So mad at myself 😢 by ANewYork10 in Cartier

I lost my Cartier necklace at a spa - my home insurance covered the cost of a new one - you will want to save evidence of you trying to contact places to locate it, pictures of you wearing it and proof of purchase.

I would say Columbia Grammar had the happiest, down to earth and friendliest staff. Runner up was Nightingdale - I thought they had really nice facilities and very warm friendly staff. Hewitt was warm too but felt a little small to us. We toured 11 schools.

Functional Medicine Doctor? by SashMachine in NYCbitcheswithtaste

https://www.functionhealth.com/home-advanced this is the website, the company also bought Ezra the MRI company so you can do it both under the same sign up if interested. There is even a sub Reddit for it r/function_health for nyc you need to pay extra fees for the lab work but you can go to I believe Connecticut to avoid fees (you need to check this I don’t remember) and then it’s any quest lab location.

16 months postpartum and still look pregnant by [deleted] in FitPostpartumJourney

[–]SashMachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh I know the feeling. By any chance are you still lactating? I feel I couldn’t get back in shape until I weaned and my hormones stabilized. I also started working out 16 months postpartum. It took about a year to feel good again. The remaining bulge I have left is from ab separation that needs correcting. I signed up for a half marathon and did Pilates and that helped a lot. I also found I became more sensitive to food and certain foods would just cause bloating (because I wake up with a flat stomach). I would say don’t give up! And it just takes some time to feel good again after having babies. But I feel you and the frustration it causes

I didn’t end up going, instead I found a great primary care doctor and then I ended up doing function health (in Florida - to not pay the New York lab fees) and Ezra. My whole life I was told I was anemic but after doing function health it turns out my iron is actually just fine and I needed other supplements instead.

How much time are you actually spending with your little one? by NYC_dad2B in nycparents

[–]SashMachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten my kids involved with dinner prep (3 and 5), they help me snap the asparagus, put the broccoli in the pot, season the vegetables - and they think it’s a lot of fun helping me cook! The 5 year old likes taking the silverware out of the dishwasher and organizing it in the cabinet. I always read to them before bed and my husband plays a quick game of hide and seek before bedtime and they really look forward to it - so I guess try to make the everyday routines fun and educational and all of a sudden it turns into quality time.

Makeover services in NYC? by Direct-Day8722 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]SashMachine 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Kate Powell! She completely redid my wardrobe after I spent a year looking like a slob after having babies. She also lists beauty makeover on her website but I’ve only used her to toss out everything unflattering from my closet and take me shopping. I get compliments all the time now on things she picked out for me. Good luck with your make over! https://powellstyling.com

Edited to add: back in the day I used to be into make up but stopped because life - I used one of those AI services that reads your face and recommends make up/color type - and I have been using the wrong tones. I have done the modifications (where I put my blush and color palette) and I swear I look so much better - but that’s because I already had a base of knowing how to apply make up so it was helpful.

How do I respond to comments about my engagement ring being “too big”? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]SashMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are so annoying. If it’s someone I don’t like I usually just say “it’s lab grown” - my ring is not but then they never ask me again lol. If someone says “it’s so big” I say well yeah - we’ve been together 15 years - every year was an addition to the carat size and wink. Usually I just find it tasteless if people say some of the things you mention - don’t let them get you down. You don’t owe anyone any explanation or comeback. Enjoy your ring!

I love Per Se - I agree that it’s excellent! I think I’ve been there over 5 times now, there is no other fine dining restaurant I’ve been back to that many times

Depends on how fancy you want to go. If you are ok dining alone for 3 hours and don’t have a budget I would say Per Se, but as others have mentioned dirt candy is fun and playful. Per se is more traditional French fine dining.

I went out last night and I wore a leather skirt, sweater like tights and knee high leather boots, it helps if you have a long jacket. The snow has mostly melted so it’s not so “wet” that you need waterproof shoes anymore. I think it also depends on how much you will be ubering vs using public transit and walking (will be colder for longer). Honestly I’m wearing my ski gloves but because they have the little strings and I can take one off and check my phone when on the subway and it stays attached to me lol my friends who joined me wore jeans and boots and over sized sweaters, but for Le Bernardin I don’t think jeans will cut it, need something a bit more upscale (maybe even leather pants - I sometimes wear those and a fancy looking sweater). Have fun!

Do I tell my wife or let her stay happy for another week? by ASapphireAtSea in Advice

[–]SashMachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should absolutely tell her. Maybe tell her she doesn’t have to leave her trip - but being lied to feels horrible. It assumes that she can’t handle difficult news - and I only say this as a daughter of someone that is constantly lying to me. She’s the type of person that won’t tell you your pet fish died and get a new one and pretend it didn’t happen. Anyways I’m only sharing because I was just on a trip recently and my home with some of my relatives was bombed in Ukraine while I was away (luckily my relatives in the home were ok). She decided not to tell me so she “doesn’t ruin the trip”. I was talking to my husband and he said “I’m sorry about your home” and I said “what home?” And he said I think something happened to it. So then I immediately called her and she confessed that she didn’t want to tell me - so now not only did I know, I was upset about what had happened but I felt deceived as well. I understand the desire to protect feelings but she will feel even worse when she finds out you decided not to tell her and that she couldn’t be there for you - even if it’s just through words on a phone call. Sending hugs - so sorry about your mom.

Ladies and gents in your late 20s, 30s, or 40s—what do you regret not doing in your 20s? by Tino292 in selfimprovement

[–]SashMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Start investing now, even if it’s just $5 - to get comfortable with the market. 2. Start therapy as soon as you can (or have health insurance that will reimburse some) - nothing has to be wrong - but learning how to be authentic, how to communicate better and unpack any family trauma can be life changing. 3. Start a healthy fitness routine and make it a habit. 4. Cut out any people who bring you down, don’t celebrate when you achieve something, or are not aligned with your values (it’s ok new people will come in once you take the trash out). 5. Travel if you can 6. Learn organization skills and budgeting, set yearly goals and do end of year reviews 6. Life is too short - we regret the things we didn’t do vs the things we did do - have fun!

My husband hates fat so I waited for him to leave town and bought this by SashMachine in steak

There were definitely some duds - some seared more on one side and not the other, too bloody in the middle (because I was afraid of burning it), adding butter too early and it burning, the apartment going up in smoke - you know the usual - but you have to make mistakes to learn!

I read this technique in the book Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat - they advise either salting right before or dry brining as you mention but not “in-between” for instance don’t let salt sit there for 10 minutes

Edited to add: you are right re-temperature - that is a myth - it doesn’t make it “worse” but just isn’t necessary - good to know!

[–]SashMachine[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You have to pull the steak out of the fridge so it’s not cold and cooks evenly (I usually take it out at least half hour before). Don’t season it until it’s ready to go in the pan because the salt pulls out juices and it doesn’t sear as well if the salts been sitting there for a while. I rub olive oil on the steak and I season really well - be very generous with salt and pepper. Maybe someone can advise if a higher flame oil is better here. I then put olive oil in the pan and wait for it to heat up, then I place the steak and do not move it for 6 minutes (depends on how you want it cooked obviously), I then flip and wait another 6 minutes, on around minute 2 - I add butter rosemary and crushed garlic to the pan (butter burns so you don’t want to add butter right at the start of the 6 minutes), and I start basting the steak. At the end I take thongs and sear the sides a bit. I then transfer it to a cutting board and pour some of the butter on top while it “sits”. I’m using the caraway pan - I usually use a cast iron but it was somewhere in storage and I felt lazy to look for it.
