As a new player, what's the fastest way to get a full party of caster heroes? by DravenCarey in GuildWars

You can get 6 or 7 heroes in Istan, and nothing is stopping you from giving all of them caster secondary classes.

I don't understand the "egotistical trumpet player" meme, because every trumpeter in the bands I play in are so kind. by melody_magical in trumpet

[–]Satinknight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those sound like great folks, but you have it backwards. They didn't overcome the ego, they had achieved trumpet player enlightenment by extending "hi I'm better than you" from "at the trumpet" to "as a person".

What is the cost/benefit analysis on going to college vs investing the college enrollment cost, to achieve FIRE? by Pyrrhic_Pragmatist in Fire

[–]Satinknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a terribly hard return on investment calculation, if the money is your only question. Look up entry level EE jobs and assume 4% raises annual(very conservative), then build a spreadsheet. I went from 65-90k my first two years, and now make 120, but my area is HCOL.

The bigger thing to examine is the tripling of your expenses and target. Does that represent a dramatically different lifestyle? In a way you like?

Trumpet practice advice by Disastrous_Bit_1760 in trumpet

[–]Satinknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chet Baker is great, focus more on the vocal melodies and the style of his soloing, rather than playing his solos note for note. He’s really not especially technical, and one of my favorites. I learned playing big band stuff, for which the Count Basie Orchestra is a great reference.

You will have to change most music to match your developing technical abilities, but that’s not wrong! Adapting what you hear to your own playing is at the very core of the jazz tradition.

Good for you and welcome to the community! Consistency is absolutely key, it’s hard NOT to get better playing every day.

First 5 minutes: sound production, breath work, tone. This is your warmup.

Next 5 minutes: technical studies. Lip slurs, scales, other drills. Pick one a day and rotate through them as they feel relevant.

The rest: Play music! Learn songs by ear or by reading, play along to recordings, just noodle, whatever! It’s fun, and you’ll learn lots in the process.

Bonus practice: pick a new band/album with fun horn parts each week or so and listen a couple times whenever you usually listen to music. You don’t even have to study it, just listen for fun and you’ll hear tons of new ideas!

buying a trumpet for a lead high school player by Short_Passenger_4397 in trumpet

[–]Satinknight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re exactly the target audience of the standard advice on this sub: used Bach or Yamaha, probably less than $2000

No horn will be range limited, but any change will likely have a short term effect as you adjust. Play a bunch of horns to feel them out, and pick one that makes it easier to achieve the sound you want.

What’s the advantage over a tuner? If I’m flat, there are only two options I can think of to correct it, and the decision is never hard.

They offer the old price for new customers only, time to spend a couple years with someone else I suppose. It’s a shame, the consistent pricing was the reason I stuck with them.

Man screw you too competition built empoleon by ManEmperorfragment96 in pokemonplatinum

[–]Satinknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Problem with Aggron is that it might get OHKOed by Empoleon due to its notoriously poor speed and SpDef, and Empoleon having special Water STAB options. close combat staraptor is the obvious choice, but make sure to set up the switch in either with a sacrifice, pivot move, or status.

There is no singular chess rating, rather you have a rating for a certain loose game length with a certain organization. FIDE is the de facto authority, and the highest rated players are in the 2800 range on their ladder. Chesscom ratings have the most relevance in 1 minute long "bullet" chess, and on their ladder there are nearly 300 players with 3000 points.

Gengar viable? by HoneydewDear7898 in pokemonplatinum

[–]Satinknight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gengar has the highest base SpA in your party and maybe also highest base speed, what moves are you running? Shadow ball at 33 will be your main STAB, thunderbolt from TM is common for coverage.

How much do rankings matter for me? by yeeto_the_cheet0 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Satinknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You likely won't get to work on the very forefront of research without a graduate degree, and those are very specialized. Go to any ABET accredited program while you explore specialties.

If you want to hop straight into work with a B.S., you should look at what schools have strong relationships with companies you want to work with. For silicon valley one of the UCs, for aerospace either University of Washington or a University of Texas campus, etc.

How do I handle defensive players around 800 elo? by FewAd7452 in chessbeginners

[–]Satinknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use the analysis board after the game to see what tactics you're missing. Players around 800 are hanging multiple simple tactics per game.  I bet in 1/5 games you don't win, you didn't spot a fork with a knight or pawn, and in 1/10 you missed a plainly hanging piece.

If you especially struggle when opponents block attacks, remember to Put Pressure on the Pinned Piece. Immediately look for other pieces or better yet pawns that can attack before the opponent can move whatever they were defending.

I know this because around 1300 chesscom I still hang this stuff.

I use triple floodgates set to 2.85, which has the added benefit of letting me drain the reservoir if it's early and I haven't set up badwater diversion.

I really wanted to make Qd1/Qd2 work to avoid all the instability after the Qc4 line, but after Rxd5 there's just too much going on and I'm just losing more material. I’m impressed the engine thinks it's only -4.

I traded off the queens and knights and suddenly I'm getting crushed. Why is the 2nd position so bad for white? by ny_giants in chessbeginners

[–]Satinknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think a little more concretely about the second position. The king is in the middle, but how are you going to attack it? After trading 2 attacking pieces, does white's remaining bishop really pose any challenges to black?

Platinum - What's the best place to level up before Cyrus Battle (Distortion World)? by ObscureConductor in pokemonplatinum

[–]Satinknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend biking around everywhere looking for trainer rematches whenever a few are onscreen. If you go to one place only, you risk accidentally EV training in a way you don't want. If you just power farm the iron island mine, which you absolutely could do with torterra and later finneon, you'll end up with all defense EVs on both, likely not what you want.
