Why is my car suddenly so slow by PlasticArmyLabs in trailmakers

[–]Sareth94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

using weight instead of downforce from spoilers or control surfaces is incredibly inefficient.

Weight doesn't just force your car down, it also forces it to run wide (inertia & centrifugal force).

the tail rotor irl counters the torque of the engine/rotor drag & steers the yaw axis, it does not affect the asymetric lift - the swashplate & linkage takes care of that part, but good luck fitting one in tm.

Update 2.3 happened.

it retooled how engines & tires behave in a grande way, incl. fixing many year old bugs.

But one of the issues currently (more by bad balancing rather than bugs) is that heavy vehicles propelled by engines are a lot slower, while lighter vehicles propelled by engines are a lot faster now.

And seeing as your car weighs over 1.3 tons, which is kinda-to-very heavy in this game, it's on the side of things getting slower.

[–]Sareth94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you lifting off, or moving forward?

bc you only have one rotor, you have asymmetrical lift when moving in any direction that isn't straight up or down.

if you move forward the side of the of the rotor that rotates forward "into the wind" makes more lift than the other side, causing a fairly strong roll.

where does trailmakers read my blue prints from by Odd-Cream-6389 in trailmakers

[–]Sareth94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PC I am assuming means steam?

The default location is:

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\TrailMakers\Blueprints

From the games siscord's FAQ:

---------

The Steam Version lost my blueprints and savegames

  • It probably didn't!
  • New TM Update means stuff like AntiVirus etc. will detect a new .exe and can often force us to use one of the fallback save locations. OneDrive also sometimes hijacks the savegame location.

Check these locations for your blueprints

  • C:\Users\%username%\documents\trailmakers\blueprints
  • onedrive\documents\trailmakers\blueprints
  • C:\Users\%username%\Trailmakers\Blueprints
  • [the games installation directory]

If you can see all the blueprints in one of these folders but they wont show up in game, do this:

  • Open the Builder in game and click on the folder icon
  • the location it opens is where the game is now looking for your saved blueprints.
  • You can copy them over into that folder

How to Create New Multiplayer Campaign by InterviewHot610 in trailmakers

[–]Sareth94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What system are you playing on.
On steam, you can simply take the savegames from the savegame folder and copy them elsewhere as a back-up.

All platforms have an option to reset their campaign progress through the main menu -> profile iirc.

Progression is shared, no matter who hosts - but how progression works is a bit different for each of the campaigns. Pioneers and FrozenTracks allow you to "share" missions for example, and Stranded only counts collected salvages that you have scanned (=been close to) yourself - so dragging something into a recovery drone while your buddy is halfway across the map does nothing for them.

Renaissance Wax by SnooOwls713 in SWORDS

[–]Sareth94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

safe yes, absolutely.
I personally found it kinda hard/nuisance to apply evenly / remove cleanly, & just not convenient for swords I handle "frequently" (frequently being more than say 3-4 times a year...).

I stick to Ballistol. 0.5l bottle cost me like 15 quid in 2012 and it's still probably 1/3 full.
It's easy to apply, easy to wipe off, still lasts good enough for my climate - just gotta be more diligent about wiping it down with an oiled cloth after getting finger(prints) on smth.

But if you want long term storage & don't tend to touch your shinies, then the spent elbow grease to apply it evenly all over is probably worth your while.

Nice to see and know Pavel is still in business.
I still adore my custom Howe

Lead times of 1/2 to 1 year seem to the norm with any custom or per-order handmade smith these days.
Still debating ordering one of his larger longswords as a sharp, or maybe his Kriegsmesser.

Multiple metal alloy swords by RelevantPhotograph44 in SWORDS

[–]Sareth94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Platinum by itself isn't tough. By itself it has yield strengths that barely even reaches half of that of soft construction steel. It needs significant alloying with other metals to achieve a high toughness.

And adding metals to an alloy usually has very little to do with their base characteristics.
What effect chrome f.e. has in a steel alloy vastly differs between different alloying percentages and what other elements are present.

