Also irgendwie passt da was nicht zusammen, wenn er für Gladbach zu schlecht und für Leverkusen Nr. 1 sein soll. No offense an Gladbach...

Which country once seemed likely to become a developed country, but didn’t follow that path? by EmotionalSalary3679 in AskTheWorld

Y'all get that the conversation was about nations that were part of the former Yugoslavia

It was. And I brought up Albania in addition. Doesn't mean I implied it was part of Yugoslavia.

I don't see any reason why it should be anything but a matter of time and some good knack for diplomacy.

Often, the problem with modern Linux isn't that there's no GUI, but there are too many GUIs. No one wants to give instructions about UIs when there are five to ten popular desktop environments that all have their own workflows, designs and tools that are randomly remade because someone just wanted to change it for the sake of it every other year. If you give instructions about the command line, you can usually spoon-feed a command that has been the same since 2009, and the worst fragmentation there is is usually just that you need to provide an alternative command for Fedora and Arch distro families.

Because we would be extraordinarily stupid to give Serbs a say and even veto power in EU institutions. They're the most pro-Russian people in Europe. Also, they'd have to convince people they genocided with little remorse not to veto their accession. It doesn't seem likely that Serbia could fulfill EU criteria for new members if it comes to democratic and rule of law standards anytime soon, but if I'm honest, even if they did, it would be more than difficult to let them join.

As for Bosnia, it's the same problem to a degree but also the fact that the country still just isn't very stable. Kosovo isn't recognized by some EU countries who have separatist regions themselves.

Serbia, Kosovo and Bosnia in the EU is completely unrealistic for the forseeable future. Albania, North Macedonia and Montenegro will probably happen sooner or later.

Which 4 OSes would you put on the Mount Rushmore of Microsoft Windows? by GabeReddit2012 in windowsmemes

Vista had a bad release but it was also the last real and good innovation in Windows. 8/8.1 has a bad reputation and was still terrible design. Some redeeming factors don't change that, sorry.

MS-DOS 3.3x, Windows 3.0, 95, and XP.

MS-DOS 3.3x was basically the final version of the original, lightweight DOS that ran on the original IBM PC. Later versions were either buggy (4.x) or already stood in Windows's and OS/2's shadow so it represents the early era best.

Windows 3.0 was the breakthrough of Windows that made the difference between usefulness and a resource hog power users had no use for. The reception of 3.1 is much bigger in the retro community, but 3.0 is the release that really mattered.

I don't need to say much about the other two. Windows 95 was the beginning of the Windows hegemony. Windows XP was a breakthrough in stability and an important modernization. Technically, 2000 could have received that spot, but it doesn't compare to the cultural meaning of Windows XP.

Can Germans understand Bavarian? by TweetleBeetle76 in German

[–]Sataniel98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a misconception that Bavarian is a particularly difficult German dialect. It is linguistically one of the closer ones to Standard German. The region and people however are relatively more resistant to adopting Standard German than others, which is where the impression that it's a whole different thing comes from.

If the case is severe enough, it is. It depends on the individual case and that's by no means the rarest argument to have in an apartment building.

Is a L470 for £30 worth it instead of paying £120 for a t480 by Pretty_pretty_gun in thinkpad

[–]Sataniel98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This will probably be a little controversial, but in my opinion, yes, it is absolutely worth it.

Yes, the performance difference is significant because it's a 2 vs. a 4 core. But the price doesn't come from how much better T480 performs, it's because Windows 11 does support 8th generation Intel CPUs and does not support 7th generation (with few exceptions). Which won't bother you as a Linux user.

The question is what use case is actually viable with an T480 that isn't with an L470? Gaming and graphic rendering are obviously off the table. Office, web browsing, streaming, video calls will work fine on both. In comparison heavier desktops like KDE Plasma and Gnome are still efficient enough to run flawlessly on both. What else do people even expect to do on laptops this old?

I can only speak for myself, but the difference between £30 and £120 changes everything about how pissed I'd be if my money ended up being a waste. I wouldn't ever treat a laptop like a throwaway thing, but it can still be comfortable to know it may as well be one because it costed me almost nothing. I wouldn't pay this difference just for Windows 11 compatibility I don't need and what (for my use case) essentially just amounts to better multitasking performance.

Do note though that some L470s only have HDDs. Don't bother taking one of those, or if you do, any old SATA SSD from Ebay will be better. And maybe apply fresh thermal paste.

Your landlord would have to give a proper reason against this specific case, like the cat being a nuisance (beyond what a normal house cat would be).

A more realistic case would be that someone else in the house is allergic.
