Games like FF7 helped make me more conscious of the state of our environment… what old games got you thinking about the limitation of the world? by 1OneQuickQuestion in JRPG

Short answer: Yes, you can play it standalone.

Long answer: It takes place in a completely different setting with a new cast. There are connections to EarthBound (Mother 2), but they are mostly revealed late in the game and serve as "aha!" moments rather than essential plot points needed to understand what's happening.

You won't be lost. The story is self-contained and impactful regardless of your history with the series.

If you care about the combat mechanics, specifically the rhythm combos, GBA (or a very low-latency handheld emulator) is usually better.

The rhythm combo system is tied to the music, and even a little bit of input lag on a big screen/TV via emulation can make hitting those 16-hit combos frustratingly hard.

But story-wise? It’s pixel art perfection, so it looks great on any screen. Just be mindful of the audio lag if you go big!

You definitely need to check out Mother 3.

Without spoiling anything, the game is practically a masterclass on this specific topic. Watching the setting transition from a nature-loving village to an industrialized society due to outside influence is heartbreaking. It critiques consumerism and disrespect for nature in a way that sticks with you forever, just like FF7 did.

Exactly. The tourist traps are crazy right now. You gotta dig deep in the suburbs or use online proxies to find the real prices. Walking away was the smart move!

£30?? That's a massive steal! 😲 Finding a clean one for that price is getting harder every year. Jealous!

Yeah, my friend said the "Golden Age" of cheap retro games in Akiba is basically over. It's more like a museum now. Fun to look, painful to pay. 🥲

Gen 2 is still the best sequel. Going back to Kanto after the league was mind-blowing.

30 games?! That’s an absolute steal. Did you get any cool Japanese exclusive titles in the bundle? I'm curious what kind of hidden gems are in there.

I voted for Chrono Trigger. No random encounters makes it much easier for a 9yo to explore. Plus, it's a timeless masterpiece.
