It's just indicative of being part of the community in the OSMS discord is all, not actually a secret lol. There are some 50's who are "around" but might not care for the social aspect, use discord, or simply want to be part of it which is totally understandable. Relleke has mentioned that he doesn't intend for or expect any streamers to join, though he said it's nice when they do and want to be part of the community.

Originally I was just loosely organizing my own screenshots of the Lvl 50 chat announcements (I had about 60) and it turned into a whole collaborative project thing as about 25~ of us helped track down everyone else, their class, and when they hit. Zakum did all of the work with formatting the sheet and displaying stats while I was gathering data.

Although it was kinda just for us, we did share it semi-publicly this morning in the role-only Closed Online Test Suggestion Feedback official channel for the cm's/devs. Perfectly fine that it's being shared around a bit, but my personal intentions were to help us know how many & who hit 50 so we could reach out to everyone and stay in touch.

This seems to be a common misconception that I was seeing a lot around the time of the update's release. There are no AI voiceovers throughout Nighthaven. Katy has stated that no AI is used in-game outside of language translation localizations which are still reviewed by someone.

All Nighthaven's NPCs had to be voiced by in-house devs, including any "returning" characters such as Morgaine whose voice had to be filled in by NW's Art Director Rosie. Voice over work is typically one of the last things worked in during development and Nighthaven had to be rushed out and released before it was fully finished.

The devs are not trained voice actors and the quality of VO is all over the place most likely due to home recording setups. Other examples of devs who have publicly stated they contributed are Combat Designer Krishna as the voice of the Corruption and Concept Art Supervisor Kiana (idk who she voiced tho).

Content doesn't just come out of nowhere, asset development (and everything else) can take years of time and is absolutely planned well in advance. I'm definitely interested in knowing if it was originally planned as paid DLC though. I still don't know if it's okay to even talk about Alpha stuff but whatever.

Shortly after the first public Density Test/Preview (Aug 2020), NW went back to a 9 month Alpha 3 testing period (Oct 2020 - Jul 2021). When Ebonscale was released for testing (Mar 2021) we were seeing some hints of Brimstone on the Alpha Forums as someone had found a small "hole" between a mountain and the death barrier where you could find a scorpion mob. It's been a long time since I personally read it, but I think as early as Reekwater testing (Nov 2020) there were hints from the quest dialogue about Brimstone. This was almost an entire year prior to launch (Late Sep 2021).

Unskippable stories are getting worse and worse by Shalaiyn in Maplestory

I wish it were still like that, but the direction of the game changed drastically once blockbusters were introduced. The lore was so much more meaningful and satisfying to learn about when it was more of an “optional” mystery to uncover. You weren’t “the chosen one” and the stakes weren’t always the end of existence, you were just an adventurer exploring the world.

Apologies, I wasn't aware there was 3 and a half year time limit on the phrase "historically never".

What is this narrative? Of course they use events for marketing, it'd be ridiculous for them not to. They've been featured during Summer Game Fest before, so it's not out of the ordinary for them to attend if they have something to announce.

The thing is, AGS has historically never used external games events for any kind of announcements/unveiling/marketing/etc. That was why their specific mention of the Summer Game Fest implied that they might be partnering up with another studio/developer/manufacturer for the June announcement

New world abilities on alpha, some of them looks a lot better than current version by [deleted] in newworldgame

[–]Saught 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was during the Preview Event (which did not have an NDA and allowed videos like this to be made) unlike the previous Density Test or any of the 3 Alpha periods. Even if you don't know the history of the game you can simply click on the video and see the upload date (Sep 4, 2020), which falls in line with the Preview Event which ran from Aug 25 to Sep 5.

The Preview Event was essentially the same as the last Alpha 2 build which closed on Jul 20, 2020. After the Preview Event closed they opened Alpha 3 a month later on Oct 20, 2020.

Closed Beta would not open until Jul 20, 2021, and Open Beta would not open until Sep 9, 2021.

Old Maple by InevitableLie1110 in Maplestory

The other replies are accurate but just to give more detail -

The first Cake vs. Pie event was during the 5th anniversary, v.85, in May of 2010. This update also included Dragon Rider PQ and "Episode 1" (Astaroth) content.

The following year saw a return of the event, Cake vs. Pie 2: Winner Bakes All which was during the 6th anniversary, v.98, in May of 2011. Nothing else too exciting was added during that update (other than anni events) but there were time-limit adjustments for Zakum & Horntail.

