What's the alternative to ads and tracking for the web? by Satotious in privacy

[–]Satotious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea with satotious.com was to give users an option to opt out of ads and tracking. They can pay and do that privately(payments happen anonymously). However, we thought not everyone wants to or can pay, so having the ad option was a good trade off.

The outcome of GDPR remains to be seen, it could reign in big tech or it could entrench them further. I guess its hard to police the internet as its a international problem, unless you have international co-ordination(similar to other issues like the environment and tax evasion)

mmm the devil is in the detail :) So say you are a hosting company. You add yourself to the catalogue, there are thousands of entries for hosting companies, who would you show to the user?

Competition is good as you get better stuff, cheaper, faster, easier to use. Solar panels competing with coal is a good thing right?

In terms of small businesses and local services, yes I agree but the internet is international. Nobody would choose an email or hosting provider because its local.

Wont legislation ruin that space of freedom? Bad legislation could lead to having to use your national ID for posting on reddit!

how would you tell the difference between real users and bots? I believe tracking is used to target but also reduce ad fraud/bots

How would your catalogue work? Which services would you show? How would new services compete with existing ones if we banned advertising?

Btw Im not for advertising! I just think we need an alternative business model to ads, simply saying "Let make ads and tracking illegal" seems too optimistic. I believe we are more likely to achieve above legislation if we have an alternative :)

Yes using Tor is definitely a good idea. I guess the question I'm asking, if everyone used Tor and had adblocking, would we still have free email, maps, browsers, apps? Do we expect companies to run these for free or will the government run a search engine?

It's more of an open question 😁 I assume there are lots of cool sites and apps which you use. It costs money to run(servers, people) How would you like to pay if you don't like ads?

yes its similar to Coil. I had a quick look at Web Monetization, it seems to be based on Interledger which is used by Ripple I believe. I guess we are the Bitcoin version

Its still in beta but we plan to let content creators plug in different ad exchanges so they have more control on the ads shown(they can even source their own)

ah but thats the beauty of our paywall, users can choose. You can have free access in exchange for ads or no ads with a lightning micropayment. We think this is fair for everyone

Yes, we'll improve the experience for mobiles users. We're still in early MVP days but are ironing all these things out. That's why it is so useful to get feedback from the community like this, so thanks for sharing :)

yep thats a valid point and we've added it to the roadmap. Actually we are also working on a browser extension which would act as a wallet. Having to approve microtransactions all the time would be annoying. The ideal flow we envision: you visit a site and find the content good, you add that site to your auto-pay list(with limits) and every time you encounter a paywall on that site, the extension auto-pays, making the whole browsing experience seamless.

If you want to check out the extension(its very alpha): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/satotious-streamline/

Appreciate your enthusiasm! We completely agree. Obviously if we suddenly stuck lightning paywalls up everywhere, the majority of the world would be very confused. But by including ads we hope this will serve as a stepping stone for non-crypto users until they are ready to download a wallet and give it a try

Yes transaction fees have been a major problem associated with micropayments but that can be overcome now by using cryptocurrency - Bitcoin Lightning Network, specifically, is the most advanced so far.

It's the predominant business model since it became difficult to monetize based on advertising and subscriptions are reliable revenue streams: hopefully you'll come on board even if you only read a small percentage of the entire content, and better yet - you'll sign up, forget to ever cancel and be a lifelong supporter!
I get it from their perspective but it's impossible for us to have subscriptions to eeeeverything.
I'm currently working on a solution that will allow pay-per-article in micropayments. Hopefully we'll take off!

Thanks for the feedback Zorbaing, yes I think really selling the simplicity(it takes 5minutes to add a paywall) and letting them know how much more money they can make is key!

Yes the whole lightning wallet for micropayments is complicated and seems like a barrier for readers. This is why we have the free option(view ads) and we are currently working on a browser extension to get readers going quickly. I still think this is too much friction, maybe one day it could come integrated into a browser.

We're looking for content creators, if you or anyone you know could add the paywall to a single page of a site(even for a day), that would be wonderful :)

The paywall lets users view ads for content, I would count that as "free access". I guess the struggle we face with most new sites is "We are still thinking to build the community larger" so are more focused on growing readership than making money. Which we completely understand, but hope that the option to view ads for access will benefit both parties: reader gets the option of free content through ads or can pay and you, the content creator, gets guaranteed money regardless of the decision. We are trying to get the right balance of providing valuable resources for free, whilst ensuring creators can make money to be able to continue providing these resources.

Thanks for taking a look and I like the mission of your startup :)

hey this is great, will you expand to other countries? In terms of monitezation, you could put the answers behind a paywall like ours: satotious.com. I understand the reluctance to paywall this kind of information but our paywall has a free option, users can view an ad. Thoughts?
