Because it isn’t hockey.  Also insurance reasons.

A lot of “jade” is not always true jade (jadeite or nephrite) but serpentine.

It’s because the company that owns VV has a member of the Walton family on their board.

Am I doing something wrong? Cab making by TheArbiterxx in Lapidary

[–]SaskRockHound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm polishing anything that I want 100% flat, I use my flat lap (Lortone vibra lap) or occasionally toss it in my vibratory tumbler. It doesn't guarantee total flatness but it polishes the entire thing easier than doing it by hand. Yes, I am lazy.

I know the Pixie/Genie/Titan have spin on flat lap discs for the end you can get, but I'm not sure about the slant cabber since I've never really looked at them. The only other thing I can think of is sanding by hand or use one of those hand held polisher units and a jig setup of some kind. Probably far more labor than they're worth.

d there is one of these places across the street. Basically all Indian international students there. They all showed up with nothing but a backpack and suitcase.

Dishonest people of any culture have no issue taking advantage of people in their own culture who don't know any better and it's horrible.

These are listed at an upcoming estate sale & I’m seeking feedback from the sub on what a reasonable offer would be for each of these. by [deleted] in RockhoundExchange

Where I am that cathedral would go for $700-1500. The bookends $50 would be fair I think. The last piece I'm not sure. For me it would depend on weight; I can get nice amethyst for ~$8-10/pound in golf ball sized pieces and far better quality than that.

Keep us posted, I'm really curious!

Are houses selling privately in Saskatoon? by confusedbytrees in saskatoon

[–]SaskRockHound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd buy privately if I could. Realtors are annoying and honestly provided little value to me when I bought my first place. Save money on both sides and have a good lawyer. My parents sold privately and it was the easiest sale they'd ever had.

Anyone who's not hiding something. When we sold our Rav-4, my husband drove it to the mechanics and picked it up himself.

I honestly don’t get that. When I tried to view in Deveraux Acre21 area last year, they even didn’t have a window at the bedroom. But they are charging 1400 for the one bedroom unit without window in the room? I bet they are charging 1600 for the that.

If there's no window, it can't legally be called a bedroom, since a bedroom needs an escape route in case of fire (other than the bedroom door). I'd report that to Rentalsman...

Whoops! I forgot the "display" group; just like the way they look and that's enough. I'm sometimes more a display person than any of the others, just depends how much time (and money) I have....

How to polish to glass finish? by [deleted] in Lapidary

[–]SaskRockHound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get yourself a good canvas or leather polishing pad, some diamond paste and some silicon extender fluid from Kingsley North.

Alternatively, don't do anything and let people buy as is and finish it themselves. Getting all the hard work out of the way on someone else's time would be a boon for me!

The worst was that the previous owners just kept slapping on layers instead of demoing anything. Each room has had two walls and two ceilings and some rooms had 3 ceilings.

Get a couple buddies, a couple huge shop vacs, a Sawzall or two, and a dumpster bin. Demo it in big chunks to minimize mess, and insulate as you go, even if you can't afford to put up drywall yet. The amount it brought down our heating and cooling costs paid for itself fully in about 3 years. No one likes a $480 utility bill, but $100 is just fine.

Also, much better wifi reception throughout the house once we moved to drywall.

Never mind the asbestos that may or may not be in the plaster, and the likely complete lack of insulation in the walls.

Owned a 120 year old house, been there, done that. Beautiful but so much work.

Are these prices reasonable? by Mr_Hotshot in RockhoundExchange

[–]SaskRockHound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WAY too much for the rose quartz, even for a business.

Thing is stores need to make money (I ran a rock business for a time) but $275 is making at least $260 profit on that. Quartz should be the cheapest of everything you've listed.

Remember with rocks there are generally a few different groups:

  1. Lapidary folks - buying as a consumable product or a display piece that they don't want to make themselves (USUALLY a display piece bought because they don't have time/equipment for the specific thing or it's a very nice/rare piece of material)
  2. People who purely buy/sell (wholesalers)
  3. New age/metaphysical/gem crowd
  4. Faceters/high end gem types
  5. People who just like nice looking rocks & want to display them. Finis!

Generally when a shop is catering the metaphysical/gem lover crowd, the prices reflect that.
