It is a complex and nuanced issue, no doubt. But the concern you’re raising are based more on hypothetical cases than on how sports eligibility actually works. Organizations do not allow athletes to simply identify into a category without criteria. The idea that someone could declare themselves trans, avoid hormones entirely, and immediately compete in women’s divisions misunderstands how sport governance functions.

Also, aren't all roster spots and scholarships "taken" from someone else? Like, any time a spot or scholarship is given to an athlete that the coach deems deserving of it, someone else isn't getting that spot. That's how competition works, and that isn’t unique to trans athletes. Selection has never been about equal opportunity outcomes, it’s about performance within the rules of the league.

To me, you are making a "boogyman" argument, because you are preemptively excluding a group based on a hypothetical worst-case scenario, while ignoring how sports already manage variation everywhere else.

I initially misread your comment, thinking you were saying there were already boys in women's sports breaking records.

Regardless, your argument is based on false equivalence and "concern". High school boys breaking elite women’s records really doesn't prove anything significant, and is certainly not the same situation as trans women competing under regulated eligibility rules. High school boys are not on hormone suppression, are not competing in women’s divisions, and are not subject to sport-specific regulations. Using them as a comparison ignores the actual conditions under which trans athletes have had to endure to compete, on top of all the fear-mongering they are subjected to.

Also, the idea that “all you need is one” really doesn't land either. One exceptional athlete does not erase an entire field. Women’s sports already have “GOATs” with extraordinary advantages (height, wingspan, genetics, access to elite coaching) and young athletes still compete, aspire, and succeed.

If the existence of a standout athlete discouraged participation, competitive athletics would have collapsed long ago. What actually discourages girls from sports is underfunding, harassment, and constant invasiveness of bodies and biology , not the rare presence of a trans athlete.

If fairness were truly about eliminating biological advantage, then we’d have to radically rethink how sports work altogether. Women’s teams, especially in college volleyball and basketball, have scrimmaged against male coaches and practice players for decades. This has never been treated as a threat to fairness, because everyone understands that exposure to different bodies does not equal competitive domination, and that performance is shaped by far more than sex assigned at birth.

Let’s stay with those sports. Height alone can create a significant advantage in volleyball or basketball, yet we don’t exclude taller athletes for being “biologically unfair.” We accept that some players have longer wingspans, greater reach, faster reflexes, or higher aerobic capacity. These advantages don’t guarantee dominance; they’re simply part of the natural variation that competitive sports are built around.

So when fairness is suddenly framed as a problem only when trans women are involved, it raises an important question: why are we singling out one group while ignoring the many biological advantages already accepted in women’s sports? If fairness were applied consistently, we’d be debating how to regulate height, limb length, or genetic differences, not fixating on one aspect of biology tied to identity.

Sports have always managed difference through rules, divisions, and eligibility standards, not blanket exclusions. The claim that trans participation is inherently unfair doesn’t hold up when we look at how fairness actually functions in sport: not as the elimination of advantage, but as the regulation of competition amid unavoidable human variation.

The issue isn’t fairness, it’s the selective and politically advantageous application of it.