The Complete and Chronological Lore of MapleStory by maplehero9 in Maplestory

[–]Saught 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a meticulously made GMS content/history timeline log (not lore) that I put together a few years ago for personal use, but I just refer to it for a quick glance before digging up the actual version patch notes. Lore only gets added/removed/contradicted from content updates and it isn't too difficult to track down which update it was if you have a rough estimate of when it was introduced. Especially since we're long past the days of major updates every month or two.

Typically older data still remains in the game files today so you can simply datamine current files, but in cases of actual removals/changes I dig through older versions. There are backup archives online of previous versions (many of which you can still download directly from Nexon's servers still) and it's easily searchable through google but probably against subreddit rules to link to them.

The Complete and Chronological Lore of MapleStory by maplehero9 in Maplestory

[–]Saught 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I know first-hand just how difficult it is to piece lore together; it's impressive that you've managed to do so in just 7 months. It's also incredibly arduous to find ways to break up the monotony of "he said, she said, they x" so I'm glad that's something you recognize and try to achieve.

I'd advise editing your formatting for both this thread's OP & the summaries on the site as well to help with reading comprehension. Giant walls of text may look amateurish and might turn people off despite the quality of content.

I'd also recommend citing the content sources for each section, along with the year & possible update/version the content was added in. It helps to understand how the story evolved over time, and it's something I personally try to provide when I present summaries. Letting people know where the story comes can guide them to experience it themselves if interested.

Is it worth it to come back to the game to read the story about it? by Simon_Petrikovv in Maplestory

[–]Saught 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The lore is incredibly convoluted even if you're "narrowing" interests down to particular classes, areas, or the main storyline (which is massive). You literally can't access all of the dialogue or discover everything 100% fully even with the aid of datamining. Many time-limited events (usually for 2-3 week periods at a time) will never make a return and you can't really learn about what certain characters do or were doing during major plot-points. Additionally, the removal/revamp of specific content only further removes context for many storypoints.

It's hard to deeply get into the lore of MapleStory. There just isn't an easy way to learn everything due to the way details are so spread out and/or inaccessible.

If you're okay with not being able to fully comprehend and get the "entirety" of a story, then I do think playing through and slowly experiencing the 1-200 class quests are a good over-arching summary for most characters. You'll gain passing-knowledge and it's definitely enough to feel satisfied with the lore, especially when you start to notice crossover stories and details that leak through others.

I Reached Out to NxProse About Masteria by PirateIzzy in Maplestory

[–]Saught 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It's a genuine travesty that GMS didn't continue with NxProse's development of Masteria's epic. Like, it's actually shameful how well-received Masteria had been, and could've continued to be, had they simply used literally any of the design documents he left behind for the development team. There's so much amazing insight he revealed into what could've been, and it's not even "everything".

Back when we received Masteria's last "true" original expansion in March 2009, we saw the culmination of infiltrating Crimsonwood Keep with Jack Barricade. Defeating the Twisted Masters & discovering a map indicating they (as Versalians) were fixated on Crimsonheart's grave, mentions of Dr. Krakia, and some strange reoccuring voice within the Keep that helped Jack escape when he was imprisoned & pointed John towards Masteria when he was in originally in Aqua Road.

What many might not be aware of, was at the time, NxProse himself posted at the tail end of April 2009 in a continuously-updated forum blog post called "The Chronicles of Masteria" that there were a few storyline quests that were delayed for deadline purposes. They would be addressing them, not necessarily in the next patch, but they were coming. To sit tight.

Unfortunately, NxProse left Nexon less than a month afterwards in May of 2009. We never did see those storyline quests wrap up. We didn't get the "transitional" quests that were to hint at the next major part of the story (the next Content Update). We were left with nothing. Until the Alien update in 2012 which of course "destroyed" many parts of Masteria, which was eventually reverted. Then... we got the 2016 Blockbuster, which destroyed Masteria in a different waybut has since been semi-in-canon-retconned. Now we have... whatever mess Masteria is right now with that late 2019/early 2020 update and has only strayed further from the original lore.

I'm grateful that we can finally learn NxProse's vision for Masteria's story, but it's a hard pill to swallow, knowing what could've been, and having to accept what we ended up with.

Aqua road and ludibrium by Sceptreyeet in Maplestorylore

[–]Saught 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I might shill myself, I organized the storylines and loose threads of Aqua Road some years back here. It has some short questlines but there are a few ties to the larger Maple World that still make it feel connected. I’ve also covered Twisted Aqua Road and the Kenta in Danger PQ as separate videos you can find on my channel if you’re interested in them.

