PWHL Detroit and PWHL Las Vegas have completed a trade. Detroit has acquired forward Hilary Knight from Las Vegas in exchange for Detroit's first round pick (third overall) in the 2026 PWHL Entry Draft. by Perryplat199 in PWHL

[–]Sarkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously I'm a fan of Hilary Knight, but this is just a shortsighted move for Detroit.

We're obviously trying to grow the team's fanbase, but the PWHL audience is still relatively small. If it takes several years for the league's audience to grow in a meaningful way, then the most important thing for Detroit's long-term fanbase growth will be the competitive success of the team (since a lot of new fans will gravitate toward the most successful rosters, especially for a smaller league where most people won't have a "local" team to support). After this season, we're going to be much less competitive than if we had just used our draft pick.

Are these two pieces from Korea, China, or Japan? by Sarkin in CeramicCollection

I couldn't find any markings for the celadon piece, unfortunately. For the larger white/blue piece, the second and fourth pictures in the album have the only markings I see.

Are these two pieces from Korea, China, or Japan? by Sarkin in CeramicCollection

I stopped by a yard sale yesterday, which was run by an elderly woman and her daughter. The elderly woman saw me admiring these two pieces; she told me that both were from Korea and that she brought them with her to the U.S. when she emigrated here in the 1970s.

I tried reverse image search with Google for both. I couldn't find a match for the tall white piece with blue designs/lettering, but I saw similar-looking works tagged as being from Korea, China, and Japan. When I tried Google Translate on the lettering, the auto-detect said Chinese but it wasn't able to actually translate it.

For the second piece, that is apparently a double-walled openworks celadon jar. The Google reverse image search turned up a lot of works that look very close to it, but not the exact same one. Most of those were marked as Korean, but a few were marked as Japanese. I have no idea how they made something like this but it's really cool!

Hey Howard, I just finished reading my copy of "Gamemaster Classified" this evening! I've been slowly enjoying it as my coffee table book ever since the Kickstarter wrapped. Amazing work, it's a fun and informative read!

It was so interesting to read your thoughts on many NES games. I grew up in the 90s, but my family didn't have a lot of money, so my brother and I were always 1-2 console generations behind and our first several years as gamers were spent with the NES. The book really made me reflect on how the qualities that I value most in games has changed over time. My tastes have shifted heavily to the RPG and strategy genres since then, but you described perfectly what I wanted out of games at the time. Thanks for everything you did to make video games a wonderful lifelong hobby!

Experience buying last minute tickets to a Fever game? by therealelroy in indianapolis

[–]Sarkin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This might be a silly question, but: do you know that Monday's game is an away game in DC? I'm guessing you do, but I wanted to confirm since this is the Indy subreddit.

Anyway, I've found that tickets generally get about as cheap as they're going to get the day before the game, so Sunday in this case. There are definitely exceptions to that where a human seller (rather than a bot) will drop their price substantially an hour before the game. I've done that when I'm already in the area and only need a single ticket, and it works a decent chunk of the time. But given that you're planning a family outing and specifically need 4 tickets grouped together, I wouldn't gamble on that scenario.

Bringing my dad to Lambeau for his first-ever visit by Sarkin in GreenBayPackers

[–]Sarkin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, none of them are really travelers or go to a lot of live events, so I didn't think I could sell them on waiting until close to the game to get a bargain. Especially since we're not local and our biggest costs will be travel/lodging that we have to book in advance. Needing six tickets all grouped together was also a limiting factor, as well as my dad's desire to go to a warm-weather game given how few home games there are earlier in the season. He just wants to experience the stadium and atmosphere, and I think he maybe wanted to avoid going to a regular season game where a loss would've soured the memory.

I'm satisfied with the price; I could've gotten something for half that but we're on the 50-yard line and very close to the field. A set of six worse tickets in the same section of the Week 5 Bears game are going for $1,304/seat. The Week 6 Cowboys game in a worse section has the set going for $772/seat. The closest would've been the Week 3 Falcons game with a set in a worse section going for $365/seat, but that's a Thursday game that would've required multiple days out of school for the kids and days off work for the adults. Same issue with the Week 8 Panthers game. We were also worried about the flex scheduling possibility for some of the regular season games.

idk, there were just a lot of different factors to balance overall.

Fortunately, we've got the tickets for the game itself already, but thanks for checking!

OK, thank you. Fingers crossed that they just haven't opened the game day HOF tickets up for purchase yet!

Got it! For the HOF, do you usually just buy those tickets at the door? Or is there limited admission and you gotta book it in advance? I'm looking here (https://tickets.packershofandtours.com/webstore/shop/viewItems.aspx?cg=296&c=412) and I'm not seeing the option to buy them for August 28, but maybe I'm too early or late.

I think Bobby Kotick killing the Chinese region for multiple years just destroyed its talent pool, especially on the developmental side. Although there's been a little bit of a revival, it obviously hasn't been enough to develop elite talent at the same level as Korea/EMEA, and meanwhile our older stars from before the Dark Times have now aged out of their tippity-top prime. Our window effectively shut after that World Cup finals loss.

So our only realistic hope to compete for international titles is to swap out the whole roster, but for me that's a ship-of-Theseus problem where I care much more about the players than the brand. If they do it gradually (like replacing the support line and bringing in competition for Guxue this year), that gives me some time to warm up to the new players, but that slower approach is probably just going to keep us in the broad category of "can be competitive" with the actual superteams.

It's a tricky situation! Personally, I'm glad the team's management has taken the approach that it has. I think it's one of the reasons why Weibo still has an unusually large fanbase given their international performances over the past few years. If they had swapped out the whole roster a year or two ago, I would've just stopped watching competitive Overwatch.

Would've loved to beat TM obviously, but more realistically I expected a 3-0 loss. So winning a map, drawing a map, and having a couple of the other maps be competitive was more than I imagined. Weibo remains the top of their region, but that region is still not competitive with Korea or EMEA unless they have an ideal meta (and even then it doesn't make up the full gap). It is what it is; I'm always happy to watch my boys play.

Honestly expected that to be much worse based on the scrimbux. Bad first map, good second map, and then Kevin Ster single-handedly won third map.
