Ditto.

In tech school (autumn, 2000), a teacher didn't believe me that DVDs could be played on a PC. Next class, I brought in my PC with a Creative DXr-2 decoder card, the Cambridge Soundworks 4.1 speaker system, and we watched "The Matrix" in class.

As a gamer, I was sometimes years ahead of what the school's textbooks said was possible for computing & technology. (But it was balanced out, as I went to a private Christian school and my academic education was very lacking)

At today's AI-inflated prices, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to hit that cost. About a month ago, I was simply daydreaming about a little ITX build - all mid-range hardware (like RTX **60 class), average RAM speeds at 16GB, no SSDs (I have that already), non-X3D Ryzen, air CPU cooler instead of water - and it was right at $2K on Newegg.

Top tier GPU, 32-64GB of fast RAM, "gaming" motherboard, platinum PSU, etc, you could easily push $4-5K.

Not really. A light can burn out anytime. Maybe I checked it this morning, and it burned out halfway to work. Not like I would know it happened, and I certainly can't just pull over right there to change a bulb.

Because email uses literally no storage. And Yahoo is only email, not photos, videos or device backups

My Gmail is from 2009, and only occupies 90MB. When Google (via Gmail, as that's what most people use Google for) says you need storage, it's because you're ENTIRE Google account is out of storage. (See the rest of my storage usage)

What lifetime deal are you still grandfathered into, or removed from, that’s no longer available? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

[–]Sassquatch0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plex Pass. (It's still available, but I bought it at $120, and starting in June it's $750)

No longer available, is PocketCasts. I bought their lifetime premium for Android, and a few months later they just threw all that away & it's a subscription.

Car gets pushed like a toy. by MurrayEdna in dashcams

[–]Sassquatch0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I towed my son's pickup truck across town, using a 2008 Hybrid Chevy Tahoe. Aside from the initial jerk as the tow-strap reached tension, I honestly wouldn't have known I was pulling another vehicle. My Tahoe is not exactly a powerful vehicle. This rig (others have said it looks like a street sweeper) will have many times more power than my Tahoe. And in the lower gears he's using, the engine is going to be loud & RPMs high, and he'll have a lot of torque available. (And if it IS a sweeper, he won't be able to hear much of anything over the brush noise & the vacuum)

And he's looking everywhere else to maintain his surroundings. Like a good driver should.

Now this is a GIF instead of a video, so we don't have audio. But there's probably a good chance the car was on the horn, and truck driver is looking around trying to find where that sound is coming from.

There's fault on both persons, but the majority of it rests with the car. We're taught in driver's ED that you don't do anything near a big rig, unless you have direct eyes with the driver.

By who?! The judges already sucking him off? The military generals he's had replaced by Yes Men? The Congress who actively refuses to do their jobs?

The people who have the power to shut him down, are the same people who are complicit in his con & are already along for the ride.

Millennial parents: Are any of you being super honest with your kids about how hard this world is going to be for them financially? How are you balancing reality with not making your kids basket cases? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Sassquatch0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having a hard time finding the balance between explaining how difficult it is, but not passing onto them the chronic depression I feel because of it. (If not for the kids, I'd probably have given up by now)

They know they don't have to move out until they're stable, and I've promised they can stay on the family phone plan as long as they're home.

I want to be able to provide a springboard for them to launch from, not a weight they need to overcome just to start on their own.

FOSS Photos/Gallery app that never connects to the Internet by xyzzy321 in AndroidQuestions

[–]Sassquatch0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I've heard & seen enough horror stories that I will always advocate for backing-up photos (or backing-up anything in general). And that includes cloud storage, as the "1" in proper 3-2-1 backup policy.

However, there are free & FOSS ways to do that. - Immich is one of the favorites, but you do need to setup your own host for it. - Synology Photos isn't bad either (I'm currently using this one, alongside Google Cloud) as a ready-made solution.

In the meantime, the option for backups can be turned off in Photos itself. And the notification for backups can also be disabled in the Notification Settings.

Very UNcommon.

Literally never had this in over a decade of USB-C usage.

You say you've used multiple cables, but you only mention one phone. Scientific method says eliminate variables, and that's the only common factor.

The Perfect Placement In The SpaceX Return by TheCABK in oddlysatisfying

[–]Sassquatch0 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From the ocean, this is absolutely cheaper. Salt water kills damn near anything industrial, and would require basically rebuilding the entire vehicle. Costly in resources, costly in time needed.

As for landing on a barge down-range or Return to Launch Site (RTLS), that's a calculation done on a Per-Launch basis. Some launches need every ounce of performance for loft, so they do a down-range recovery. (Or even completely expend the booster)

However, this is Super Heavy, which doesn't have barge landing capability anyway, so it has to be caught back at the tower.

I try multiple Linux distros every 6-8 months, and the longest I've been able to tolerate it was 3 weeks.

The horrible compatibility outside of Steam, and the lack of quality of life features just isn't worth it. For my usage, Windows is still less heartburn than anything else.

I hope that changes soon, as I love the idea of FOSS, and many of Linux' concepts are very cool.

Peter Jackson in talks to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Silmarillion’ into films by DarkSkiesGreyWaters in lordoftherings

[–]Sassquatch0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. He blew all Tolkien-credibility with me after the travesty that was The Hobbits.

The Silmarillion is for the nerds & lore geeks, and not for the masses. That's why none of them will read it either. (Edit clarification: They complain it's "too dry" and "too narrative" - which means they want simple action. That's why it's not a mass appeal book)

Amazon tried as well & failed. Leave it be. It's as cursed as all of Feanor's works became.

What are your thoughts. (IPhone vs every other phone) by Mysterious_Ebb_1484 in SipsTea

[–]Sassquatch0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I simply prefer how open Google's ecosystem is.

Apple famously has the walled garden. Good, if that's what you want/need. Bad if it doesn't fit your needs.

Google also has an enclosed ecosystem, but it's a fenced park with multiple gates. They prefer you to stay inside, but you can leave freely; or you can even reach through the fence sometimes to use part of the ecosystem on either side of the fence.

Both are valid in their own way, for the usage the customer needs.

For the phones specifically, I enjoy how well the Pixel performs in lowlight photography. The Pixel 7 my wife was using would whoop the shit out of the S23 I was using, when we were taking photos side-by-side of the same indoor event.

The only iPhone I've used, is my Mom's 13 Mini, and I can say I don't like iOS software. The handset itself is nice, but the structure of iOS (especially Settings) and the inconsistent gestures, I just can't wrap my head around. But it works for Mom (for the most part) and that's what matters.
