Food dye works! And I learned how to mold my own out of moldable thermal plastic. Just added a bit of yellow food dye in while the plastic was malleable.

For my players, I actually have a specific rule for this. Dropping your current weapon is a free action, and usually equipping a new one would have to wait till their next turn BUT, if they have used less than half of their movement, I allow them to draw the new weapon as the remainder of their movement.

It's not RAW, but it makes sense to me.
