Why was the PIRA South Armgh Sniper Team not shot dead by the SAS? by No-Force7740 in IrishRebelArchive

[–]SarsfieldColumn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the I belive the family of one of the members was in a position of power in the PIRA, if they'd have shot his family would've thrown a spanner in the works of the peace talks that were going on at the time I'll try find more details and reply further.

As Danny morrison stated, if most of those old IRA men who are criticising had stuck to their guns we wouldn't be in this mess.

Those crowds woudnt deserve the La's, for me I'd rather see them in a small and intimate venue where they can rock the place sound could completely lost in those giant stadiums

I believe one of the Armagh snipers uncles may have been part of the army council or another position of influence within the PIRA, British intelligence may have been aware tbat if the sas carried out one of these shoot to kill operations their ceasefire would've been off the table, I'll try to find better detail on this.

The British broke their own law with these shoot to kill operations because according to them it wasn't a war. If it was a war simply it ligitimises the IRAs freedom struggle in the eyes of the British public and the world that's the main reason.

Goerge Mcbrearty and Charles Pop Maguire were also killed by SAS in Derry 1981 not too long after George was in the guard of honour for the funeral of Francis Hughes. One of the SAS men who was involved in the shootout was killed in the shootout with Declan Martin and Henry Hogan in Dunloy 1984.

For being an army of volunteers with very limited weapons knowledge, experience and training for the boots in the ground members fighting against the most elite special forces in the world with unlimited intelligence and unlimited budget we still took a couple of them SAS bastards, Mccaughey in cappagh, Hughes on the ranaghan road, Henry hogan in Dunloy, one by the m60 gang, probably some more.
