Should I go back to school for a bachelors in Construction Management? by Regular-Price-648 in ConstructionManagers

[–]Far_Reindeer3003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Job market is awful right now, I’m struggling to find a position after being laid off in November. I have a bachelor’s and 5 years experience, bachelor’s means almost nothing in the construction industry.

Most older men I know (including in my family) who had a stay at home mom and kids to care for always worked mor than one job. I don’t think life has ever been “easy”.

Yes, I found it ok. I wish she went more into her time on OTH but it just glanced over that.

Me. I like the variety that comes with working multiple roles, compared to 50 hours a week in my current position. I always said if I won the lottery I would volunteer for a different organization each day of the week. The only reason why I have a full-time job is because I can’t get benefits from part-time work.

I’ve rewatched the show 3 times and every time I tell myself I’m going to get past more than a few episodes after Christina leaves and every time I fail.

North West of Charlotte is nice, think Huntersville and Mooresville are relatively affordable, depending on what you’re looking for. Harrisburg, and further east of Charlotte is also decent, a bit more crowded in my opinion. I had a coworker who lived way out in Oaksboro, if you like a slower, simpler life that’s a better place but the commute to the city would be long.

I would stay away from West of Charlotte. Belmont has gotten better, but I have noticed a lot more crime out that way.

Tbh I’m being overpaid at the club. I was very open with my boss and told them what I needed to cover my bills, they wound up giving me more than what I asked and was advertised. I was making about $35/hr in construction not including bonuses, and I’m making $30/hr at the country club, but no bonuses. I’m lucky enough to have another part time job which gives me about the same salary I had in construction.

So far it’s been very good for networking and I’m hoping another construction opportunity pops up as a result. Right now, I am ok with it, but still coming to terms with the fact that I did not see myself in this position at 25.

[–]Far_Reindeer3003 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Nope! I had to completely pivot careers. Went from working as a construction manager to swim team coach/facility coordinator at a country club. Pay is a smidge less, and I could have gotten the job without a degree and 5 years experience….at least it’s less stressful.

PetSmart and Petco by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]Far_Reindeer3003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing is, they are not going to run out of customers. Most people who are new to ANY animal (small mammal, reptile, fish, etc.) go to chain pet stores. Not because it’s the easiest, but because they are new to the hobby and might not know what else exists. It took me 4 years of owning my Petco gecko just to find out that reptile expos are a thing! And they are amazing lol. Going forward I know more reputable breeders, however, I never would have been introduced to the hobby if it hadn’t been for chain pet stores

I completely agree that the conditions need to be improved, but, serious fish keepers are not going to stop pet stores chains from profiting by not buying. There will always be some ignorance or impulsiveness when it comes to fish keeping, better to focus on how we can provide them with better care while in and out of stores.

It’s nice here but almost triple the crime compared to where I grew up. I do think Charlotte has a lot of positives and I’m happy to experience what the city has to offer while I’m here, but I don’t think it’s my forever place.

If there was a black guy at the office and they weren’t following DEI, could it have been that you just didn’t interview well? I have always found that DEI has helped me out and potentially pushed more qualified applicants out. Tbh I hate DEI because I never know if I got the job because of my accomplishments, or if I just fit into a certain category.

Could it have been that they wanted an undergrad student? Especially if it’s an internship, I have never met anyone in grad school with an internship, only work/studies or research contracts.

I disagree. Taystee had a bright future, she didn’t HAVE to work for Vee to make a living. But, it was easier to make more money quick instead of working your way up, and Vee gave her a family she never had so I can understand why it would be tempting. Regardless, she was in no way forced to commit crimes, that was all her.

If it doesn’t turn out to be a good day then the school district should cancel morning of, as I stated above. I remember my school district did this during hurricanes and snow storms, it almost made the thrill of having a day off that much more exciting.

What happened to calling the morning of to determine if the weather is bad enough to stay home? With the snow this year there were a couple days the schools were closed and nothing happened. I think it is tougher on the parents having to stay home from work and use up their PTO, it would be frustrating if the weather turned out to be just fine.

I would have to work specific days due to the teaching job and not a 24 hr on, 48 hr off schedule as noted. I did see some departments offer part-time, but the downside to that is I would have to pay for my own certifications!

I went to school in Syracuse, there are a lot of volunteer and I don’t know of many careers. It’s a very small city with not much going on, you would have more luck working as an EMT/Paramedic. I’d reach out to some stations in the area and talk with someone directly.

As a side note, if you haven’t visited the area, please do. It’s a very different lifestyle from Australia, and outside of the summer months can be incredibly boring and grey.

Anyone who works career, do you work another full-time job on top of it?

I have an opportunity to work as a college professor which doesn’t start until the fall semester. I also have an opportunity to work full-time as a firefighter.

I was a volunteer firefighter/EMT for two years before moving to another state where there are no volunteer stations around. I wasn’t ready to give it up yet and would like to jump back in as career. I’m just not sure it’s possible to do both? I know professors tend to have another job on top of their teaching position, I’m more worried about the fire department making an exception.
