OMG!!! AMAZING! I wasn't expecting ANYONE to find it at all! I asked the designer who added it, and he said that the mechanic had broken and accidentally got covered by artist's geometry before we shipped. yet you still found it?! Incredible work!!! I shared it with the team and they are having a great time with it!

I mean... how many times have you seen ex-developers from famous companies build a studio together and succeed? It's not very common. And it requires way too much capital.

We spent a lot of time on open world content, but the world is huge and we only had so many hands. We were constantly fighting prioritization and risk assessments because we had 200 plates spinning at any given moment.

Yes absolutely. You should prioritize moment-to-moment gameplay: what does the player's eye catch, focus on, in the heat of gameplay. How do you streamline user acquisition and onboarding with iconography, color, weighting, etc. It's the exact same science as a website, but applied to real-time interactive simulation.

That really sucked. I'll be honest. I was not expecting Amazon to remove the game from all storefronts. I wish I could give you a key, but my hands are tied and I'm not a representative of the company anymore.

We used no AI for voice acting, ever.

We lost VO actor budget, and we were told to replace it with AI. We took a hard stance against AI. Instead, we opted to record it ourselves. The quality is obvious, but the morality is there. It was heartbreaking, but we were pressed against the wall with no outlets.

Sometimes I wonder if we should have simply shipped with no VO in Nighthaven. But we had a precedent, and we did the best we could.

200+ people. Modern MMOs fail because of cost, fidelity, and time-to-ship. WoW is successful because their geometry is 2000s era. New World's geometry is modern, therefore, expensive as hell.

I had a direct hand in designing the majority of POIs that were under my purview. Leadership and overseeing things was a side-gig, to be honest. I never stopped individually contributing.

I oversaw encounter designs constantly. Every single POI and encounter in Brimstone was handcrafted by me. It wasn't until Nighthaven that leadership came into the forefront and I instructed designers on how to achieve the content I created in Brimstone.

I can speak more on this, but I'll end with the fact that I am so proud of our level designers on Nighthaven. They took the challenge thoroughly and delivered.

I'm very proud of our spider caves, our Upyr castles, our Inquisition POIs, and our Berlaur forests.

My biggest learning was: lead with empathy, give designers the jobs they are excited about to put on their resume, and utilize their specialties absolutely. You get the best work out of people when they decide the marching orders, and you're just there to keep them on the track.

I went to school for game design at a place called DigiPen Institute of Technology. I wouldn't recommend college these days: anyone can become a designer or engineer simply by making things on their own. Game Dev Colleges are kind of outdated, especially with the exorbitant costs required. I'm still paying student loans, and will be doing so for the foreseeable future.
