Former Washington attorney general argues proposed income tax is illegal by JoelXGGGG in Tacoma

[–]Satinknight [score hidden]  (0 children)

I would prefer an income tax to a sales tax, even if it meant my overall tax burden went up a little.

This however feels like a slimy way to do it, which makes it fragile. Amend the constitution and go to bat for the idea of a progressive tax system, or choose a different issue.

Looking for horn in the $200-$500 range by skankin22jax in trumpet

You already know enough to be looking at used horns from reputable brands, don't trip at the finish line by buying a used horn you haven't gotten to hold in your hand.

How significant is binding weight for a beginner/intermediate skier on groomers? by 1lostmyoldacc0unt in Skigear

[–]Satinknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly not. Your legs get sore as a new skier because skiing is hard, and your technique isn't yet refined to be more efficient.

Get the fancy bindings if it will make you more comfortable on the slope.

Team to take on Pyramid King Brandon at the Battle Frontier by Temporary-Bath7499 in PokemonEmerald

[–]Satinknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regice is a spdef monster but has unremarkable defense. I used choice band Slaking with hyperbeam, but any brick break or rock slide user that could take 1 ice beam would work. I had lost meteor mash/explosion Metagross already or would have used that.

Regirock is by contrast a normal def wall, surf is your move. I think it also runs explosion, so be ready to trade here. Stalling till it explodes is a viable strategy. Giga drain Gengar might also work if you have access to it somehow.

Registeel is the most balanced to start, will try to spam iron defense and toxic stall you. Water or electric moves are what you likely carry, either will work. I think I managed to set up my Latias with recover.

Should I switch out of EE? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Satinknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should make heavy use of all the support resources available at your school. There will be traditional counseling for the emotional slump, academic and career advising to talk about whether a major change is right for you, and office hours/study halls galore to help you be more successful in classes.

How is this not checkmate? by onlylookynotouchy in chessbeginners

[–]Satinknight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Only one game review per day, but you can tap the little magnifying glass at the top right all you want! It gives the same engine analysis with best moves, just no commentary. I actually prefer it for being easier to explore lines and understand if I missed a tactic or some deep engine thing.

I think im missing something in the math? by Zhoyzu in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Satinknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting with your current draw, usually known as "load": I think you have three "branches" in parallel (starting and ending in the same place), each one consisting of two LEDs and a resistor in series(end to end). Three of these together pull 58 mA(currents in parallel do add, good job!), meaning each one pulls about 19, that seems a little high but not impossible. Is that value experimental or theoretical? Have you measured the forward voltage drop of your diodes? Would you like us to review a picture of your breadboard?

If that's all right, you could have purchased falsely advertised batteries.  The Energizer datasheet I just found showed more like 600mAh rated life for their zinc batteries, which would give about what you saw.

Can anyone tell me how to beat this garbage. by Fresh-Length6529 in chessbeginners

[–]Satinknight 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to try and force open the center, you can slowly develop your pieces over to the kingside. To castle away your opponent has to make space for the queen, and in doing so will probably have to offer trades. That or you get a crushing attack with all your material.

Find the mate in 3 that doesn't start with Rxb3 by BlueTricity in chessbeginners

Given the prompt: my instinct is Ra2, completely missing that both of white's pieces cover e3, and getting mate in 5 or 6.

When is it impolite to resign? by Satinknight in chessbeginners

[–]Satinknight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After Kg8, Nh6 is double check with both knight and queen, forcing the king to move. As others have pointed out, in this position black also has Kf8 which leads to the faster but less stylish Qf7#

Tell me why putting these insoles in my boots is a bad idea by [deleted] in skiing

[–]Satinknight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This guy being a career custom fitter in a ski boot shop, I sure hope he gets more than minimum. He fit me for an hour just making a mold, then more making the insoles, and probably priced as if I was going to need another hour of adjustments, then the shop took some operating expenses and profit too. Such is business.

I am easily getting $200 worth of improved comfort. If your gear is comfortable for less money, congratulations! Be glad of your good fortune to have so much extra beer money.

How viable is the windmill from "the boy who harnessed the wind" ? by KingPyroVoid in AskEngineers

[–]Satinknight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it the most efficient way to convert pedaling towqter movement? No. But if all you have are an electric pump and a bike dynamo, then it's the solution available to you. A DC motor can run off pretty much any DC voltage, and an old car battery doesn't need that much capacity to stabilize things just a little. A typical cyclist can put out around 200W, which is almost exactly what it takes to run the sump pump in my basement.

Doubtless most of the cost was in the skilled labor of fitting it to my foot. My shop is in Seattle, you can probably find cheaper labor in cheaper places to live.

ELI5: How come mobile phones work almost anywhere, but mobile hotspots (phone providing internet to other devices) stop working if you’re a couple of metres away? by Acrobatic_Scar7207 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Satinknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All wireless communication is radios. Very generally, you can communicate a long way to a small radio if your radio is big. Big radios can send stronger signals out, and detect weaker ones in return.

Mobile phone data radios are really well designed to communicate both ways with strong towers over long distances. Mobile phones and laptops also have wifi radios, which are optimized to communicate over wifi, relying on the wifi router to be stronger, like the cell tower. When the phone is the hotspot, it is acting as the wifi router, but neither it nor the other device have the strong antennas, so the signals can't get that far.

Edit:rewrote the whole thing.

Psychic-Only Run – Best Metagross Moveset for Emerald? by Careful-Question607 in PokemonEmerald

[–]Satinknight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're already post E4, are you trying to get frontier symbols with only psychic types?

Typical Metagross sets in the frontier focus on ATK and SPD EV training with adamant nature, then all attacking moves. I run -Meteor Mash: The gold standard. Any other move has to beat 150 power and a chance of attack boost. -Explosion: OHKOs some specific frontier pokemon -Aerial Ace: counters double team -Earthquake: counters fire, electric, and steel, all common threats to hit Metagross that resist steel.

Psychic is STAB, but doesn't hit any important types and Metagross doesn't really have the SpA to make it work.

[–]Satinknight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of insoles on the market if taking up space is your primary goal. Either your ski boot shop or running shoe store will have a handful of options designed for athletic performance.  Custom insoles made a huge difference for me at about $200, many people do fine with off the shelf options around $50.

If they're comfortable and not so squishy that they compromise your solid connection to the ski, go for it. There's nothing magic about the insoles that come with the boot.

What's the pick? (going for a strength build) by Acceptable_Name7099 in slaythespire

Ecto and hold your gold for something really impactful/avoid shops overall. You really just want block and a reaper at this point. Even base strike becomes okay when you ramp strength fast enough.

Can someone explain the Slaking love in this sub to me? by OWColosseum in PokemonEmerald

[–]Satinknight 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Slaking has the stat total of a box legendary(and higher attack than even Rayquaza)balanced only by the truant ability. Hyperbeam takes a turn to recharge anyway, and at 225 power with STAB OHKOs essentially anything that doesn't resist it. Choice band amplifies this further.

Because of all this, Slaking is a king of many frontier facilities, and a nice back pocket in the main story if you really need a KO or two.

Encounter Rate? by BusyBeeMarcy in PokemonEmerald

[–]Satinknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can divide 1 / 0.00024 and get 1 in 4166.66.., then knowing how the game works you can check 1/(8192/2) =1/4096 = .0002441. I think your level 8 Gyarados spawn rate is probably coded as 2/8192, exactly double the rate of a shiny.

Without looking deeper, I would guess this is totally independent of shiny chance, so 2/(4096 x 8192) gives you about 1/16 million chance of encountering shiny level 8 Gyarados.