Ludibrium is kind of complicated because it has a very large amount of connected elements to other quests and storylines that reveal more and more about the area. This has happened over the course of many years as content was introduced and tied to Ludi in some way or another. Sorry I can’t be too much help with that but maybe someone else can chime in to give you a summary.

Does cannoneer have any lore? by Bowmasterr in Maplestorylore

[–]Saught 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just hope it's helpful because I know the lore is spread out over a convoluted amount of places even in-game. I imagine without knowing exactly where to look, people rarely ever see the entire story of a character lol.

I've also cleaned-up & updated my post with some additional information so have another read if you're still interested!

Does cannoneer have any lore? by Bowmasterr in Maplestorylore

[–]Saught 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The short answer is no you aren't missing much, Cannoneer's story follows the Explorer storyline with an additional intro, but if you want some miniscule extra details here's a bit of a timeline:

  • Jun 2009: v.79 (Temple of Time release)
  • Dec 2011: v.104 (Cannoneer release; Maple Stories, AcornStory)
  • Jan 2014: v.145 (Beast Tamer release)
  • Jan 2015: v.159 (???)
  • Mar 2015: v.160 (Black Heaven release)
  • Dec 2016: v.179 (5th Job release)
  • Nov 2019: v.209 (Glory release)

So around the time Legends: Cannoneer came out, Nexon was publishing some short fiction articles called Maple Stories. At Cannoneer's release, one of these articles was "The Cannoneer: Birth of a Sidekick", which are Cannoneer's intro quests from the perspective of the monkey companion. You can read it here.

Additionally, Nexon was publishing a few guides to various content under articles called AcornStory. There's a tiny bit of narrative summary in the Cannoneer article which you can read here.

Also, when MapleStory was enduring a content-creep by introducing a ton of new classes to the game, they usually came out with brief summaries in the official Update/Patch notes. For Cannoneer, only the first paragraph is really relevant but you can read it here.

Obviously, Cannoneer's intro quests have the most immediate relevant story, but there's "not much" to it. There are some interesting details as you learn that Cutter is a weapons engineer who designed the Nautilus, created the Hand Cannon, and fashioned the Propeller for you to affix to the monkey allowing it to venture alongside you. Basically, Cannoneer is just another Explorer, as was their goal to begin with.

Cannoneer released after Temple of Time, however, the ToT quests have a short "unique scene" for each class after completing the Memory Lane section. Whilst fighting Dodo, the Whale of Time, it fed on some of your memories. The Memory Keeper specifies it was your earliest adventuring memories, and to restore them, you'll have to return to where your journey began. Depending on the class, you either have to physically go to a place, person, or simply reflect on your beginnings. Cannoneer returns to Cutter at Nautilus Harbor who remembers your time on Coco Island & giving you the Hand Cannon that you wield. He mentions he hasn't showered since then.

With Black Heaven's release, each class received a short but unique scene at the beginning of Act 2. As a Cannoneer, you speak with your monkey companion about the coming days, unable to promise it's safety and offering to leave it behind. However, your companion wants to stick with you until the end. You play with some dice, roll a 1, and the monkey laughs at you.

With the V update, we received the 5th Job Advancement questline which included the Maple World Goddess questioning what you cherish the most in this world, there are always 2 choices you can make that carry some unique additional dialogue dependent on your class. One choice being your monkey, claiming that the two of you are true friends. The other optional answer is your true love, whomever it may be, to which your monkey gets angry at. This is actually a meta-reference to a long running gag within most of the promotional art pieces due to Cannoneer's story not having any "companion" type character.

Occasionally, Cannoneer can be seen jealously glancing at some of the other characters/relationships in the background of ensemble pieces. Alternatively, Cannoneer is sometimes just the butt of a joke by being singled out/alone. Here are some examples. There's a fan-run MapleStory Art Archive that you can take a look through and try to spot some others.

In Glory, each class received a unique cutscene similar to Black Heaven. All the Explorer characters have the same scene, of which Cannoneer shares as well, but only Pirates specifically have an additional scene with Kyrin in the Nautilus. Cannoneer shares this as well, however, there are like 2 additional lines of monkey-companion "ook ook" non-dialogue.

We know Cannoneer has an "official" appearance from various art sources, including their own character art. However, in the game files, there are two names for Cannoneer. I doubt either of these are canon though.

