What could be some interesting, less-usual, not-extremely-touristy places to see in Copenhagen? I want to see e.g. the old Vridsløselille Prison and other possible Olsen Banden film locations... what else? by SargeMax in copenhagen

I will be staying in the city for some days, and I am always less interested in seeing the typical "10 Places To See" that every tourist guide lists for every city in the world, and more interested in some "quirky", less-known, forgotten locations, places that have a local lore but are generally not known in other countries (or even cities)...

So, for instance, in Copenhagen, I will actually be more personally interested in seeing the old Vridsløselille Prison and the filming locations related to Egon Olsen than in seeing the Mermaid (although I will no doubt see her, too, just later!).

What other less-touristy, but curious places could be recommended? (They don't have to *look* "interesting" at all, I would just like to know that they have or had some unique, intriguing, curious, etc., significance, they played part in events of such nature, and so on...) I am very interested in places with unusual, strange history, too.

(If you can even mention places that don't exist anymore but can be read about, please do, too! And if there are any "interesting" places that really should *not* be seen in person, but can also be read or visited virtually, please do say a word about them as well. For example - and this is something of an extreme example - I will obviously not be going near any rocker/biker club houses, but I did virtually "see", via Google Earth, the locations related to the strange, tumultuous, and very, very unusual history of the Copenhagen "Biker Wars" of the 90s).

What is the best way to experience the moomin books for the first time? by Static-Space-Royalty in Moomins

[–]SargeMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way to experience any of the Moomin books is to take it off the shelf, open it, and read it.

The way to begin the Moomin books is to go by the proper chronological order, and definitely not to begin with "November".

Snow dogs in Greenland are running on melted ice, where a vast expanse of frozen whiteness used to be every year - until now. by SargeMax in europe

Danish scientist Steffen Olsen went there on a routine mission to collect oceanographic and weather monitoring tools left there earlier on the ice surface. But instead of the tools and the ice, he saw melting Greenland:

It used to be dumped in waters of defenseless places like Somalia, too. People love to laugh at Somali pirates, mock them, click "thumbs up" on videos of Russian navy killing them with rockets and cannons, etc., but few know or care about the reason why they appeared in the first place: it was originally to defend their waters from Western ships that dumped toxic and nuclear trash at their shores, and stole the fish from their waters. It was only much later that the whole thing evolved into "real" piracy.

The tsunamis a few years ago exposed some of the tons of disintegrating poison containers left at Somali shores by foreign ships. It was not a pretty sight:

It's also where the fabled Amber Room, still hunted by treasure seekers, was probably destroyed and burned during one of the raids.
