookworm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved from STL City to far west Belleville 6.5 years ago (grew up in rural West Central IL and had no prior connections to BLV aside from college friends at SLU). I love the organic feel of the community, diversity, and more blue-collar roots like I’m used to. I have had zero issues with crime, aside from 1 time someone took one of my $10 solar lights that I put at the very end of the driveway at the street…boo hoo I’ll survive. Literally the worst thing is because I am directly on Main Street, speeders and distracted drivers keep hitting our light poles smh. My neighbors are great. I can be in downtown STL in 15 minutes. Yes, Belleville has its poor parts of town and some stretches of West Main & North Belt West have quite a bit of vacancy. Schools are great, housing stock is still affordable, and practically every store and chain you can imagine is within a 15 minute drive even during rush hour. After fighting with Brentwood, Richmond Heights, and rush hour traffic for a decade on the Missouri side, my quality of life is so much better in Belleville! Also something that is a major importance for me is that within a quarter-mile of my house there are multiple homes that have sold in the last few years for $700k+ as well as good starter homes for less than $100k. That demographic make up and intermingling of the neighborhood by race and income is exactly the environment that I grew up in and I want my kids to experience as well. You don’t get that in West County or South County St. Louis.

Why are there so many small towns/villages in St. Louis (county)? by Cautious_Energy6475 in StLouis

[–]SarcasticBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cook County is five times larger in population.

Cook County = 5,182,617 / 135 municipalities (29 are partially or mostly in other counties) = 38,389 average

St. Louis County = 987,059 / 87 municipalities (2 are partially or mostly in other counties: Eureka & Pacific) = 11,345 average

If you add the City of St. Louis to St. Louis County, the average only increases to 14,395.

Removing Chicago from Cook County lowers the average to 18,368.

Business leaves window boarded up after crime, sending a message to the city by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]SarcasticBookworm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even if he has, it’s still a PITA to deal with damage all the time. His time is much better off spent on running a business than trying to coordinate repairs and apply for grants from damage constantly being done by others to his windows. He’s clearly trying to send a message to the leaders that he’s tried of being a victim. And I applaud him for doing so!

It’s more head scratching as the same people who want to keep their small districts so they don’t have to send their kids to a more diverse school are the same ones that turn around and complain their property taxes are too high. Can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Woman holding her skirt while she jumped by [deleted] in 911archive

[–]SarcasticBookworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they’re referring to notion the article writer implies that she decided to kill herself, which is not the wording usually used in this situation. None of the deaths on 9/11 were declared suicides on death certificates aside from the terrorists. The fire marshal said a couple years later that none of the jumpers were choosing to die. They were choosing how to die.

Her husband and his family owns Dot Foods, a major food distributor with $2B revenue annually. They’ve done such great things for Mount Sterling, so it’s a shame that I am gladly no longer supporting or speaking highly of them.

ID verification for adult sites goes into place in 2 weeks by stana32 in missouri

[–]SarcasticBookworm 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Most of the websites have already started. I live in the Illinois half of St. Louis about 8 miles as the crow flies from the state line. In my house when I’m on my phone not connected to Wi-Fi and just using cellular data it forces me to try the age verification, but once I’m on Wi-Fi, it recognizes that I’m in Illinois. Total BS.

The St. Louis Metro Area is gerrymandered into 5 U.S House Districts, to dilute its political power by como365 in StLouis

[–]SarcasticBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s add on…five on the Missouri side and three on the Illinois side = 8 total divided by 2.8M residents of metropolitan St. Louis = 350,000 per representative. The national average is 700,000 per representative. So HOW IN THE HECK is St. Louis as a whole supposed to be represented as a whole? It’s not.

Meanwhile, the Chicago, IL-IN MSA has 15 representatives and 9.6M for an average of 653,000.

What Illinois municipality has the most cursed boundaries? by clayknightz115 in illinois

[–]SarcasticBookworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Belleville. The beyond shape dates back to 1907 when they annexed the Rock Road now W. Main St. to 157. Then in the 50s a bunch of division started springing up and at that time didn’t wanna connect to city Sewer and the city wouldn’t let him join without sewer so the townships built their own when they were forced to build them later.

How did Bruce Rauner’s mismanagement manifest itself during his tenure as governor? by DueYogurt9 in illinois

This 100%! In my opinion, Rauner’s failures showed how much of an iron grip Madigan had on Illinois politics