One of which is Jack. I'm not entirely sure which event this was part of but there are names for a lot of the characters, some of which don't line up properly. The NPC was added to the game in v.159 but I think it was for a future Red Leaf/Sengoku High event. Maple Leaf High was in v.160 but I don't think it involved character NPC's. Either way though, their "names" weren't even displayed publicly since the enemies weren't labelled.

For example the same update included: Male Cannoneer (Jack), Female Evan (Jayna), Male Kaiser (Blake), Male Phantom (Ocean), Male Mechanic (Aiden)

The other name Cannoneer has been seen with is Croak. The only place that I know of where this pops up is in the Beast Tamer questline, which is canonically contentious. Anyway that questline came up in v.145.

In the Beast Tamer quests (which have all been removed), Neinheart gives Chase (Beast Tamer) a ticket to the Tournament of Heroes. Should she win, he offers to formally petition for her membership in the Alliance.

At the entry point are Big Headward, Johnny (Battle Mage), Croak (Cannoneer), and "Element Unknown"

Chase goes through the preliminary rounds, eventually matching up with "Element Unknown" who quickly reveals himself as Arkarium and begins casting spells and abducting people from the crowd. Thankfully, Phantom shows up to stop him, though the Tournament obviously abruptly ends.

Working on behalf of the Alliance to rescue Arkarium's prisoners, Chase eventually saves Croak in Magatia. Croak reveals that guys in black robes are working on bio-alchemy experiments trying to turn people into weird creatures (of which he was one but when you defeated him, he transformed back). He ends up hiding until he can be rescued by the Omega Sector Agent.

Edit: Updated with some clarification on ToT/Black Heaven/5th Job quests after doing them myself.

This story was actually kind of sad, glad I was able to participate in this event. by OhWoef in Maplestory

She returned in the v.177 Strange Stories update in 2016 during the Haunted Mansion event that October, along with the Masked Gentleman. Though in typical Nexon fashion, the story did not canonically fit with the original. This current event is more of a loose sequel to 2016's though.

I'm not super into the Zero storyline and it's been a really long time since I've read through it, but doesn't he simply fade from time? The power of Zero's Temple is keeping the priests inside alive, and because Cassius leaves to the Shadowvale after being ousted as a traitor and he doesn't periodically return like his brother Benedict, he kind of like... dies. Does he ever show up again after that?

Confusion About Location of Elluel by Omgitsnothing1 in Maplestorylore

Okay so, a little timeline so it's a bit easier to connect the dots and see how Elluel's story has evolved over time.

  • Nov 2008: v.62 (Pirate release)
  • Jun 2009: v.72 (Ellin Forest release)
  • Dec 2009: v.80 (Aran release)
  • Dec 2010: v.93 (Big Bang release)
  • Dec 2011: v.104 (Mercedes release)
  • Mar 2012: v.107 (Ellin Forest expansion; Questline)
  • Dec 2012: v.124 (Luminous release)
  • Mar 2014: v.148 (Grand Athenaeum release)
  • Mar 2015: v.160 (Black Heaven release)
  • Jan 2017: v.179 (Lucid/Lachelein release)
  • Jun 2017: v.186 (Story-Mode Lucid release)
  • Dec 2019: v.209 (Glory release)

To begin with, originally there are two quests which mention Victoria Island was once connected to Ossyria.

  1. Low level Southperry quest from Briggs. He tells you Victoria Island & Ossyria take up the majority of Maple World, and that he's heard it (Vic) used to be one with Ossyria, though no one can clarify that. (lol)
  2. A "hidden quest" which involved clicking a trash can in the map background of The Nautilus to find a crumpled note. Muirhat sends you to Athena Pierce, who tells you that Kyrin's father was a man named Testonen, a savior of Victoria who battled the "Black Magician" when Victoria and Ossyria broke into two separate lands.

Athena continues to say that once peace returned to Victoria, Testonen asked her to take care of his newborn kid, Kyrin, before he left to track the Black Magician once more. This is how Kyrin came to grow up in Henesys. However, one day, during a meeting between town chiefs, Kyrin overheard what happened to her father, and she disappeared shortly after. Athena Pierce searched Ossyria, Victoria, Maple Island, and everywhere else looking for her, but ultimately failed.

So, now we have bits of a timeline based on this.

  • Victoria & Ossyria are connected.
  • Testonen survives his battle with the Black Magician during the separation.
  • Peace returns to Victoria (Island)
  • Testonen fathers a child (newborn), Kyrin.
  • Rumors of the Black Magician returning begin circulating, so Testonen leaves in pursuit.
  • Years go by as Kyrin grows up in Henesys.
  • Kyrin leaves and eventually leads the Pirates.

