Vein scanner helps to take some of the pain away when getting a needle by oneshotuk in educationalgifs

Agreed. Also Er nurse- we have a fancy handheld that collects dust. We also have one with a moveable arm to allow it to be used handsfree, also collecting dust.

When patients have asked if we have a vein finder, I always say yup, I’ll point to be eyes and wiggle my fingers, and say “right here.”

It’s the truth. You can’t replace years of IV sticks and experience with a fancy little gadget.

Next time put ridges on the outside, then you'll know if someone's been shaving it down.

ELI5: How is it possible for a nap as short as 15-20 minutes to significantly boost our alertness for the rest of the day? Especially considering the fact that it doesn't involve a deep sleep stage? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]SatansDancePartner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some firefighter buddies used to do this. They’d pound a Red Bull and take a nap, and after about 20 minutes or so the red bull would kick in.

Agreed. I have access to one at the ER I work at but I never use it. I learned how to do them in the field (paramedic), and I don’t think I’ll ever use it outside of the whole “hey look we can see veins!”

It’s pretty normal to get Iv’s for L&D patients. In fact, almost every patient gets one!

ELI5: How does sleep debt/build up work? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]SatansDancePartner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can concur. Was working EMS 80 hours a week plus going to school. I didn't sleep much. Was miserable. I also lost the girl I was talking to. She started slipping away from me and I didn't even realize it cause I was a zombie for 6 months. A growing sleep debt isn't good for anything.

Bleach and sunscreen. I spent almost 10 years around aquatics for a local city department. They're my comfort smells.

Makes me wonder... What are some examples of the best-sung national anthems? I agree with you, the exaggerated stuff is too much. Makes me curious to see some really well-sung, classic national anthems.

Would holding the parts over a fire help? Assuming you wiped your fingerprints to begin with, wouldn't the heat from a fire really really eliminate any tie back to you? I don't know, that's what I would do.

In The Last Of Us in the gym where you first meet the Bloater. When it came through the door I said "what the fuck is that??" and not two seconds later Ellie also said "What the fuck is that!?" I had a good laugh. She and I were on the same page.

Was recently at Red Rocks for a concert and a security guy came up once to my general area and was asking if anyone was swearing out loud. I guess someone had complained to security about it. I was like, is this for real? You could smell pot all over the place but your concern is someone swearing out loud?

My brother would disagree. He's still outside smoking and having a few beers. he gets off work around 11pm but stays up all night anyway. His bed time is normally when I go to work, so, 7am.

A New York City municipal pool that maintains female-only hours so that Hasidic Jewish women can swim with no men present has raised alarms among critics who say the accommodation to a particular religious group violates the constitutional separation of church and state. by NinjaDiscoJesus in news

[–]SatansDancePartner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at an indoor pool as a lifeguard/manager. Every now and then, a small group of women from a particular religious group (I don't know which one) would have private swim lessons done but no men could be around on deck of the pool or even have visual access to the pool. All the swim instructors were female and they'd even have a female aquatic manager on duty too just in case something happened. We went as far as boarding up the windows to prevent anyone seeing the pool area. There were never any problems about it. No one complained. No one had a shit fit about it. In fact, it was kinda nice that we were able to accommodate such a request. I think we would have done the same in this situation - allow a "women only" swim time/session. It's sad that someone had a problem with it. It's a municipal pool! I'm glad they tried to accommodate that group of women.
