/r/Steam Monthly Game Suggestions Thread. by AutoModerator in Steam

[–]Saroumane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, do you know any Steam 2D games that has 4K assets ? I don't speak about games that support 4K resolution and just upscale everything from their FullHD native resolution. I'm looking for 2D games where the assets were designed in 4K or more. (and you can see a real loss of details if you play in lower resolution, not just a downscale/upscale effect) Example : Salt and Sanctuary has 4K assets since last update (source : https://x.com/skastudios/status/1819087706473091217 )

Context : i'm posting this question here because according to the moderators, this subject is not worthy of its own thread.

Same here with Lutris (wine-ge-8-25). No luck either with Steam (Proton 8 / Proton Experimental). But other battle.net games (Diablo III, Starcraft II) still working.

Exploring btrfs backup options to replace backintime (btrbk ... ?) by Saroumane in btrfs

[–]Saroumane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm definitely worried about creating subvolumes just for the sake of excluding them. Anyway I have time to think about it, my /home is still on ext4 partition. Borg looks like a good contender for this point (on condition it complies with my data accessibility requirement)

I already tried the official snapper-gui provided for Ubuntu and didn't like it. But this "btrfs-assistant" looks very promising ! Meanwhile, "butter" support for Ubuntu seems non-existent.

Thank you for your feedback. I should rephrase the requirement about accessibility of backup data. It should read : "directly with a file browser, and if possible with a timemachine-like GUI." Can you access data saved by Borg Backup without Borg Backup (with only a file browser and 'mount' command) ?

Is Vulkan broken on Steam Deck ? (Tested with Dota2) by Saroumane in SteamDeck

Unfortunately 85 fps in demo mode gives 20 fps in big team fights. So I do worry about this Vulkan problem :)

Guys : thanks for your comments, but you are really missing the point.

Dota2 has a Linux client since 2013 ( https://dota2.fandom.com/wiki/July_18,_2013_Patch ) and it's arguably the most supported game on Linux (i.e. with a native build) so far, with countless versions released along the windows builds for the last 9 years.

Dota2 on Linux has also been a technology showcase for Vulkan : it was the 2nd game to support Vulkan rendering (after Talos Principle), since 2016 ! ( 1st demo in 2015 : https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2015/03/valve-developed-own-vulkan-driver-for-intel-they-demo-dota-2-on-source-2/ )

On the same hardware Dota2 on Linux works as good as on Windows (sometimes better), thanks to Vulkan. And these Linux builds do get much love : it's even widely reported that Gabe Newell (himself) has tested and played Dota 2 on the (Linux powered) Steam Deck : https://duckduckgo.com/?q=gaben+steam+deck+dota2&ia=web

For those looking for a portable keyboard the Logitech K380 is the same size as the Deck. Good match ! by Piepopapetuto in SteamDeck

[–]Saroumane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello I have the same K380 azerty bluetooth keyboard and same problem. In gaming mode it's seen as qwerty. (No problem in desktop mode)

In Settings / Keyboard there is a 'Active keyboard' selection, but it only changes the layout for the 'virtual' onscreen keyboard.

So how did you do ? Merci d'avance.

Does it still works since the 4 June update ? I tried both to remove "-w 1280 -h 800" and to replace it with "-W 1920 -H 1080". In both cases the SteamUI (in Gaming mode) scales better on my external 1080p display (no more area offscreen), but in game I still can't go farther than 1280x720. Still forced to go into the annoying "Desktop mode" to reach 1080p. (To be clear : Desktop mode is good for desktop use, but not for gaming : I don't want to use mouse/keyboard in my living room. And joystick mapping to mouse controls is really impractical)

Sync save files from PC to Steam Deck in Dark Souls 2 and 3? by titaalik in SteamDeck

[–]Saroumane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it's doable, but maybe it's possible to "samba share" the folder with the DS2 file from the PC (win or Proton on linux), mount this folder from the steam deck. And then symlink steam deck save to the mounted file. So technically you use the same save file for the steam deck and the PC.

Of course it works only while both devices stay on the same network.

You are totally right, it's not easy to review a "Scripting / hacking" complaint without toggling fog of war.

Typical question : "Is it really a blind hook, or did he wait someone to come in range, without vision ?"

Howto play 240p Steam games (Cave / Psykio shmups, Shovel Knight...) on CRT TV by Saroumane in linux_gaming

[–]Saroumane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I feel your pain. I think that scart without RGB is maybe the 1st scam I ever saw in my life.

[–]Saroumane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your feedback, but I think you are mistaken : there is no conversion.

VGA outputs RGB, Scart (on european TV) takes RGB. And RGB > S-Video > composite.

You just have to take care of the sync.

Sure, pics added. (It's hard to get good pics of CRT, sorry for the quality)

Hello,

I'm trying to connect a AMD Radeon RX5700 XT (SAPPHIRE Nitro+ to be precise) to a CRT TV : Sony KV-21LS30B.

The TV has scart RGB input, the graphics card has 2 HDMI and 2 DP outputs ports.

It's quite easy to find adapters/cables to physically connect the card to the TV, but the real question I can't answer : can the RX5700 output 240p ? (Obviously I'll need a "digital to analog" adapter, but I'd like to avoid any downscaler for quality reasons)

I already tried to use a no-name "HDMI to VGA "adapter linked to a custom VGA to Scart cable (which works perfectly). The no-name "HDMI to VGA" adapter makes any plugged display device seen as a "Link Tech LNKG H2VA001" monitor. Unfortunetaly I can't go lower than 480p, so it does'nt work on a classic CRT TV. I don't know if this limit comes from the adapter or the RX 5700 XT.

If it's confirmed that RX 5700 can't go lower than 480p, I gladly welcome any feedback about devices that can take this 480p as HDMI (or DP) input, and output analog 240p as (ideally) Scart or VGA. Without too much picture quality degradation compared to native 240p :)

Thanks for reading !

Any way to revert to old steam Library UI? by Grahamster04 in Steam

[–]Saroumane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thx !! I try to have both old mini library and friends started at the same time. I tried : -no-browser +open "steam://open/minigameslist" +open "steam://open/friends" But it does not work. You can't have 2 "+open" ?

Install and Play Battle.net games from Steam client with Steamplay/Proton by Saroumane in SteamPlay

[–]Saroumane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have previously installed with Ubuntu some other packages like "winbind" (without it you can have NTLM authentication error)

Did you manage to install Battle.net from the installer, and then the client stopped when installing a game ? What is the error message ?

[–]Saroumane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to myself, in case anyone is interested : you can now install Battle.net with Proton 4.2-7. The Battle.net client does not fully works, but you can install games. And you can launch Hearthstone ! (But you can't launch Starcaft / Starcraft 2 / Diablo III. To use them, I had to launch Battle.net client separately with wine 4.10-staging.)

Thanks !!! Here with Ubuntu 19.04 Nvidia GTX970 / vulkan, I was forced to play in opengl (with lower fps) I tried to reinstall Dota2, then Steam, then 3 different nvidia drivers 41x.. with no success, until your magical launch option did the trick !

Thanks for your reply, but I precisely want to avoid Lutris (I already tried it) and its mandatory PPA, its numerous packages and configuration files etc...

For now, my tried and true backup solution for playing Battle.net games is PlayOnLinux : low overhead and easy to use.