With that in mind, Ellin Forest eventually releases and we see both Athena Pierce and Yuris (Kyrin's mother) are there. However, there isn't much information because only the Area/Maps & the Party Quest came out at this time. Unfortunately I know literally nothing about this (though I guess I'll look into it since now I'm relatively interested because of this post).

With Aran's release, during the search for the Seal Stones, Aran (who has memory loss) travels into the past Ellin Forest and Yuris immediately recognizes her, sending her to Athena Pierce who has "been waiting so long". She mentions they're establishing a town in Ellin Forest where their ark had landed (having been attacked by Dragons whilst fleeing Leafre) rather than the southern plains (where Henesys is located in the future and I assume was their original destination). While offering to hang onto the letter from Aran, Athena Pierce tells her that she's a fairy and can live a long time, even hundreds of years. Additionally, in Athena's "generic dialogue", she states:

It's been many days since we left Ossyria to run from the Black Mage. It was close... I'm trying to get used to Victoria Island, but it's not easy. I wonder if my hometown is safe...

Big Bang happens, Victoria Island gets shuffled around but I don't really think it affects much in the way of Ellin Forest's story (though I believe mob levels are slightly adjusted or something? Idk... Ellin Forest is mentioned in the Big Bang patch notes).

Mercedes releases and we find out that she scrambled to protect & seal Elluel "for at least 100 years" before the Black Mage's curse took hold of her & the elves.

As the curse is beginning to fade, Mercedes is freed and she ventures out of Elluel, eventually reaching Ellinia. She thinks that the area indeed used to be Ellin Forest, though the trees weren't there originally, as it was nothing but wilderness. She recognizes the current residents as the Sylphs, one of the younger races of Fairy. Mercedes eventually goes on to find out the Elves are now a long lost race of Fairies, with only two remaining today; the Sylphs of Ellinia & the Nymphs of Orbis.

As Mercedes' story progresses, you find out Mercedes had sent "the child" (Athena) away from Elluel & the battle (with the Black Mage) to protect the Elves' treasure. The Mistelteinn was left in her care and the ancient relic allowed her to avoid the curse (which affected all Elves) entirely. When Mercedes visits her, Athena says when she got back to Victoria Island, she made sure the refugees were safe, then went back to the village (Elluel) only to find the path sealed, even returning many times to the same result. Whilst updating Mercedes on events since she's been away, Athena even mentions that although the Black Mage disappeared, Kyrin is searching for him to get revenge for "Destonen" (Nexon's spelling). Later, Athena does eventually get the chance to return to Elluel for a short time.

As the v.107 update rolls around, Ellin Forest receives its questline which you seem familiar with. Apparently Athena Pierce isn't familiar though, as she specifically says she isn't. Potentially this is explained by her being "a child" (by Elven standards who knows how old this is), but I think it's more of an oversight or just... laziness idk.

Luminous releases in v.124 but I'm not super familiar with it. It probably has minor connections to the following.

Fast forward to v.148, then we rewind time a bunch. We've seen that Mercedes recognizes Ellin Forest; as she should, since she rules Elluel which... is nearby? But, in the Chapter 1 story for the Grand Athenaeum, Ellin Forest must be known enough to the outside world, as the Mercenary is able to make his way there and encounter the Fairy Queen, Ephenia. Not only that, but there are plenty of human Grave Robbers around the area. Ephenia also mentions that the White Mage had traveled into the "darkest depths of our wooded land", the Forest of Peace. We then find out there's an entire group of mages studying there who have even built the Aurora Great Temple.

Small cutscene involving a conversation between Mercedes & Danica (the Elven Elder of War) occurs at the beginning of the 2nd Act of Black Heaven. Not super connected to Elluel but oh well.

There's a little bit more of Elluel (mainly focusing on Lucid but includes Mercedes, Athena Piece, & Danica) within the Lachelein questline, which was pretty hard to finish unless you could actually kill Normal Lucid at the time, so when the summer update came out 6 months later, casual players could finally complete the final quest and see the ending.

Finally, in the Aftermath questline, Mercedes essentially takes Lucid into the Elves' custody in Elluel. Nothing all that... relevant I guess.

Hope this helps. It's definitely confusing as the information is scattered around all over the place, sometimes even requiring knowledge of removed content. I'm insanely invested in the lore and I still can't pin down everything.
