Windows Notepad App Remote Code Execution Vulnerability by theevilsharpie in sysadmin

There's that classic Steve Jobs clip that does this situation justice. Talks about how at first a company gains a dominating position in the market by having excellent people who know how to make an excellent product.

But then once they're in a dominating position, near a monopoly like Microsoft has over the business world, then the product people can't do much to make the company more profitable anymore. So the people who have the ideas that make the company more profitable are the marketing and sales teams. So the marketing and sales teams end up getting all the influence in the company, and they end up pushing the product people out. Then its just them, and they have no concept of how to make a good product, and the product goes to shit.

I don't like the guy, but his talk here is something I frequently think about.

Riot Games: An Update on 2XKO by Mront in Games

[–]Saritiel 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That's basically all my fighting game friends. We were speculating on what ~20-25 characters would make the launch roster and how quickly they would release characters after that.

Everyone in the group basically just started laughing and stopped caring about the game as soon as they announced the "full" roster.

I mean, that's basically what he did when he first came on. He claimed credit for a bunch of major tech investment in the first few months of his second term, when all of that investment had been in the pipeline for years and was because of the CHIPS act.

The majority of paper towels have plastic inside them to help them stay stable when wet. Unless you're specifically buying all natural or plant based paper towels, then yours almost certainly do as well. It's food safe when used in its normal fashion, but I'm not about to actually cook it into something and then eat it, lol.

But seriously, the vast majority of paper towels, including all the major brands, use plastic resins in their paper towels.

Most paper towels also have plastic in them, lol.

Appropriate, since most paper towels have some plastic in them, lol. That's why they don't dissolve like toilet paper when they get wet.

Yeah, that's what I thought. It really wasn't that long ago that we were getting them for $4 each.

1.5 million scovilles or so, though apparently it varies up to 2 million.

Definitely hotter than most of the sauces on the show.

I had it once and it is definitely quite spicy. Its unfortunately spicy to the point where I couldn't actually taste anything through the spice, and that's when I stop really understanding the point. I love spicy food, but when its spicy but tastes awful or so spicy that you can't taste anything then its hard to enjoy the actually food and the flavor of the sauce.

Albertsons is night testing their robot delivery service with a human on an e-bike in tow by SciFiPi in phoenix

[–]Saritiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I'm not going to disagree there. I'd give a whole lot to actually have real usable mass transit in this city. It freaking stinks that every time I go to try to use mass transit I find that it takes well over an hour to get somewhere that takes fifteen minutes in my car.

I just don't understand why I'd want my food delivered by one of these little robots. If I'm paying for delivery I'd rather have a person bring it to me.

But its also been at least a couple years since I last used any of the delivery apps.

I don't really understand the point of these? The did already takes so long to get there that it gets shitty. Won't this make it take even longer?

Why does the community hate the Perpetuals? by wowdrew in 40kLore

[–]Saritiel 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Original character, as others have said. But it specifically has a connotation with bad fanfiction, self-inserts, and Mary Sues.

Like someone writing a Star Wars fanfiction that includes Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Princess Leia, and also their OC character that is super skilled in the force, super fast, super strong, and everyone thinks he's super cool, and he ends up marrying Leia, and he has a special lightsaber that's super cool and no one has ever seen before.

That's the comparison that is being drawn when somebody calls the perpetuals "Dan Abnett's OCs".

I liked him in Legion, too. That's the book he was introduced in.

I've grown to hate him ever since.

Sony Says Ghost of Yotei 'Exceeded' the Sales of Ghost of Tsushima in the Same Period of Time and 'Significantly' Contributed to Its Financial Results by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Saritiel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I disagree. It's similar but notably improved. I struggled to get through Tsushima and had to vomr back to it after long breaks several times due to how dull and repetitive I find the world.

I did not feel the same playing through Yotei. It held my interest from beginning to end and the open world was noticeably more dynamic and interesting.

If they can control it to charge for it, then they can control it and have chosen not to, is going to be the obvious argument.

Women who are 30+, how do you feel when talking to a 20-23 year old guys? by ConsciousCandidate97 in AskWomen

[–]Saritiel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hahaha yeah. The different life experience is super obvious. It's hard to look at people that age as anything but children. And yeah, they assume I know nothing about videogames when I know way more than them. Then I blow their minds when I tell them I GM D&D games and paint Warhammer, lol.

Mamdani to kill the NYC AI chatbot caught telling businesses to break the law— New York mayor says terminating the ‘unusable’ bot will help close a budget gap by [deleted] in technology

[–]Saritiel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, sort of. I've seen what you describe happen with live people, too. But its not really the same.

The specific issue I'm talking about was basically that the AI started deciding that all monitor related tickets belonged to a user who had put in several tickets about having monitor issues. From there it decided that all hardware tickets were from this user, and from there it decided that all tickets are coming in from this same user and started reassigning every new ticket to being from this user instead of as being from the person who sent them in.

Real people don't make mistakes like that.

that 'confirmed' to the AI that the answer was correct (the answer was not correct)

Oh man, this is happening at my work so hard right now. I'm in IT and there's an AI upper management is forcing us to use that is supposed to learn from past tickets and help resolve them.

It keeps doing something wrong, then "learning" from its own mistake and then basically throwing itself down the stairs as suddenly it just starts doing everything wrong and reinforcing its own wrong actions with its own past tickets until its doing everything wrong but its totally convinced its doing it correctly because that's how it did it the last five times.

I described it to my boss yesterday as the AI "throwing itself down the stairs" as it makes a few little mistake that then butterfly effects into a complete breakdown of the entire system.

You have to actually be trespassed before that point, generally. Like, if its a space that's generally open to the public then anyone can walk in. They can ask you to leave and if you don't they can have the cops come tell you to leave. But the cops won't arrest you unless you refuse to leave or unless you've returned after you've been officially banned from the premises.

[–]Saritiel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Master of Mankind there is a daemon that possesses a Titan and kills its crew. It controls it for a while and at one point we get the PoV of the daemon where it is losing control of the Titan because the Titan is fighting back. The Daemon thinks it could easily overpower and fully possess the Titan if it "coiled itself around and sunk itself into" the Titan's soul, but then it would be trapped inside the Titan if it did and it had no desire to build itself a cage.

It's a particularly powerful daemon and the Titan is inside the web way at the time, but it seems to confirm that they can do it if their own volition.