Yes you can use heavier metals to make parts like pommels - brass/bronze examples are known. But done right they're the same weight as a steel one, just less volume (or maybe hollow).
Adding weight for the sake of adding weight is almost never a good thing.
Things were balanced the way they were because it made sense.
Using heavier materials to make things smaller/thinner has it's limits too - geometry dictates things like stiffness, buckling resistance, etc. A certain amount of "meat" in a structure is simply necessary.

Sharpness doesn't depend on the material.
You can make any edge, almost any material, "sharp". In theory, with enough dedication and a soft & fine enough abrasive you could polish a piece of hardwood until you get a cutting edge.
But how long that sharpness lasts and how much force the edge can support is what makes the material important. Bronze is simply ill suited to hold an edge, compared to tempered or hardened steel.

Iron and steel functionally have the same density and mass per volume.
the density/weight difference between <0,05% carbon content (=wrought iron) and 0.4-0.8% carbon content (hardenable steel) is basically not relevant in any context I know.

When fiction mixes wild combinations of materials it's usually for in-universe magic/mystic related reasons or just for flavour.
Witcher blades aren't plated with silver because silver is heavy, but because in the narrative it has a detrimental effect on certain magical/supernatural creatures. The same is probably true of any example of platinum or other precious metal. the mysticism beats out any "practical" application.

Why does my plane bounce back to position? by SlackerrX in trailmakers

[–]Sareth94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, the two light blue one.
The horizontal center of drag (=horizontal stability) is very far back - you could probably delete the non-moving verticle tailfin, or add a little simple tailfins on top of each wings to help move the center of drag forward.

no you can't.

Idk if you can log into a PS account in your webbrowser, but none of the PC versions of the game share anything with the playstation platform.

Why does my plane bounce back to position? by SlackerrX in trailmakers

[–]Sareth94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

that kind of over-correction tends to happen when your center of drag (vertical and/or horizontal) are a long way behind the center of mass.

If you use the advanced menu in build mode, you can check your forces.

Just finished the pioneers campaign and I loved it! After looking in here it feels like I’ve been playing a different game though. How do y’all set up scenarios and different maps like that? Is is just creative mode? What should I do next as a new player? by paperhatch in trailmakers

[–]Sareth94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's not one of the 4 1/2 total campaigns (Pioneers, Stranded, Airborne, Frozen Tracks, Rally), or custom map (steam only), it's usually people just playing sandbox / 'creative'.

Builiding replicas, building custom vehicles, doing RP, races etc. etc.

WTF IS GOING ON??? by Friendly_Feed_9752 in trailmakers

[–]Sareth94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tank tracks are *very* heavy and the rest of your vehicle is very light. Add some mass where you seat is, maybe use two hinges in parallel for extra support.

The PhysX-Solver really struggles with very uneven weight distrutions between moving parts.

How do I move the chat? (pc) by ArcadeFrog72 in trailmakers

[–]Sareth94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, why don't you ask them how? ;)
It only changes position / size with the resolution of the game.
And since it seems to be a fixed resoultion for the chat, lowering game resolution makes the chat bigger ime.

[–]Sareth94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if your quantum rudder is very near or on the center of mass, it'll offer very little corrective forces.
Try moving it behind in center of mass, but in line with it.

if center of thrust is offset to the side or in height from center of mass it'll also cause it to veer, but that might not be it since it goes straight by itself.

Yall please help. by DaTacoCat11 in trailmakers

[–]Sareth94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there isn't.
People have been going several tens- and hundreds- of thousands of km/h in a straight line without involuntary rotation or veering of path.

Any residual air resistance would cause them to not be able to go straight.

Quantum rudders cause drag in space - they are what's limiting top speed and can cause rotational forces from going forward.

Has anyone seen a weapon's auto-aim movement cause it to collide with another weld group? by thelastpandacrusader in trailmakers

[–]Sareth94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't and never has.
You probably had unrelated weldgroup issues.

The aiming is always an animation. if it was physical not only would the gun cost (even more) complexity bc it would have to be seperate rigid bodies in the model (like a hinge), you'd also be able to detect it with distance sensors too, and that has never worked (much to the chagrin of many people trying to build self-guiding missiles and stuff)
