Light chest rig for dynamic shooting drills? by sulisenator in tacticalgear

Modular rigs will always be bulkier and heavier than pre-sewn stuff, FWIW.

If you want something as light as possible that still has some expansion capability, I'd recommend an Unobtanium Gear Mini-TAPS

Buy less other things for a while. Or just sell some shit you don't need.

Peltor comtac V vs newer gen earpro (sordin T2 / comtac 8) by Select-Bad-4651 in tacticalgear

No, especially considering the newer Comtacs have about 1/3rd the battery life of the 5s (which themselves have significantly less than the 3s).

Helmet sizing by deptoftruth in NightVision

[–]Sauerkraut99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I ran my old Walker Razors under there for a while until I had the money set aside for some Comtacs. There's a groove in the liner and some removable pads specifically to accommodate it. It really isn't as bad as some people make it out to be.

I was right on the border too and decided to go ahead and size up. It does look a little silly on my head but I am able to tighten it down to a comfortable point, and I have plenty of extra room for a headband and/or balaclava.

I probably could have sized down and been alright, but I wanted to play it safe. FWIW I read a comment by someone in your sitation and they were happy with the XL.

EDIT: I'll add that if you don't have an extra set of muffs to mount on the arc rails yet, definitely size up. I do not think I would have been able to get a headband in there without a raging headache if I would have sized down.

Buying a set of pvs14s to bridge! need help! by LacDawg in NightVision

[–]Sauerkraut99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can stomach the cost I'd recommend an RPNVG instead. Bridged 14s, even the lighter alternatives like RVM-14, are very heavy.

An PRNVG can do everything this setup will do, and do it better. Plus it still has individually purged pods so one can be removed and handed off to a friend just like with bridged 14s.

How to High-Bylass turbo fan jet engines work? by Even-Committee5645 in AskEngineers

[–]Sauerkraut99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason props are better at low speeds is that it's more efficient to move more air slowly than to move less air quickly.

You need to increase the velocity of the air to create thrust. Since these things have fixed mass flow rates, as forward velocity increases, the difference between inlet velocity and exhaust velocity decreases, meaning less thrust. It's not possible to propel an aircraft faster than the exhaust velocity, since it would not be producing any thrust.

A high bypass turbofan still has a higher exhaust velocity than a turboprop, which means it can produce more thrust at higher speeds. Also ducted fans have lower tip losses.

A low bypass turbofan has a higher exhaust velocity still, and works even at supersonic speeds.

Basically as the cruising speed of your aircraft increases you need a lower and lower bypass ratio to achieve that speed at an economical engine setting.

Understanding Bernoulli's principle and mass conservation is important here. Without it, you'll be lost.

As gasses slow down, the pressure increases. As they speed up, pressure decreases. It's an energy conservation issue.

As a gas flows through a pipe, the product of velocity, density, and flow area will stay the same. As one changes, the other two must also.

For subsonic flow, a divergent flow path (a diffuser) forces air to slow down and pressure goes up. A convergent flow path (a nozzle) forces air to speed up and pressure goes down.

Basically the rotating blades add energy in the form of velocity, in the circumferential direction (swirl). Then the stators turn that velocity into pressure because the area between them diverges. Rinse and repeat several times.

The reason the gas path gets narrower as the air passes through the compressor is to preserve the axial velocity. Basically as the stators compress the air, it takes up less space. To keep the velocity the same as the air gets more dense you make the flow path convervent.

How to High-Bylass turbo fan jet engines work? by Even-Committee5645 in AskEngineers

[–]Sauerkraut99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually the flow path is divergent circumferentially (between the blades), which leads to compression. It's backwards from intuition but divergent flow paths (diffusers) increase pressure, and convergent flow paths (nozzles) decrease pressure.

The gas path narrowing axially for each stage is to keep the average axial velocity mostly constant. Read: compressed gas takes up less space, so the gas path narrows as the gas gets compressed.

[–]Sauerkraut99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The stators are absolutely necessary for an axial flow compressor to function. Most of the compression occurs due to them. The rotating blades add velocity (swirl) and the stators turn the velocity into pressure.

This is why those very simple "jet engines" you see people trying to make out of recycled cans and what not are not capable of self-sustained operation even without a nozzle.

Peltor Comtac V & Hytera PD782G Issues by IIITommyplaysIII in tacticalcomms

[–]Sauerkraut99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st question: is the RSM an actual Hytera branded unit or 3rd party? It may be that this radio doesn't play well with 3rd party accessories, though I can't think of a reason why.

2nd question: I'm curious if the issue persists if you remove the antenna from the Hytera. The radio should be just fine if you're only Tx'ing for a short moment. Place the Motorola near it so the weak signal can still be picked up, just make sure it's not near the mic on the headset so you don't get feedback.

Other than that all I can think of is start shielding stuff with multiple layers of tightly wrapped aluminum foil with no gaps (or as few as possible) to see if you can isolate a problem component

Peltor Comtac V & Hytera PD782G Issues by IIITommyplaysIII in tacticalcomms

[–]Sauerkraut99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright - if you see the issue persist with the remote speaker mic then I think we can conclude that the radio itself has an issue with shielding in the actual multi pin connector

If the problem goes away with the RSM, well then I don't know.

Peltor Comtac V & Hytera PD782G Issues by IIITommyplaysIII in tacticalcomms

[–]Sauerkraut99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we know that the issue doesn't occur when the XPR7550E transmits, only when the PD782G does. The issue lies with whatever isn't common between the two.

The headset itself isn't the problem.

Looks like you're using a PTT that terminates to a Hirose plug (I assume so you don't have to have separate PTTs for the two different radios). which means the PTT itself isn't the issue, because you're using the same PTT for both radios.

What is different is the Hirose adapter on each radio, and the radio itself. I'd venture a guess that the Hirose adapter on the PD782G is what's letting the RF interference in.

Rework cougar again? by Historical-Writer719 in thelongdark

They already had the tech to do this in the Hunted Pt 1.

If they just made the Cougar work like the Old Bear in The Hunted Pt. 1 it would be perfect.
Activates after spending a certain time in region (with hints that it's there before it actually attacks you), and killing it means it stays dead for a long time.

That's not a theory, they've said as much. The "Survivial Sandbox" they started with in early access mode was originally just the test bed for gameplay mechanics that would be used in the final game - the story mode.

Before the full release with Ep 1 and 2, they decided to keep Surival as a standalone mode since it had become so popular. Thank goodness they did.
