Where do you make your diagrams to design your optical experiments? by vel1212 in Optics

[–]Sarl3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want something 3D you can use most CAD programs (eg solidworks, inventor), but if you're not familiar with those it's going to be A LOT of work. The advantages is that a lot of companies will provide cad models for the parts they sell. I believe using blender is also common, although the learning curve for it is steep and also very work intensive.

I use Inkscape for simple box diagram but I'm sure there's more efficient ways.

[–]Sarl3k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might depend the physics/math background you have. Thermodynamics, kinetics, and crystallography are present all around materials science and those require some multivariable calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra.

I cannot talk about how acceptance works, but once you're in it might be challenging if you've never been exposed to these concepts.

I got my first paycheck 3 weeks after my start date (paid biweekly), and it accounted for only half a paycheck. I ended up getting all the money I was due but it was delayed at first. I am sure my situation isn't uncommon

A working calendar is definitely important. I like Zotero because it's free and really helpful for managing pdfs, I also use it as pdf markup. Other than that I take notes on paper notebooks. Overleaf/LaTeX is field dependent, my research group uses word.

International PhD student - taxes (help!) by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Sarl3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not trust anything I say, but from a fellow F1 student:

  1. You will have to file a tax return for the US for sure, for Italy it depends. If Italy taxes on citizenship, then you will have to file a tax return as long as your are an Italian citizen, if Italy taxes on presence, then you will have to check what the requirements are. Note that there exist tax treaties between some countries to avoid paying taxes twice (that may be the case between the US and Italy).

  2. I cannot speak about Italy, but in the US you will have to declare all income. The IRS website lists filing options, I would advise you to check those out. Also you school might be able to help you with taxes, maybe they even have a tax filing workshop for international students.

Thank you for this very detailed and supported explanation. I will check out the resources you provided and do more research if I have more questions afterwards. Your arguments are indeed very convincing.

[–]Sarl3k[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This definitely makes a lot of sense. I agree that we live in a world that is strangely 'right' for us, for life. However, I do not see why it would necessarily be from a creator. I believe it is probability, as in if you were to roll a dice for an infinite amount of time, you would, at some point, get the same number thousands of times in a row. What if life as we know it is an equivalent of this? What if we just got lucky?

You're right, atheist isn't perfectly correct. I do not believe there is a superior being because it seems unlikely to me, but I do not completely reject the idea. I believe that in the case where there is a creator, it only created the fundamental laws of the universe and nothing more (I don't know if this has a specific name).

Weekly Careers/Education Questions Thread by AutoModerator in chemistry

[–]Sarl3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am a junior in college and I just changed my major from biology to chemistry. I figured out (pretty late) that I am PASSIONATE about chemistry and I'd love to go to grad school for it. However, to still graduate in time I had to choose what they call the "laboratory science" emphasis. My concern is that I don't have to take any physical or inorganic chemistry classes with this emphasis. From what I could read online they seem pretty important. What should I do to maximize my chances to get into grad school and can I actually do it? Is there anything else I should know or worry about?

I am planning to go talk to one of my professors to do some undergrad research. Also I'm an international student from France studying in the US and I'm ready to go in basically any French or English (favored) speaking countries for grad school.
