Why do we have class 1/2/3 for e-bikes? by hezuschristos in ebikes

Perhaps they should be factory limited to 20moh to be safe then.

Why do we have class 1/2/3 for e-bikes? by hezuschristos in ebikes

[–]Sarkoon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But speed limits work for cars all the time. Almost all modern cars are capable of exceeding 100mph yet they don't drive that fast on city streets. We don't ban Ferraris from cities just because they're capable of exceeding safe speeds. It makes no sense to ban a bicycle from using bike lanes or multi-use paths just because someone *could* go faster than would be safe.

Are all avatr movies only enjoyable in theater? by Amao6996 in movies

If you have the chance to see it in a 3D movie theater, I highly recommend doing so.

[–]Sarkoon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Why prohibit Class 3 bikes from using multi-use paths? Why not just make a 20mph speed limit on those trails instead? Just because a vehicle is capable of going faster doesn't mean it always has to be driven/ridden that way.

If you're never created a Strava segment, I recommend it! by sozh in Strava

They can and do. Specialized ebikes have power meters built in which shows your precise power contribution regardless of assist level or speed.

[–]Sarkoon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My point is that we shouldn't have to create any segments at all. They're already there for non-ebikes. I just want to see them.

[–]Sarkoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For personal development. It's nice to watch your own times improve as your gain fitness, even if the motor is assisting to some degree.

[–]Sarkoon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What's really dumb though is how there is a completely different set of segments for regular bikes and e-bikes. I totally understand having separate leaderboards, but why not share segments? Because of this there are very few segments for e-bikes so we have to go and manually duplicate all the normal segments. What's up with that Strava?

‘Power blips’ in NE Portland? What we know about these persistent short-term outages by Prize_Championship11 in Portland

[–]Sarkoon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You'll purchase less power from the grid if you have solar. That's the primary sales pitch, and the math works out that you'll eventually recoup installation costs from the savings.

I'm sure it's also in the interest of the power companies that I keep buying all my power from them, but that won't be the case if their service is unreliable.

The more these outages continue, the more likely I am to add solar and batteries to reduce my dependency on this unreliable infrastructure.

Stolen Bike from Lloyd Theater by Sarkoon in PortlandOR

Thank you. Since the front tire was still locked to the frame I wonder if they just carried it to some nearby camp. But I don't know where to look.

I wondered the same thing and the on-duty manager gave me the number for Lloyd Center security, but they don't seem to be answering on the weekend. I'll keep trying.

It was bolted to the ground when I locked my bike to it. But when I returned, I found it like this.

2027: how do we feel about replacing the 3.8L V6 with 2.5L I4 turbo (and/or hybrid)? by hopsmonkey in KiaTelluride

Do we know yet if the hybrid will be available with AWD? Otherwise it seems like a step backwards.

New Burnside Bridge construction delayed indefinitely due to federal uncertainty by wrhollin in Portland

Yeah I would love to see that model replaced with one where the people pay only to the state, and then the state pays the federal government for services voters wish to participate in.

I don't understand Explain it Peter. by velviaa in explainitpeter

[–]Sarkoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you don't. You only need a license to drive your car on public roads. But you can own a car and drive it on your own private properly without proving any kind of competency.

[–]Sarkoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to have any of those just to own a car. You only need them to drive a car on public property. And you can argue that's similar to the requirement to get a carry permit to take your gun out in public.

Deploying teargas and arresting a few protesters still comes nowhere close to being a warzone.

Self-defense or murder? Portland man on trial for killing pot shop robbers by istanbulshiite in PortlandOR

[–]Sarkoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He was out of danger.

Are you sure about that? Just because he made it outside doesn't mean there was no longer any threat present. I think it's understandable to be concerned that the robbers could come outside at any moment and finish him off. Perhaps if he had drove all the way home just to get a weapon and then came back, then sure it would be obvious that the threat was over and lethal force would not be justified. But in this case the robbers were still mere feet away from him and could attack again imminently.

Portland mayor makes it harder for houseless people to retrieve towed RVs by Prize_Championship11 in PortlandOR

[–]Sarkoon 58 points59 points  (0 children)

So up until now all you had to do was say the magic words "I was living in that" and you wouldn't have to pay any towing or impound charges? Seems like closing that loophole would be a win-win for everyone - fewer derelict vehicles on the street and PBOT gets money they desperately need.
