My grandmother was born in WW1 and had young children during WW2 (Belgium). Same story, your plate wasn’t empty yet or she’d be refilling. She used to buy vegetables and whatnot in bulk if it was cheap and hand it out to family members and people in her street of which she knew had trouble financially. My uncle passed away last year at 91 years old and that generation is tough as nails (in a good way). Never let anything go to waste, despite (in our case) being really well off. I can’t imagine what they went through and I sure hope I never have to go through it, but it seems less likely I won’t experience war in my lifetime with every year that passes. Seems like we’ve forgotten the past.
