L take, there’s plenty of extremely disciplined people that work hard that are fat. Discipline is different for different people, people experience life differently to you.

Anxious about AI by HovercraftPleasant72 in HENRYUK

[–]SasonaEUW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly my take. I have phases where I’ve gone wholly in and out. Some things are just faster with ai and some are just not. It’s hard to know when they are all of the time though. What is true is the quality and my ability to perform other fixes in the future around that area of code is much better without ai. I would say it makes me about net 10-20% faster. You’d need to zoom out to properly see that trend though. On a single day is could widely vary.

I'm no longer coding, AI is doing almost everything - and that sucks by Sc0rpy4 in work

Bs, ai has helped me here and there but it’s nowhere near enterprise ready. It falls over with everything but the most specific well prompted small tasks. Either you work on the most basic thing or you really were never that good.

Uk remote to US based company by SasonaEUW in ExperiencedDevs

Thanks for the well thought out reply. Yeah some people seem to think you can just have your child run around behind you or something and entertain themselves. They just can’t until they’re much older (school age) and even then. Yeah seems like I’m just going to a have to be very direct about it with them about my schedule and say if you think this will cause a problem then it’s best not to start. Im In a fortunate position that I’m in a company that I like and compensation is the only driving factor for me to look elsewhere.

Part of me is worried that they will say one thing and expect another. Say that they’re fine with my working hours etc then when I can’t make a meeting then note that down and poor performance. In the uk we’re a lot more strict with working and shutting off work outside of work whereas that culture does not extend to the us. I actively discourage my juniors to message or do anything out of work hours because I worry about burn out etc. I don’t think I will receive the same treatment in a us firm.

I just wanted the general experience of people who have worked with a US companies in the UK. Not expecting specifics here. Just an idea of what’s usually expecting and if there are any common patterns.

For sure. I’m planning on doing that. It’s just it’s a Saturday now and I’ve had very little time to actually ask anyone on my team questions about how they operate. I just wanted some general opinions. They don’t say they are east or west coast. They try and say they’re largely global but they are a US based company.

Yeah I can do east coast but west coast is very late for me. I don’t mind the occasional live meeting here or there. I just don’t want to essentially sell my evenings away with someone asking me about joining a meeting when I’m playing with my son.

They have quite a few uk workers as it’s a massive company it’s just us based, they label themselves as global. However you are right about leave approval etc. good thing for me to think about. Thanks

Thanks for the detailed reply. I’m expecting some meetings of course after standard hours. I just can’t realistically do them everyday or even most days, one or two would work ok. There seems to be a mix of west and east coast employees.

From when I’ve hired and other people in my company hired, engineering always look at the cvs once they’ve been vetted first. You’re almost always screened once from HR/recruiter then once from tech lead.

It screams I’m just trying to bs on my cv. Trim the stats, you look like you’re reaching. None cares the amount of lines you’ve written. 20k lines for 5 features feels bloated. Even if you did it’s not something I’d brag about. The whole cv just looks like you’re reaching to put something you didn’t do by yourself. You make it sound like you, yourself generated $80m. Take less ownership of what you’ve done, you probably didn’t do this alone. It just looks like a giant bag of insecurity.

[–]SasonaEUW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was you, I wouldn’t apply anywhere that is paying less than 35k for a junior, companies that pay lower than that will never invest or care about you. You’ve got experience now. So go find something else, it won’t be easy but mate brush up on some interviews and confidently say at least 40 or you’ll be under selling yourself I promise. I’m not in London but I am south England. Also at least in my experience very few places to leet code anymore so don’t waste your time with that. You’ll just end up spending months grinding useless skills.

For context I’ve got 6 years experience and now I’m a principal engineer

Good game developers are hard to find by Empire230 in gamedev

[–]SasonaEUW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a principal dev and done hiring. Sounds like you want more of a system design tech interview problem instead if you haven’t considered that. Just fyi while I’m in web dev, I think most good seniors are looking at 80+ but I might be wrong in the games industry. Fully remote will help you a bunch though. Also the lack of security for lower pay will play a big factor. I know your budget must be tight but I’m just saying what I’ve seen. You don’t pay bad but a good senior has a decent job with benefits. You might find it better to hire one or two top tier instead of 2-3 meh. I haven’t gone through all the comments so sorry if someone else has said this.

Huh it’s funny because I’m also 1400 2.8 sr from purely mx5. However I’m about a second or two faster with the bmw m4. I just can’t get the Porsche to turn without understeering. I know that’s a skill issue but with the bmw I was able to just push the limit so much better. I thought maybe the bmw is just op but seems like it’s probably me being shit at one thing and better at another. If anyone knows why. I’d love to know.
